1. keep distance - most takedowns only work when the other guy is in shoulder-touches-shoulder range. Use punches to keep the distance at kick & box.

2. keep you opponent's hips away - most of the time they'll need those to lift you. sometimes even if he gets a hold of you with both hands, you can still push your palms against his hip bone. helps a lot.

3. learn the sprawl (YouTube) - if he's not throwing or lifting you, he's gonna go for a leg-grab takedown (very common). learn to side-step instead of back-step, preferably. it helps against getting run over.

4. learn to break the fall, and especially learn forward and backward rolling. the rolling will help you get 3D orientation. sometimes you've just been had, you're in the air, and there's nothing left to do than wait for the ground to hit you. instinctively knowing which way is up (while you're falling) is difficult, but can save your life.
