Hey, I'm considering writing a Fap Gauntlet successor in Python using the Qt GUI toolkit (PySide bindings to be specific).

I checked out some features, and it seems like I could easily support displaying regular images, animated images, as well as videos (webm, gifv) with the Phonon framework.

Starting this from scratch would allow me to write clean, easily-to-contribute-to code and make it open source. Additionally, I should be able to distribute cross-platform binaries (although I'm only positive I can easily do so for Windows).

I'd be using the Qt Designer to do the heavy-lifting for the GUI and use BASC-py4chan as the 4chan API bindings for Python (although I wrote my own here: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/b676994239e7586fba87 a while ago, using something that has been around longer is probably a good idea).

I've written a few smaller applications in Qt, but nothing fancy so far -- Python in general on the other hand I'm quite well-versed in.

Is there any interest in me doing this? If so, are there any features you would like to see? Are the current workings of the Fap Gauntlet "beat bar" ideal? Flashing/blinking text in the rhythm dictated by the users? Would an actual beat bar be more appropriate? If you feel like doing some mock-ups to present possible ideas visually, I'm up for that too. I'll try my best to come up with something usable over the next few days.

Hell yeah! I'd love to have a way to make it display images in order and have a "win" screen when you reach the end of the image set, whether it be a chosen file directory or using a thread's images.

Would be really cool if it supported more file types like you were saying. And an actual beat bar à la fap hero videos would be fantastic, I think, but maybe optional.

Furthermore, maybe a way to "create" a personal fap gauntlet where people can set their images and then the instructions/timing for each image individually and save that as a file so it can be repeated the exactly as it was created in the future. That way, if possible, anons could share some kind of fap gauntlet file that includes all their images and instructions. I don't know if what I'm saying makes sense to you or is even viable, but I think it could potentially be pretty neat.

This is basically already done, I simply create a fap_gauntlet.json within the created cache folder containing the successfully parsed instructions linked to the filename of the original post.

Creating those customized Fap Gauntlet scenarios you mentioned is also possible with that format too: By simply adjusting the stroke, speed or force text list within the JSON file for the corresponding filename. Of course this could be done more comfortably in the future, maybe with a separate window or even tool.

Talking about base functionality and because it was requested that I keep you guys up to date: The very basic foundations of the application are there: Downloading a thread, parsing all instructions within it, saving that metadata to a file within the created cache folder and displaying / navigating through simple, non-animated images is currently already possible. What is clearly missing is image resizing with a better algorithm (and later on calculating a Lanczos resized version using Pillow and replacing it as soon as it is available), proper scaling, displaying animated GIFs / WEBMs, Beatbar/Flashing overlay, automatic image switching, caching of loaded images/videos etc.

Some technical details:

I spent the most time implementing a good GenericWorker class for doing stuff in a separate background thread, without blocking the GUI thread and facilitating good communications between QThread instances and the main thread. I do this by passing a regular Python function or a generator into the GenericWorker class, along with some arguments, connecting signals to a few pre-defined slots within the worker and then starting the worker either by moving it to a QThread instance or putting it into a QThreadPool implementation (since GenericWorker is also a QRunnable).

Using a generator instead of a regular function is pretty neat: that way one can easily write functions that emit "progressed" signals through the worker and periodically update all observers (e.g. the GUI) with the current progress. Various more neat features are possible with it, but I don't want to get too technical -- I just thought it might be interesting for people who have previosly worked with Qt.

Currently I'm subclassing QAbstractItemModel to abstract a Fap Gauntlet folder for the controllers, I'll have to see if this will really pay off in the future.

A small video update of the new features: check /SpitefulSorrowfulGalah on gfycat. The first video shown is actually a webm I put manually into the folder, the animated image shown later is a gif -- both work. I also managed to find and fix a memory and CPU leak.

As of now still missing (major features), is the automatic switching of the image after the calculated period and the beatbar/text display. I'm considering not doing an overlay (although I'm pretty sure it's possible), and instead simply having a black bar (like there currently is) with flashing/blinking text or the beatbar. That way no part of the image would be blocked.

Using the scrollwheel, a nicer thread browser etc. isn't there yet -- but nothing crucial as of now.

This took more time than I expected so far. Do you guys have any idea for a new name, that's _not_ Fap Gauntlet? I don't feel right stealing an old name. I'll also probably put this up on GitHub tomorrow.

Just did some experiments. Overlaying Labels on top of the Phonon Video player is out (the video simply turns black). I'll try and test if I can get some alternatives working (the only thing I remember reading about is using a QGraphicsView somehow). If those both don't work, I might be forced to simply put the label below/above the displayed content instead of over it.

Small update: Text is currently displayed at the top, centered. When the text size exceeds the window size, line breaks are automatically added -- fixing one of the issues that the original had. Text can be overlaid over images, animated images, and videos without issue on my system.

Automatically switching the image after the specified period of time, and the pulsating instruction text is next on the list. I'll look into adding some kind of outline to the text or something else to distinguish it better from the background. Adding the outline unfortunately seems a bit problematic with Qt -- I might have to check out the QPainter interface more closely.

I just updated my new version of Fap Gauntlet in the repository. I'll see about providing binaries tomorrow.

It should now be able to do what the old one did -- well the main features. Blinking text in the correct rhythm, downloading threads, loading threads from disk etc. Additionally it can also display webm videos. I'll clean up the code a bit tomorrow and then probably use PyInstaller to make a first very alpha release.

Sorry about the GIF quality, GifCam sucks apparently. The displayed text looks smooth and green in reality.

The very first of the alpha pre-release can be found here: https://github.com/irlittz/Fap-Gauntlet/releases. Unpack and execute "Fap Gauntlet.exe", let me know if it works. If you don't trust me, you can simply follow the development instructions and run the scripts yourself (open source).

For now the program simply keeps skipping until it finds a downloaded image with a valid instruction -- it is recommended that yo do _not_ open threads without a single valid instruction for now (this is just a temporary work-around until instructions can be generated randomly).

Arrow keys don't work currently (also temporarily), use A, Space and D to navigate back and forth and Esc to quickly exit.
