Could somebody explain to me, how one can achieve this effect?

Alright, so what you want to do is threshold, colorize, invert, then colorize again. That should get you this effect. I'm using GIMP, but anything it can do, Photoshop can do better (supposedly).

If you invert it again and adjust brightness and contrast to your desired amount, you get this effect.

What this nigge said sounds about right, then you could add a little noise and desaturate a bit (vice versa maybe?) to get the papery look.

where do i get the graphics branca uses to make his collages? i have a hard time to get photos which would do any good in my designs.

It looks like they pulled images from a Pottery Barn magazine for everything but the skull. Birdcage, fake owl, and a globe.
