What's holding them from taking the a step further?
It's compatible with pretty much any relevant browser.

I have not seen any official update to the reasons behind it since moot basically saying that he wants to keep this site an "imageboard" and that's why audio is disabled almost everywhere

4chan has always been slow to change and in keeping up with modern stuff, probably due to much more traffic than other similar imageboards

moot is no more, the actual admin is doing /vip/ boards and such which go against what moot wanted (make a difference between regular anons and 4chanpass anons), so if changes like this are being made it's time to make change to better 4chan too.


To admins: like I don't really care about audio being enabled everywhere but at least allow better codecs (VP9+Opus) to be used, this will lower the bandwidth usage by half and/or better the quality for users by half.

Internet Explorer does not and probably never will be, but it's a deprecated browser and it doesn't even support webm in the first place.
Microsoft Edge (Windows 10 default browser) does support VP9 since August of this year!

Safari shouldn't matter either as they don't even support VP8 or any other webm as well. There is no native webm playback on iOS whatsoever since Quicktime doesn't play them.

People with IE and Safari already need plugins for VP8, so changing to VP9 wouldn't affect them. I can't test it, but MS press releases suggest that Edge *only* supports VP9, so upgrading would actually allow more people to view webms.
