Because you can't have concentrated metropolitan areas making ideological laws for the entire country. Sure, the gov doesn't micromanage but they do create and pass large scale legislation.

The best example I can think for this is the differing views on gun ownership and how they differ throughout the country. Of course cities like New York and LA are primarily against gun ownership, because their primary argument with guns deals with self defense and general gun violence issues. They have virtually zero concept of using guns for sustainability. Compare that to states like Idaho, Montana, Iowa and the tons of other states that use hunting for food and whatnot.

The electoral college was created exactly for that reason. Can't have a few small (geographically) areas making decisions for the whole country and vice versa. It was called "The Great Compromise" for a reason
