Thoughts on the new instagram logo?
Disgusting, looks like every other cheap camera or filter icon. The old one was the one skeuomorphic mark I liked, felt genuine and not easily recreated which made it unique, kind of like a banknote design.
Not bad actually.
What objective problem did the recreation solve?

I love it!!
>>269603
What was wrong with the old one that they needed a new one?
>>269608
The only thing I can think of is that it would scale better now
it's what a good rebranding should be, take the logo people know and love and update it to the new zeitgeist
that gradient tho, so 2015 it hurts. Hope they throw it away quickly
>>269607
link to wallpaper?
>gradient
What year is this again
It's bad.
>le ultra minimalism 2015 meme
>le ugly gradient

Here it looks better, still to meme for me

I'm on mobile but here is the wallpaper, google image search for a larger version if possible.
>>269603
This was unnecessary.
>>269607
TOP KEK ameripoor!!
>>269603
Why is minimalism such a big meme in the early 21st century? Is it because of the whole "omg we're in the future now!!1!!" Mentality that people now have since we coexist with tech that we couldn't imagine existing 10 years ago?
>>269678
What's the matter Sendai?
Following the memedesign flat trend :^)
Attached are leaks for the future Instagram design changes - these are 100% legit, trust me guys my uncle works at nintendo
>>269603
Looks cheap. I bet someone got paid a lot of money to design that though
b-but i liked the polaroid one
These where the other options they had.
>>269603
Hate the gradient.
>>269614
Looks good without the gradient.

Legit design process right there
I think is pretty based, they needed to mordenize their logo, the last one looked like an antique on any smartphone screen
>>269703
>The blurry one
>>269703
In my honest opinion all of those look better than the current one with the exception of that one weird black square on the top left.
>>269603
ah, what are logos nowadays without gradients.....
>it sucks balls and shouldn't be that big deal....
Sucks ass.
>>269603
When will this stop?
>>269603
It's sad the amount of people who think skeuomorphic is shit. The old logo was beautiful and iconic, this new one looks like a fucking washing machine.
>>269603
>>269703
To be completely honest with you family, if I had the power to choose for them I would pick the bold orange one.
this one was a pretty sick concept
Hate the fucking gradient, but the black & white version is nice, though a bit dull.
>>269748
This one's kinda neat
It's gradient things is back? I see lot of website now using gradient design
>>269607
>thinking that looking like stock Apple icons is not bad
Love the app redesign, hate the new logo.
The black and white really focuses on the actual content, which is honestly the best philosophy for media sharing apps. It was a needed change.
The rainbow is cringe-tier, gay, and pathetic. Seriously though, the gradient is an eyesore. I wouldn't have minded a stripping-down or flattening of the old logo, probably converting to one color, but this is just standard iOS meme magic design trash. Fortunately, I'm not a pleb, so I can use icon packs to get away from having it on my screen.
>>269748
This is nice
>>269741
Agree wholeheartedly
>>269705
Just flatten it out then
>>269684

>>269614
The app design is amazing now, kinda wish they just went with a flat black logo
>>269731
Truuuuuu
If it wasn't for the gradient it would be nice. The old one looked like shit in small screens.
Was it so difficult to make something like pic related?
Genuinely baffled as to why they didnt properly incorporate the lil corner rainbow from the old logo!!!! I mean, it was time for an update and everything but it looks like shit on my LG

I felt that their old logo was a branding masterpiece. Instagram is so, so foolish to have discarded it. Yuge mistake.

Not really the best logo that they could've made need more detail.

no thanks
apart from that it's solid and would actually be an improvement on their old logo
I revert all of you to episode 69 of 99% invisible. yes the design is bad but it should be judged fairly.

That drop shadow would be actually ok on an icon.

>>269679
It's not a big meme, it's because we transitioned from skeumorphic to more abstract shapes.
Back when the net and apps and shit just launched, things needed to look like real life.
A button had to look like a button. An actual button, else people would not know you could interact with it. People knew it could be clicked because it looked like the thing they knew from real life.
This applies to a lot of things, and explains the early iOS versions very well. Everything in the first iOS is made to reflect real life. Pic related is a good example.
The interface looks like paper and leather because people are used to this. It made it feel familiar and easy to use. People understand their paper notebook, so they understand the app.
We have grown and changed. We are more familiar with apps and interfaces. Because of this design can become more abstract. I find ghost buttons to be a good example. Just a some text with a border around it.
Things keep getting more abstract because we finally can and no longer need real life to guide us.
>>269761
What sites? Name a few. Genuinely curious. Design trends are always interesting.

if your that anal about drop shadow , you can achieve that same effect with gradient

Not who you were replying to, but from the top of my head Spotify is one company which is using tons of gradients.
I think the Verge uses some on their site too.
>>270081
Correct. But!
Flat design has its own usability issues aswell. Just because everyone is hyping around it, it doesnt mean Flat movment has solved the most of the issues.
Sure it looks simple and beatiful, but for example I've came across many ghost buttons that werent even clickable, and I thought they are...

They had to let Michael J. Fox get at least one go at it
>>269885
I will :(
I thought were over with gradients. thats so early 2000's
>>269679
It's exactly because of what you say, it has it's origins in art, people have come to equate minimalism with modernity and with the boom of apple it replaced the more cyberpunk flavor of futurism that was more prevalent up to the early 2000's, this is notorious as popular culture has become more prone to depict advanced technology with simplified curvy forms and shiny white casing
Modern first world people seem to find an intrinsic value in reducing objects to their minimum requirement for utility, if you research history of aesthetics you will realize that this is a trend caused by a society with high market demands and an increasing pressure to reduce production cost
So in short, marketers push minimalism onto us because it's more profitable, and the trend won't go away soon if overpopulation continues or somehow ornate designs become more profitable again
>>269603
To me it seems like it now lacks a certain "uniqueness" but as another Anon mentioned the former icon wasn't too distinguishable either.
I don't like the background gradient either. Feels like one of your predefined gradients from any image manipulation program.
However it now fits in to the more minimal design language which I like. Also the services acquired by Facebook have similar design language in their icons.
here's my attempt at it.
>>269704
their update should have been something like this
>>270276
The old icon was by far the most distinguishable out there amongst those apps. While all the other app icons had gone minimal, this one stood out because it had depth but in a way that was pleasant to look at. People even started calling polaroids 'the instagram camera'.
The problem was in my opinion that while it looked good on a phone amongst other icons, it looked like shit from a business perspective. Imagine putting the old logo on a business letter or email for example, it just wouldn't look good for the company as a whole.
>>270394
way better than the official icon
>>270394
But how will I make a pig out of this? It sucks!

Excuse me, logo creation was a very time-consuming process which culminated in a timeless symbol representing the pinnacle of graphic design, exhibiting eclectic influences of the middle east, ancient egypt and the mayan empire. It's been centuries in the making, anon.

This looks pretty nice... but the gradient is fucking terrible. Love the UI though, black & white completely makes sense because now the photos are so much more impactful. Fuck knows what they were smoking to make them think that gradient was a good idea though...
I don't think the new logo is a trash fire but the old skeuomorphic version was one of the only icons in that style that I liked. Sorry to see it go.
