Sure, the police aren't the best solution but they're what we have now. I don't have anything personal against police. I've been arrested once, which occurred when a police officer found .2 grams of marijuana in my glove box after pulling me over because the running light on my car was flickering a bit. He promptly arrested me, I spent two nights in jail under a $1500 bond, and ultimately ended up spending well over $2000 on substance abuse classes, lawyer fees, court costs, and jail costs (jail is not free, you must pay for the time you spend there). I also had to pay to retrieve my car from the towing company that came and got it, as the police officer was not feeling generous and chose not to park it in the nearby public lot.

I won't say that all police are pigs and deserve death. On some level they are just doing their jobs. However, it is prudent to keep in mind that these officers choose to enforce a legal and penal code which in some respects is rather draconian and frequently does not align with the will of the citizens that it governs. On a slightly more pragmatic level, I wonder how many police have actually read the entire US Code which they have agreed to enforce, with deadly force if necessary. I can see both sides of the fence, but personally, I don't think that police officers deserve to be lauded as heroes.

In any case, at least in the United States, a citizen invested in their personal well-being would be best off avoiding both criminals and police. Even in friendly encounters, police have every ability to fuck up your life and person. Whether or not they get away with it is a different story, but one that's not strictly relevant.

So Troika had a bunch of requirements to put the country on track again some of them included:
-cuts on the unemployment allowance. We had a bunch of people that made the living out of it.

-firing a bunch of people from the public sector. We had a more than 563k people working for the state in such a small country (10 million) many not doing anything and getting early retirements, bonuses and shit.

-Raising the VAT/GST. This was the best way to stop people from spending too much but it halted trades since people stopped buying shit and asking for loans (to cover previous loans) to the banks. So once money stopped flowing, Economy went to shit.

I'm not saying they were bad measures. But they where implemented poorly by Passos's government and that fucked things up.

Well people got mad because l they couldn't live the good life anymore so they wanted another government. A good one this time. (the previous one because although having contracted a sea of debt it gave them rewards and accolades).

So they decided that troika being in Portugal for less than a year was enough and wanted them gone so we could go live "la vida louca" and spend more of the good EU's money.
