Hey, I'd appreciate some constructive feedback on general UI, layout and usability of this news portal.

https://the-kinematograph.rhcloud.com/

Thanks.

Layout is not good.
1) Too much of one story, I would also like to see less of it and LOTS of little ones around it.
2) Not enough images. I want to see something before I invest my energy in reading.
3) Too much free space around the sides that could be filled with more headlines and pictures.
>>
>>294376
Are you talking about a home page or an article page?

1) I wanted to focus on a story while you read an article.

2) Don't understand this one. They are quite big, I don't have much content yet.

3) Again, because of the focus and control of user actions. Look at Medium, NY Times etc.

Btw, did you open a sidebar? That's where all the other recommended content is located at, but last time people told me to make it hidden on default.
>>
>>294379
Cool just my opinion mate. I would not use your site. I prefer the style of The Guardian, BBC News, Yahoo! News, etc.

Both Medium and NY Times look like trash to me.

Np, thanks for a feedback, man.

I'm having a huge problem now, though, because I've spent a lot of time on this and went through many iterations but everyone is having a different opinion. Somebody would say I'm trying to cram as much as content as possible just for clicks if I did what you said.

I can easily bring some things back and have more content, but I don't know what to do.

What do you think about having a sidebar open on default but keep the hamburger which can hide it?

>pic related with more content everywhere
>>
Oh and just to mention - on mobile there is no navigation and I have to fix some bugs and reponsiveness of a few elements. Ignore those details, sorry!
>>
that sidebar animation looks very choppy
>>
>>294426
I know, it's on my list. I'm animating all elements at the same speed, don't know what causes this behavior atm.
>>
Little update - I made a sidebar open on default again. I see people don't use it much otherwise.

Also, I'm aware of all the bugs, I'll fix them when I have time.

Would appreciate more feedback on readibility of articles and a layout of the main page and category pages. I'm trying to hit a perfect spot between having a clean look, but with enough information shown at all times.

With sidebar, the number of articles is pretty much the same as in The Guardian and the rest of the sites the anon above mentioned.
>>
Too many problems to list, man. Where does anybody even begin? The whole thing looks awkward and unpolished.
>>
>>294507
Please, list me at least a couple of examples then. Didn't hear anything really negative from anyone yet.
>>
>>294508
Btw, hope you tried it on a PC, because I'm still working on a mobile version. That IS unpolished.
>>
I don't want to write essays here, but I just want to say that I've been running in circles with this website for at least half a year now and I already did an extensive research and comparisons.

I've been watching behavior of visitors through analytics these days, and I know for a fact that <10% of people even scrolled through the main page, even less tried to see how the other pages look or how anything works, so I'm questioning the replies I get here.

Now, objectively, I think this project can't be bad, because I followed every pattern and redesigned constantly based on opinion of the others. At worst, it can just be generic. But this is my first full web design project and I know it can still be much better. I learned a lot through this - but comments like these >>294507 don't help at all.

If you are willing to really help, god bless and thank you, otherwise, thanks, but you don't have to waste your time in this thread.

Hope you understand how mentally painful this shit is, and I want to finish it properly and be done with it.
TL;DR: if you are willing to help, really take a few minutes of your time to test it properly and write a feedback, so I can finally end this agony I'm going through right now.

the word kinematograph is aligned differently to the words beneath it
the colour scheme is flat and boring
sidebar shouldn't have links to individual articles, sections instead. it should definitely not have pictures.
your logo mark should be more pronounced, right now it's the same size as icons.
the page looks completely empty, jlaw being cut out emphasizes this even more.

and more i can't be asked to type out. did you do any research to how film portal websites should look? looks thoughtless and lazy.
>>
>>294511
Ok, cool.

>and more i can't be asked to type out. did you do any research to how film portal websites should look? looks thoughtless and lazy.

Explained everything in the previous post. I did.

Btw, here you can see a few shots of a previous version:

>the word kinematograph is aligned differently to the words beneath it
Ok, that's an easy fix, it is just centered, like the navigation at the bottom, so it can't be aligned. I've been thinking of putting everything on the same line though.

>the colour scheme is flat and boring

Check out the screens in the link above. I went with desaturated blue hues, with light brown and red accents. My opinion is that it looks good and minimal. Other websites don't have much more either.

>sidebar shouldn't have links to individual articles, sections instead. it should definitely not have pictures.

Why? It basically functions the same like a sidebar here e.g. http://screenrant.com/
Ofc it should have images, everyone has them. Those are not sections, but listings of "Popular" "Most liked" etc. articles.

>your logo mark should be more pronounced, right now it's the same size as icons.

I realize, thanks, I'll do something about it.

>the page looks completely empty

Don't understand this, really. I think it's clean and controls the movement of the eyes. E.g.

http://www.jutarnji.hr/
http://pitchfork.com/

But I can half agree on it, though. I should probably spice the layout a bit more.

Otherwise, I don't have much content really. Only news and reviews, so the layout is partly affected by that.

>jlaw being cut out emphasizes this even more

I've been thinking about this for a long time and had multiple versions of a header hero image. I wanted to have one featured article on top, rather than multiple ones.

Thanks for your opinions, even though I can't agree with some things.
>>
>>294511
Feel free to post examples of film portal websites then, because I've seen a lot of them and I think they don't look much different at all.
>>
>>294512
do you think it's strange that you ask for feedback but then just justify your own choices with almost every point somebody makes? ask yourself man, do you actually want honest feedback or do you want people to say you made the right choices? i could argue with some of your points but it's clear to me you don't want criticism lol.
>>
>>294515
Can't I explain my thought back? I appreciate the criticism, but I don't know from whom it is coming from. I just want to start a small discussion, that's all, man.

Again, I'm really interested in a good examples of film portals you might share with me. Always looking for inspiration.
>>
>>294376

literally a child. prefers Yahoo news layout to Medium. Can safely be ignored.

>>294430

Has a point. is there a need for animations anyway? or do you actually think you're impressing people with your animation 'skills'?

>>294507

has no advice but needs to be a dick anyway. can safely be ignored.

>>294511

harsh but not as retarded as our two friends before.

>>294515

also has a point. maybe YOU are the dick...

for my contribution, i think you obviously just used a template and maybe changed some colours and are acting like a 'real designer' whatever you think that is. nothing wrong with templates imo, saves lots of wasted time, broken frameworks and attention-whoring threads like this, why don't you focus on decent content and stop with all this redesigning the web wheel so i can make money making pointless pretty things bullshit because it's easier than good content, it's a waste of everybody's time, news/fill portals have been done and done and done again by smarter, more important and established people than you. use a template one of them is giving away and use your design skills to make SFM porn, or write some 'redpill /pol/ shit or something normal if you are capable so people at least have a reason to go to your website other than spamming your 'look at the pretty thing i made' sheeit that literally nobody cares about or is anywhere near as impressed by as you 'front end' kiddies seem to think we all are.
>>
>>295050
I haven't used template at all. I designed and coded it completely from scratch, man.

I'm not sure why are you so harsh to everyone in this thread.

I'm used to constant negative replies on this board, so no worries about that, I just wanted to get some good discussion going since this is a discussion board AFAIK, but the thread can as well just die now.

There is not much point talking with you now, since you obviously didn't read anything in the OP. I'll just reply to your point about animation - no, I'm the last one who will overuse animations (you can see there are non of them on the site), but the animation on the sidebar IS needed. You can't just let it pop in from nowhere, that will confuse people - bad UX.
>>
>>295088
I'll just correct myself before I go - the OP actually doesn't state at all that this is for my final year project about user interface design - I thought I mentioned that, but it was on another place. Haven't explained it here since people would just say "TL;DR". I don't know how much people here are informed about this subject, I came with hopes that there are people more knowledgeable than me from whom I can learn something.
>>
>>294366
mobile version looks great, loads fast. gj
>>
OP, if you are there, let me know. I've just read this thead.
Some guys here are full of shit (IMHO), and (most likely) have no ideia what are talking about.

I really want help you out, if you read this, please, reply :)
>>
>>296078
Hey, I'm still here. Haven't worked on it for a while, just wrote a thesis. Got a bit sick of everything, desu. Appreciate the help.
>>
>>296080
I see... but did you gave up?
Bc if you didn't, I'd be please to help you out :)
>>
>>296107
No, I have it for a final college project, can't give up. I'm finishing it soon, though.
>>
>>296112
Hum.. I see. Post more pics and ideias (if you still want some feedback).
>>
>>296115
The link is in the OP and that's the most recent version.
