Yeah a good lube is important, I've found that some lubes are great as long as there is motion but they don't work very well for mostly stationary objects like buttplugs. Thick/viscous lubes usually work well I've found.

And yeah, depending on the size of your plug and the shape you might need to warm up first. If it's really "blunt" you definitely need to, if it's pointy then perhaps pause when it's half way in and let your butt get used to that level of stretching before continuing with the rest of the plug!
