It's because it was before the era of fully digital workflows, and therefore done on cels. There was a lot more preplanning and attention to detail. This was also in the era directly following a massive spike in animation interest and industry in Japan, so there was still a lot of cash flow, and a lot of old talent around.

These days it's all digital. The barrier of entry is comparatively low, you aren't penalized heavily for wasting cels due to poor planning, don't necessarily need key-framers or any such division of labor. All the people of that era are either dead, dying, or have drifted out of the industry.

Then there's all this other marketing related shit, were they've fully traced out and boiled down character archetypes they know will be successful, and very little risk is taken. I also think digital is almost always ugly. Texhnolyze is the good full digital anime that comes to mind.

It's dead, unfortunately. Just like you don't turn on the TV and see 50's era black and white shows, it's over. That era is gone.

There is something I really miss about older animated hentai material compared to newer ones.

I think it's mostly the character design. Modern hentai have to please the younger audience which has a crush on stuff like huge tits, super "anime" looking girls with big eyes and panty shots. There are few exceptions like the studio that worked on Bible Black, but it's still nowhere comparable as the majority. I think loving the female body for its simple forms is much better than exaggerating them to the point of looking unrealistic and undetailed.

Also, modern hentai seem to be so obsessed in having some kind of rape twist in them. NTR stuff's interest is at its pick nowadays, and while there have definitely been older hentais with that kind of stuff too it was the minority and not the majority. Older hentai seem to focus more on some specific japanese tropes and parodying them.

I think it's more the ink and paint than the actual drawings that causes the difference in appearance. It's true that there was a general art shift going from the 80s to the 90s (mostly things getting less round and greater use of sharp angles becoming the norm) but modern anime is 100% digitally painted and doesn't get transferred to actual film. The lack of film grain and an overuse of saturated colors (which aren't naturally muted since the frames are no longer transferred from cel to film) creates an image that's clean to the point of sterility.

But beyond that, I think that the industry as a whole has degenerated into one of those "How To Draw Anime" books. The entire affair has been reduced to its most basic elements. It's like baking a cake that's nothing but flour, milk, and eggs. Sure, it satisfies the definition of a cake and it tastes like one but it does the absolute bare minimum required.

I don't know. Different studios can get a different "look" even under similar constraints. Avatar and Legend of Korra, hell even Disney, use primarily 2-tone shading and they look excellent. But they also use a muted palette with less saturation.

I just happen to think most anime is waaaaay too damn bright these days or that the paint job is too "standard" or something. Everything looks like it was done by a machine. I don't know how to put it into words but the colors don't have the same depth as they used to.

There was absolutely a shift in color palette at some point around the year 2000 or so. I don't even think it can be specifically attributed to digital paint since animators went digital a long time ago. I think they just stopped caring about color theory and now just have "flesh tone," "red," "blue," etc. You can even see it in your comparison shot. A-Ko's skin is various shades of pink. There's no actual white in her composition at all, while Rias there has plenty.

Vintage hentai actually had much better articulation and animation.

Modern hentai gets away with being watchable because technology makes for layers of lighting and motion that are more exaggerated but also more cartooney.

The line work and application of shading were better back then, too. Look at how shadow is used to give contour to A-Ko's breasts. The subtlety is totally absent in the bottom picture. Rias's shading is purely utilitarian and her boobs are generically "round." There aren't more colors involved--both girls have three-toned color. It's just that A-Ko is done with more care. Rias looks flat in comparison.

Also agree with this. The 80s and 90s seemed like there was more of an attempt to mimic live action film, just using animation as the medium. It wasn't about pandering to a niche. The superior writing came with better characterization. And better characterization comes with a stronger connection to the audience. When the viewer actually LIKES the characters the sex scenes are a lot more rewarding. It's the difference between getting a hooker and dating someone. Modern hentai is straight business--here's a girl you don't know or care about getting fucked. With older titles the characters feel more "real" so seeing them naked or having sex draws up more emotions which enhances your arousal. Here's an example of two-toned coloring that still looks better than modern three-toned color. Just look at the actual application of the shading and you can see why it still looks better despite being technically inferior. For all the fancy lighting effects and shine they do in modern animation, there's little artistry involved in any of it. But back then they actually put thought into their line work (look at the thin pencil-like details on the character's bodies) and shaded intelligently. I wonder if there's a breakdown for how much time was spent on a single frame of animation back then versus today. If the time investment per frame dropped significantly that would explain a lot but I feel like that can't be the case since the actual animation quality also dropped. What's the average anime today? Like 12 fps?

It's the same colors as always, but the old processes made the color water down. If you look at cels, the colors are as bright as bottom picture. Magazine scans of old anime magazines have cel anime illustrations that are way brighter than the tv product.

When they switched to digital methods they just kept the same standard palettes while other studios around the world switched for paler tones. It may be the correct, desired tones but the brightness certainly doesn't benefit all anime, and it's less gentle to the eyes.

I think it has as much to do with more detailed shading as it does with all the darker, more muted colors. I can't think of many older series that used colors that are as heavily saturated as they are today

They used to photograph the cels onto actual film, that process as well as the film's natural grain itself changed the colors to give it a certain look that isn't quite reproduced the same way with modern 100% digital animation. One giveaway is if you look at the characters vs. the backgrounds. The color difference and conspicuousness of the things that are animated as opposed to the static painted backgrounds is MUCH more noticeable in older animation. As for hentai not making money anymore, I think it really comes down to how money is made in animation in general. Pretty much no cartoon makes any money these days. The value is how much merchandise it can sell. Hentai just happens to be hit particularly hard because you really can't sell merch for it.

Old animation was analog cells and hand drawn and laid and recorded and everything. Modern animation is digitally recorded via cells drawn into a computer with tablets and then manipulated with animation software and video editors. It looks far cleaner but as a result of reduced budgets it causes anime to have that "south park" look where it's cheaply animated with no analog recording animations. On the plus side modern animations are far better to compress into h264 formats compressing up 1/2 the size of older animations because of the lack of noise.

I don't think they were better animated in technical terms. They all probably ran at 12fps or some shitty number. But the hand-drawn nature meant that there was more attention to detail so the motion felt less...mechanical. Things like hair flopped around and shadows warped in ways that gave the characters life. Today everything looks standardized.

Hentai in North America was a victim of the global recession and economic down turn that occurred in late 2007 - 2008. You had several major players in the NA market with plenty of cash to license product. However, at the same time you saw an increase in concerns from Japanese companies about reverse importation and digital copyright violations due to most everything ending up on torrents within hours of releases. The torrent piece is what really hurt companies like Japananime, who was releasing some really good quality titles such as Enbo aka Taboo Charming Mother, Mahou Shoujo Ai aka Sexy Magical Girl and Ringetsu. The reverse importation issues is why the last episode of Mahou Shoujo Ai was never released by Japananime - Milky would never give them the master to be able to do the release. Enbo was finally only released after being stalled about 18 months and the master was a reduced frame rate from the original from what I remember reading at the time it came out. After the 2008 recession started, most of the US companies lost their backing as money got tight in many markets. The same thing occurred for a few years with mainstream anime licensing which lead the ADV folding and several other issues. While mainstream anime has pretty much recovered, Hentai in the NA market is pretty much dead in the water for the most part. Only Kitty Media / Media Blasters have released anything new in the last few years.

The money is still there, it just comes from a different source now. Piracy means that instead of most of the revenue coming from merchandise, now ALL of it does. Pretty much no cartoon makes any money these days, it's all in the merchandise. Shows get cancelled all the time when they prove unable to sell toys. Hentai just happens to fall into a trap where it's pretty much impossible to merchandise it. Nobody is going to buy Front Innocent action figures. Even live action porn struggles to sustain itself today. Playboy is going to go belly up soon.

I think the future for these kinds of things will be to take a page out of Game of Thrones. Hentai might be able to work if it parades itself as an R rated movie rather than "just porn."
