Hello /gd/, I've posted my website design some time ago

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Hello /gd/, I've posted my website design some time ago and asked for some feedback. It's online now but I still have a lot of small problems that need to be fixed (also, some pages will maybe be a bit slow to load at the moment).

>Here's the link:

All I'm asking is some feedback on user interface design and usability, I need it for my uni project and would be thankful for anything you might have to say. The thing I'm still worried about the most is a sidebar. Should I add a show/hide functionality for it, how does it affect the hierarchy etc.

I really don't have many people to test it for me and give me some useful feedback so I would appreciate any help. I don't have an official survey to link you to but if you could answer some of these questions, it would be great.

>What do you like the most on this website?
>What do you like the least?
>What functionalities are useful/useless?
>What functionalities do you absolutely need on a website like this?
>How does it compare to other news sites you use?
>Any suggestions for improvement?
>>
why the fuck is it in latin
>>

It's Lorem ipsum.
>>
The sidebar isn't very intuitive with just the icons by themselves. It would work for a social media site, but not a news/digital media site

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I removed them thinking that the icons are pretty self explanatory, but it may not be the case, especially for the first one, I guess.

Is this better?

>>292432
>>292433
Yeah, I don't have much content yet, so some older articles just use lorem ipsum for now.

Anyway, do you guys know some other places I can get some feedback? I am aware this board is not focused much around web design so I don't expect much help, but I really need as much feedback for my thesis as I can get. I'm kinda desperate honestly, I'm struggling with this and learning during the process, but my mentor is pretty much useless and I'm all by myself.
>>
>>292438
I would increase the line spacing between the text and the icon by just a few pixels. They looked smashed together
>>
>>292442
I agree, didn't write anything after posting it. Anything else you'd like to mention?

I'm constantly going through states of being satisfied with an overall look to states of dissappointment. I spent a lot of time on doing a bunch of different versions and I lost all objectivity.

I mean, I'd like to know the most if the usability is good. I wanted to experiment with this fixed sidebar and its functionalities but I always feel a need to change everything again when I see something new and interesting on the web.

I'm really lost in all of this, I never designed anything this large and detailed and I learned a lot but I really want it to be as good as possible.

But I'm still struggling with the direction and never trust myself completely.

Here are some recent (minor) redesigns of certain things, different headers, with a sidebar hidden, but the left-most part shown, with centered and clean article layout etc. I picked the one you can see online at the moment, but I don't know anymore if it's the best one.
>>
>>292445
not sure of the point of the Circle menu button. It looks nice, but wondering if that and the current implementation of the sidebar works from a usability POV.
>>
>>292449
I saw that menu idea on some UX blog. I think that it's kinda not that necessary on a desktop site, but useful on mobile. I thought about adding a scroll-to-top function there as well, as that is what usually that button does.

I can't tell myself how good the sidebar works. From the previous feedback it seems to work, but it might be good to make it collapsible at all times. and possibly hidden on default. The thing is that I designed the layout around it so that they work together. I wanted to have a recommended content always on screen, but far enough to separate the articles from it so that they are clean (usual option would be to cram that content just to the right of the text, or, more recent trend, to not have anything at all except just the text).
>>
>>292475
Make that menu close when the user clicks away. At this time it only closes If I click on it again.
>>
>>292491
Yep, I'm aware of it, will fix it. Thanks.

Btw, guys, what do you think of this style compared to mine?

http://calvertjournal.com/articles/show/6830/romanian-new-wave-cinema-puiu-mungiu-porumboiu

This minimalism is getting popular, I tried to make it clean by always having a lot of whitespace around it so the sidebar doesn't come in the way, but I don't know anymore.

I mean, I can't change a design constantly, and I already got to this version after numerous redesigns and feedback. But I just... Always think it's not right and can be better. And it's killing me from the inside.

Bump. Thinking about hiding a sidebar on default.

Please help. I don't know why am I mostly getting ignored on /gd/. Changed some things on a front page, but it doesn't feel right. I'd really appreciate some feedback.

If you want to get more feedback, you need to be way clearer in your OP post. As soon as I start reading your WALL of text I get non-stop self-pity and desperation.

Tell me
a) what kind of feedback you want
b) what your intention is with the work (i.e. reviews, news, etc.)
and
c) link me the work.

Simple, quick. Why do I have to read through your sad waffling before I realise it's a news site? Then if I don't read it, I stumble on a Latin / Croatian page. What is the site supposed to be? I have no idea how I'd use it. So I have no idea how to review it. So I click X.
>>
>>292832
Everything is written in the OP, man. Link is at the top of the post, immediately after it I mentioned the kind of feedback I'd like to hear and in the green are the questions I'd like answered.

I see that I only forgot to mention it is a film portal, so it has news and movie reviews (even though it should be pretty obvious when you follow the link).

Think for a moment about looking for a feedback on a image board mainly used to search for porn. Because that's what 4chan is in my opinion...
I think you would get better, honest feedback in Developers Hrvatska on Facebook. Here it's all about porn and burning others.

Work related:

() You have pages like:
awwwards.com
dribbble.com
behance.net

> Browse those for inspiration.

() There are really good articles about design practices all around. Google and read - stuff will be more vivid and understandable.
Also, Infinum in Croatia have really good weekly newsletter about design practices, news and interesting articles from around the world.

> Subscribe to that if you plan on doing this type of work more often.

() When searching online for inspiration do not just copy what you see, or apply everyone's critique. Think about specific implementation and WHY is it done that way... It's called user experience. So basically you put yourself in a shoes of a typical user.
Imagine a couple of different users who browse your webpage. One is a IT guy, other is a lazy student who smokes weed, another one is a girl who can barely use instagram.
That will give you a bit different perspective when you lose your objectivity.
Everything starts with a user, they should be your focus.

> Write your thoughts and observations down and stick to them when lost or in doubt!

() Always think of minimizing your user journey. That is, remove the redundant links and pages if you have any.
I come from mobile applications side, but it's pretty much the same.
The circle menu on bottom is redundant, replace it with "return to top" arrow. On mobile you can always use hamburger menu, or something simmilar. You have the same menu on top, right?
This is just one of thing that can be improved.

Anyways, this turned out to be too much of a text. Good luck with future work.
The chance of me returning here is less than 2%.

Pozdrav od kolege dizajnera!

Wow, thanks so much for this (even if you don't see this)! Yeah, I definitely spent a lot of time browsing through all of the sites you mentioned for this project - I believe I learned a lot, but this is still my first full website design, and I only did a few small things prior to this.

I agree with everything else. This is for my uni project, so I read a dozen or so books about the subject, and there is still plenty more, but I definitely lack experience.

Hvala.
