I climb up and around another turn in the stairwell. Must be about five floors up now. But I won't look down.
It's been about 3 years now, and I still hate looking down.
I get to my friend's new place, he's showing me around. He's one of the only ones that isn't extra careful with my feelings these days. It's a relief. I get tired of people walking on eggshells around me.
He takes me out to the balcony. We smoke a cigarette. I grip on to the railing and glance one time at the ground so far below…

I burst out of sleep. The dreams won't stop. Every night I wake up shivering, my blanket drenched in sweat. I drink my thoughts away in the evenings, but the alcohol dehydrates me and I can never really sleep right. I won't take the pills they prescribed me though. I won't chemically erase her, she deserves better. I won't deny her hauntings. They're all I have. I'll drink my guilty days away like a man, and let her reign in my dreams.

I mean, hell. Here's a story from my grandpa once.

Australian soldier, WW2,
Served in and around the Siege of Tobruk.
Came back after loosing a few of his mates (he lied about his age) and then went off to the Pacific theater. In short, him and some of his closest Aussie mates went up and took over a few island here and there from the Japs. With each being labelled exclusively 'American and Allied victory'. Not fucking once were they ever mentioned on any shrine dedicated to these 'American' victories. Overshadowed by 'Allied' glory after loosing his best mates from back home.

He never talked about it as much during his final years. Died in '03. Nobody ever fucking cared about our victories, nor the soldiers who performed them.
