This is sort of true. Stay away from sites like upwork, and 99designs. These sites will demotivate you when youre competing with 1000 dindus spitting out shit made with stock assets. Cold call local businesses that need design work or just make up briefs. Once you have a nice portfolio site its easy to get a full-time junior position.

I don't code at all - I could probably barely close a div. I can track stuff down with inspect, but I honestly haven't written a real line of code in 6 years (yup - that's junior year of college).

I'm at a small place - like 15 people and I'm 1/3 of design team, so by being at such a small place I function as a gatekeeper for all of our visual deliverables.

If you don't want to code, don't do it at all - you're better off to whole-ass the design part and have respect for code's limitations. Instead, learn to make advanced prototypes so you can bring your idea to life so you can focus on details and UX as opposed to coding skill.
