Hi, I'm working on a wallpaper and I kinda ran into the limits of my skills.

Is there any way to remove the background from pic related and still keep the engine glow?
I obviously can't just do a select by color, since that doesn't work on gradients.

Bump. Novice graphic artist here would also like to know.

there's different ways
here's one >>>/wsr/276185
what i did on that was just removing the black background with magic wand tool, then polygonal lazo to remove the glow light, then i simply placed an 'optical flare' -pic related on top of the engine.

goto the channels palette
highlight the blue channel
Select All + Copy
highlight rgb channel
paste new layer (this should be a copy of the blue channel, but as its own layer in grayscale)
using layer/adjustments/curves, blow out the ship until its all white.
Select All + Copy
turn off that layer
on the original ship layer, add a mask
option/alt click on the mask in the layer palette
Paste the modified grayscale image into the mask
opition/alt click the layer in the layer pallet to get out of mask mode.

done
