Can someone who understands art put into words what the difference is with older anime compared to today? My eyes recognize the difference in colors, linework, shading, etc. but I have trouble pinpointing the specifics. There's something that looks demonstrably worse about modern animation. It can't just be nostalgia. But I don't know exactly what it is.

The color can be attributed to the difference in ink and cel animation versus digital. Other than the difference in available colors, cels were photographed onto film which added grain and dulled the colors in the finished product. That's why something like red hair in older anime will look muted compared to modern hyper saturated palettes. There's also just the stylistic trend toward saturation in general in effect. There have also been tradeoffs. Modern anime actually is technically better animated but the cost comes at simpler character models. The rest can probably attributed to money. Something like an expensive OVA with top talent was possible back then because the market was stronger. Nowadays the artists are rarely the best in the business and don't put in the same care. Compare the shading on both sets of breasts in your image. The top has a subtle gradation of tones and better contouring while the bottom is more utilitarian with an almost stock "boob shadow" filter applied.

That all sounds plausible. The overall anatomy looks more on point in 80s and 90s anime. Proportions were better. It looks like nowadays it's been streamlined into something that looks like it came out of a How To Draw Anime book. It gets the job done but lacks any of the niceties from yesteryear.

The apparent sterility of modern anime is related to the fact that the images are not being converted to film and going through the many traditional processes needed to actually go from still drawings to moving pictures, each one having some effect on the final product.

With everything being 100% digital today, the end result looks effectively identical to the original artwork and since we're not used to seeing the original artwork absent post-production quirks, it looks off.

Check out these comparison shots. If you look at old animation cels directly they look just as sterile. If you look closely you can even see the texture of the paint and colors looking totally different from the final. These things were usually taken into account and the artists banked on details getting softened. Animating those cels directly on a computer without all the post-production processes would produce a strange effect where everything has weird flat lighting and doesn't look very dynamic or "real", much like these:

Some new shows that are made by people with more ambition and talent will account for this by adapting their techniques. Something like Avatar The Last Airbender looks different than old animation but certainly looks good and "real." There's still legitimate issues to take up regarding anatomy and articulation but shitty artwork existed back in the day, too.

I'm no expert but I think when photographing a frame there are tricks regarding exposure to get a certain effect. The reason why old anime can look warmer is because it's been photographed with real light. Similar effects can be reproduced digitally but few hentai would bother with the effort.

Compare these two nipples. Notice how the older hentai uses vibrant magentas and pinks for the nipples, contrasting with the rest of the breast. It's overall just "brighter." In order for Energy Kyouka to look right it would probably have to be recolored or else it might look too drab after photographing it to film.

Now some of the difference in color is just differences in art direction but you'd likely never see old cel animation using so many shades of beige and brown in close proximity like that. The nipples won't "pop" in the final image. Hell, even the "whites" are different. If you left the colors the same it probably wouldn't look terrible or anything but you'd probably notice that it doesn't look like something made in the 80s or 90s.

I half disagree. It's true that modern anime will do more with the nipple but I also think that there's a trend toward fucked up proportions to specifically make nipples big and detailed. Plus it changes the dynamic of what's actually the turn on. For example, old hentai seemed to focus on the total package of the girl's body. It's not erotic because her nipples are exposed but because her breasts are. That's a nuanced but meaningful difference. Today it's more "look at these nips!"

Same trend happened with vaginas. Which is fine for different productions to go in different directions but it seems like the escalation had a ripple effect through the industry and cost us in certain departments. Ranma is a bit different since it wasn't meant to be pornographic so they restrained themselves more. But at the same time there's an erotic simplicity to showing a woman's body without putting a magnifying glass on any one part of it. Ranma and Akane are "cute." Modern anime likes to go to extremes. "Sexy" means the pic you posted. "Cute" means moe blob. Older anime was somewhere in the middle. And I get what he's saying though. Hentai and anime in general were a heightened reality but not so exaggerated to the point it lost all connection to real life reality and stopped being believable. We accept certain heightened realities like how a high school just happens to be filled with only slim attractive students and how certain fantasy elements like demons can exist in an otherwise ordinary school setting. Even something like the sex itself is heightened and not exactly "real." But in order to buy into the heightened stuff we need it to be balanced by something that seems real enough that the audience can anchor to.

It's like the difference between old Star Wars and Prequel Star Wars. There was a lot of fantasy bullshit in the original trilogy but it didn't overtake everything else so it sort of eased you into the fantasy and gave you the opportunity to buy in to what it was telling you. Prequel Star Wars takes it so far that you stop believing it and it becomes obvious that it's just a bunch of special effects.

Ultimately, all art differences comes down to variance in form. you can seriously spend all day comparing the dimensions of anatomy from one artist to another and how said artist renders their art; rendering is taking into acocunt the material, how light interacts with it, where the light hits it and to what intensity and any texture you want to throw in. there do exist short cuts for many things but each artist learns their own way.

Those talented artists from the 70's and 80's? they're old now man. Uncle Go, who created Getter Robo and Devilman, is an old due and hey guess what people lose their will and decide to do other things. Life tends to work out that way and cynicism/pessimism with various taboo's keeps people away from going deep into the realm of art. Personally i feel this has changed a lot, just look at all the artists on patreon and other places making "some" money with their art. It's not all amazing but damn a good portion of it is. At this point in the game we ought to stay satisfied with still images or quick Viper RSR type of animation. I'm sure there's some art-anon out there who can spend a year to figure out how to animate like the Viper games and make even just do one sex scene with like 5 clips. Optimism is the key

Different artists are going to have different styles no matter what but it can't really be denied that there's a through-line connecting the art of a particular era. Disregarding some notable outliers, certain conventions prevailed in the 80s and then somewhat different conventions prevailed in the 90s. You can probably guess when any anime was made within a range of three or four years and certainly nail the decade.

The thing is, while the debate over 80s versus 90s has mostly been one of personal taste (ex: Cream Lemon vs. La Blue Girl), it does seem like BOTH camps will agree that the prevailing conventions in today's material are fundamentally worse.

I think people are ok with "different." But what I think this thread is proving is that modern hentai (and maybe anime in general) isn't just different but actually inferior in some measurable way. And I think what we've been doing here is trying to put into words the hows and whys.

Because when you're talking about something being "worse" that kind of thing can be vague even if you know it's true. Things just don't "feel" as good or they feel like they're "missing something." It's hard to pin down and it makes you feel like you're crazy or just out of touch. Am I just old and pulling a "back in my day" routine? Is it just nostalgia goggles? But I think it's definitely something more concrete than just a bunch of artists getting old and retiring and new ones showing up in their place. There was a downgrade somewhere along the line. Not sure what caused it.

I remember this hentai I saw during my first days on the internet. Lots of unique frames per animation loop. I'll also grant that Murakami's women often have inhuman proportions changing dramatically shot to shot whereas older works look more consistent. I've no idea how much to attribute there to artistic license or budget constraints. I still love his hard style though. And I loved how he shaded flesh in Taimanin Asagi and Kangoku Senkan, the way their cheeks are flushed and how the women drip with sweat and pussy juice.

He animates liquids great too when the semen starts flying around.

I get the impression that "hentai" has become it's own genre now whereas earlier hentai were really just X plus sex. So like a Sci-Fi anime but with sex. A slice of life anime but with sex. Somehow the scope of hentai narrowed down to it's own side genre where it's a separate thing. Because of that the talent pool got more isolated from anime at large.

Hentai from the 80s and 90s were made with the same aesthetics and story structure as regular non-adult anime were. Cream Lemon, for example, looked just like Ranma 1/2 or Urusei Yatsura. That continued for a good fifteen or twenty years. 90s hentai looked like 90s anime. There was no real conceptual divide.

In fact, it was pretty common for hentai artists and regular anime or video game artists to be the exact same person. A guy like Satoshi Urushihara was doing art for PlayStation RPGs and also Front Innocent.

Maybe that's why it seems a lot better. There was something more genuine about it. It was produced with the same tone and feel as other anime you'd already be a fan of. It built on an existing emotional bond.

It's a similar effect of how nude art of a character by the official artist is more appealing than fan art. A picture of Ranma nude by Rumiko Takahashi or the official animation studio feels more authentic even if fan art can be "better" in certain technical aspects. It makes you feel like you're seeing the "real" character naked as opposed to some random person's interpretation of that character, which enhances the titillation factor. You have this bond with your favorite characters so seeing them in an erotic light triggers emotions on a gut level. So erotic anime that looks and feels like all your favorite anime would have the same effect.

The difference between seeing a nude photograph of a random girl on the internet versus seeing a nude photograph of the girl you've been crushing on for weeks. The former will help you squeeze one out. The latter makes your heart flutter.

That is the perfect analogy. But i would go further and say that the way the girls were drawn helped encourage that. They were actually a bit chubbier and had rounder faces and doe eyes. The innocence dial was up to 11 back then but they still had what were recognizably adult bodies, unlike modern moe. Hentai used to give off a big 'first time' vibe, not just for the characters but the viewers. It could be your twenty third hentai but they never had the cynicism of high volume porn consumption so it always felt special each time.

Anybody else find watching Hentai hard because they can't stop judging its artistic merit? Mai's design is too overdone to register in that way. But even playing devil's advocate and conceding that she looks fine, her influence is a net negative because the trend it started warped anime into what it is today so everything looks like just sexy cartoons instead of "real" girls.
