There's definitely some progress going on. Stop using MS paint and just do it all in Gimp. Do some research on visually pleasing color schemes. Stop putting them all on a black background.
Get good enough at this, shit one out onto a backdrop of greyscale mountains, and you've got yourself a typical wallpaper.

He could probably just add a slight (gaussian) blur around the ends to make it look less rough, or even just do some extra cropping in GIMP to get the edges sharper/rounder.
