hey /gd.

I'm finishing up a portfolio now since practical semester starts in march. I'm studying communication design, but I also have a strong interest for more illustrative stuff as you will see.
I'm hoping to get feedback on the layout, the projects and the overall impression. I've heard, employers look at those portfolios for no more than 3 minutes, so I tried letting most pictures speak for themselves.

drive.google (.) com/open?id=0B-yPJclZH8yzc3dsa1Uzd2V1T3M

My biggest problem with it is, that I feel like my stuff is in between Illustration and Graphic Design and I dont seem to fit into the agencies I looked up so far. Would be appreciated, if you could give me tips on that, too (e.g. what do you think I should focus on?).

The text is in German, as I'm not planning to apply anywhere outside Germany, but I'll also make an English website soon.

Thanks for any help

Pretty good imo, I do think the body font is shitty and I don't like the full justify.

okay, but it's futura, whats wrong about that? but i get your argument about text alignment, i dont like it normally, but I thought, it would make a better look over all for a page and I tried getting it to work

I like your work, and you appear to have a lot more to offer than I did when I got my first design job at a newsprint advertiser. You seem to be trying to get a job /anywhere/, but I would like to ask, WHERE do you want to be? Are you going for print or digital publication? A good thing to remember is to cater to the specific niche of the place you are applying for. For example, before I applied for my previously mentioned print job, I made some specifically print oriented examples so my portfolio could show that I was capable in print because that is what the place I was applying to did. So when you present your portfolio to an establishment, make SURE you have work in there which relates to the work that that already do there. Of course include other things that will intrigue and inspire them to desire you, but ALWAYS include work which is obviously what they already are doing. A nice mix of both of those things can give you a huge advantage in being hired. It may sound like a lot of work to make new things for every single place you apply, but I can't deny that it absolutely helped me to be hired because I mimicked a few things they were already doing and I researched their company before I applied to them specifically. Do not apply to a place without knowing what they do thoroughly. If you know all about them, this will absolutely maximize your appeal during the interview. Good luck, bro.

didn't think someone else would anser, so I'm answering very late. I think you're very right in what you say, my problem is, that I dont have that much time for applying anymore.

Practical Semester starts in March, and I really need to find something now. I've made an english version of my portfolio now too (can upload, if somebody wants to read through it).

I've applied to studios and agencies last week and I tried to pick ones, that have a similar style than me but also make cool enough stuff, that I can see myself enjoying working there. That's why I filtered out the things like webdesign or strict print studios naturally.

It would be very good to have work, that is tailored for the needs of the specific studios, but I really don't have time right now to do this.

I thought I could combat this by applying to as many studios that still kinda fit with what I'm doing and also throwing in some places, that just make cool stuff, that I'm completely unqualified for.

I applied to 27(!) last week and one answered, they dont take interns at the moment. I really dont know what to do, it could be that I'm choosing places that seem to be well known and popular and not your typical neighbourhood design studio.. I think I'll have to apply to some of those in the following days.

Also: Is it bad to ask the people I've not gotten an answer from for a week?

I hate Bauhaus from the bottom of my heart, but i wouldn't call Futura shitty.
It fits well.

Why did you decide to colour you name and index grey while the rest of Headlines etc. is black though?
It's not that i think it looks bad, it just struck me as a bit odd.

(Love that A Capella Rocks logo btw)

Thanks!

I wanted the title page to stick out, and make the colours next to it a little less in-your-face. You have a point, I might think about it before resending this week.

That's the studios I suggest to apply for. They are more likely interested in interns. The payment might be less but the chance is higher that you learn more and that you have much more fun. Be flexible and also apply in other places such as Munich, Hamburg, etc.

For the coming semester I suggest dribbble as a platform to spread your talent. If you have lots of followers (a bit tricky, though) and good work, the companies are going to ask you to work for them. Also make a website to show your stuff.. better than a pdf or google drive link. HTML/CSS is very easy to learn.

>Also: Is it bad to ask the people I've not gotten an answer from for a week?
I think after two weeks you should send a mail to ask. That will make them think that you are very interested in the studio.

Yes. It makes you sound desperate.
