Here's a few tips from a talentless hack:

SFM bones are only an approximation to a human skeleton. All spinal motion needn't be pure rotation. Sometimes a small amount of translation helps. But don't go too far (see webm). The same goes for clavicles.

rig_hips used sparingly can add to animation detail.

To make an animation less robotic, introduce delays/advances according to whether a body part is reacting to a force or applying a force. A less obvious thing to note is that you can delay/advance individual co-ordinates. For example, in this animation, you could make the feet wave around by delaying the rotation of the feet relative to the position. For more complex motions, you can delay/advance all six co-ordinates to make for smoother motion.

In the previous webm, it looks like a lock might have been (over)used on the chest. In this webm, a partial lock on the chest might have helped. Remember that locks can be partially applied with the playhead preset, and world locks can be separate pos or rot.

For more complex locking, use constraints. Constraints come with a slider so that how fully they are applied can be animated. The constraints produced by an IK rig also come with sliders that allow mixed IK/FK animation.

I've used material override animation a couple of times, but I'm messing around with materials in general at present. I'm doing an animation where I have two models of a jacket where I alpha out the left of one and the right of the other. This allows me to open up the jacket and animate each half separately using the bones on the jacket model itself. To make things worse, there is no jacket model so I'm alphatesting out the body of the model as well.

SFM is shit but it's fun to play with.

Its just that SFM animators are simply motivated by each other. So they try and match each other's quality. Its simply friendly competition, motivation and inspiration. Thats the reason the quality of SFM stuff has gone up over the years. Even people new to the scene make decent stuff a few months into it.

Cakeofcakes for example had no experience at all prior to sfm. Yet look at them now. Hes just barely over a year old now.

The real trick is to just animate as much as you can. It's like drawing, the more you do it the better you'll get. And if you want to mimic real motion you should watch it happening.

Also before animating something just from your head, you should try acting it out first, it will give you a much better idea of the limits of motion for the motion.

The thing about SFM porn is that animation is only a part of it.
