Japanese Hentai studios don't even try to sell their works properly on a Western market. When I say 'properly' I mean that a DVD with English subtitles (who wants a dub anyway) is released at the same time as the DVD in Japan, circumventing the fansubbing process. If there is a significant delay between the releases - and as far as I know most Hentai is never released on the Western market, probably partly because they fear legal issues with 'child' porn, just ask Australia -, people will watch it illegally. And given that most Hentai isn't available on the Western market, piracy done by Westerners doesn't create economic damage: There are no sales missed.

So virtually the only economic damage caused to Hentai is committed by Japanese people, who give no fuck about English-language sermons on 4chan. Everyone who wants to virtue-signal about copyright issues with Hentai movies on this site is a clueless wise-guy.

The real competition to Hentai - which decreases the production values - are Western porn sites. Because they offer Japanese men (the consumer base) something they never got in the past: Uncensored porn, and it's free.

Against that, there is virtually no way for anyone here to save Hentai studios. What we witness is that something used by a mass market of young single males is becoming a niché catering to very special interests. Therefore you get stuff like trap Hentai while, in general, production values are decreased.
