Why would they take years of effort in establishing a brand and logo to throw it away through the window...
>>

Because they came under heavy fire in several countries and now tried to rebrand themselves to get away from the image of being a company of souldestroying cunts?

This is exactly why it's shit. Tell me, did you know it was the Southern Cross before being told?

But it's really not? The apple logo is like the nike swoosh to me [and most designers who know what they're talking about lol]

It's one of the absolute most timeless designs. It's one of maybe 5 logos that is perfect. Geometrically brilliant, balanced extremely well, it's iconic as fuck, very few simple shapes make it up so it can be scaled almost infinitely.. I could go on for paragraphs more.

Say what you want about apple the company, but apple the logo is seriously as perfect as a logo can be.

>>263774
Whut? Nike's tick is a meaningless shape that piggybacked the success of basketballers, after it was put on their shoes. Anything else would be just as iconic.
>>
>>263786
It's not a meaningless shape. Not a single shape is meaningless. Everything has meaning. Everything. It's the absolute fundamentals of design.

The nike swoosh has movement and speed, it reflects athleticism and growth. It also is reminiscent of the sole of a running shoe. It's directional and very long and pointy [which is why it looks 'fast'] but the thick base still grounds it.

I'm not going to do any sort of real writeup on why it's a good logo, but to say it's a meaningless shape is ignorant.

While yes, other logos may have become as iconic as the nike swoosh, I really doubt it. That's what a lot of logos are anyway, just 'meaningless shapes'. The logo is not by any means the reason for their success, but it contributed to it, a lot.

It's also how that logo fits on a shoe, the shape it makes on a foot and interacts with the panels and stitching and sole and laces of a shoe.
>>
>>263787
It's good, yep. It hit the brief -- 'portray movement, look good on a shoe' but beyond that it's fairly arbitrary. It's hardly the pinnacle of design, iirc the designer wasn't happy/finished and neither was Nike.

I think its recognition owes less to pure design than hardcore branding.
>>
>>263788
>and neither was Nike

To clarify, they took a 'fuck it it will do' approach. They didn't get all
>Holy dick balls this is geometric perfection, look at how it embodies speed and athletic performance while being reminiscent of a shoe sole. Also it looks like the wing of the Nike god (even though we haven't decided on that name) but hnng the geometry.

how is it that there is no one in the "free as in freedom" community that cares about design? it doesn't have to be a priority, but it could exist in any form whatsoever and it wouldn't get in the way of practicality.

it's going to create a problem in the future if they ever decide to be taken seriously by the mainstream public, as all attempts at coherent redesign will be stabs in the dark with nothing to base it around.

>>

that's completely understandable but it just baffles me that there seems to be no one even concerned with design in what's a relatively large community. though i expect they would be met with backlash from the pragmatics.

i'm learning programming and i'm a design amateur (like barely two months in) at the same time and i feel like i could come up with something at least trendier, if not short-lived, than what they have now.

The nike logo is good, but so call it a masterpiece like many designers do would be an overstatement imo. It's hard to tell how iconic it actually is because of branding and heavy marketing. You can't really get an objetive opinion on the subject. Personally i think that the Nike logo is a bit boring because it's so plain, but that also happens to be it's biggest strength. Because the logo looks really good on shoes, especially compared to it's rival Adidas. Who always manages to implement their logo in the tackiest way. Pic. related, Adidas logo are planted multiple places across the shoe, when all it really needs is one.
>>
>>263962
>yeah, and that only sold 40 million.
>they only had to listen, anon.

not entirely disagreeing with you either (the side sole branding is indeed superfluous, IMO) - however..

That (Stan Smith) was, is and remains an iconic design classic, and that by anyones definition - you could (maybe..) have picked a better example, god knows, there must be 3 million gaudier/trashier Nikes. Pic related is, taking the marketplace into account, an example of relatively restrained design/branding, the success of which only an idiot could argue with.
>>

>>
>>264105
Honestly I like all of them for different reasons.

2005 version probably fit the company best in terms of comics, 1976 version looks more like a skaterwear brand but it has the simplistic and oldschool look that I really like.

Then the 2012 get's a looooot of hate here because of the gradient, but I really like it because it's kinda refreshing and unique in the world of Ć¼berminimalism and flat design we have today.

So ranking them is impossible for me, because they all fill different roles.
>>
>>264105
1976 and 2012 are both pretty good

Guys actually Nike is the name of the ancien greek goddess, 'Nike' meaning 'victory'. It is also attributed to athena when she is depicted as victorious (called then Athena Nike).
This goddess/victourious form has wings.
The so called 'swoosh' is litterally a stylized wing.

the new TAG Heuer logo irks me so much

the old "TAG" monogram was superb, and to ditch it not only for a regular, easily (even freely) available typeface (Humanist 521 aka Gill Sans) they'd already used in their wordmark, they castrated the remainder of the Heuer logo by carelessly stretching it, and ruining its balance.
>>

do you see how they stretched the word "TAG" in the new one? one of the fundamental rules of typography is you never, ever, ever, squash the proportions of your typeface. i expect that type of mistake from a school teacher doing a powerpoint presentation, not a graphic designer creating a logo for a high-end Swiss watch company.

Eh, using the rings is kind of a neat idea, but it's not great. I think Paris is the worst of them, though.
>>
>>270210
What's wrong with Paris'? I thought it was the best of them all. It's a 2, it's a 4, it's the Eiffel tower, it's the olympic colours, it's reminiscent of the ribbon gymnastics/ribbon crossing the finish line/ribbon holding up a medal, what more do you need?
>>
>>270212
It vaguely suggests things, but there's nothing substantive there; they ended up doing many things poorly, instead of a couple well. And you're really reaching with the ribbon stuff. Besides, that twirly shit is the stupidest event ever. The only reason to watch it is the underage camel toes.
>>
>>270213
>really reaching with the ribbon stuff
>vaguely suggests things

Wow really? What would you have it be? just "PARIS 2024 OLYMPIC GAMES" in Impact font with photographs of people playing sports below it? How obvious to you want it to be? Until it's slapping you in the face?
>>
>>270215
you say it's the eiffel tower, but it doesn't really look like it; you wouldn't see that unless you were expecting it. it's got a two-ish looking thing, but it's next to what looks more like a one, and again, you really have to be looking for a four to see it. it's got four of the olympic colors, but it's a gradient, so it has a bunch of other non-olympic colors too; and it doesn't even really have the french colors, unless you count the background for white. and you say it's ribbons, but it just looks like broad paint strokes. if you take it out of context, there's nothing there - you can't identify it as parisian, french, olympic, or even just sport related. it is entirely reliant on context, and i think that makes it bad
>>
>>270218
Once again, what would you want? Just the most straightforward thing in the world? Jesus Christ man if you think that logo is too subtle I feel sorry for your life, it must be a real struggle when you got to Burger King and don't know what they sell.

Alright, here is some more in depth criticism. Why are there pink edges? why is the top left edge so jagged? what does it have to do with the Southern Cross? Or Australia, or the Commonwealth or banking? How would that work in black and white? What's the point of all the gradients?

The gradients look terrible, when black and yellow mix it just makes a gross brown, there is no reason for anything in that image.

So all in all, it's garbage, you should start again from scratch.

Really? That's the same for every fucking logo. Apple, Nike, Amazon, Google, Target, Shell, Playstation

Take any of these logos and take away the text and you have no idea what they are for. Oh Apple with a bite out of it, that must be a tech company that sell overpriced computers and phones. Oh a tick...shoes! Oh Amazon? With an arrow under it? That's an online retailer for sure. A P with a S for a shadow in multicolour...ohhh gaming console, of course!

You getting my sarcasm here or should I keep going?
>>
>>272465
It doesn't have to go all the way into it. You can at the very least infer SOMETHING about the company with a reasonable degree of accuracy from most of the logos you've listed. [Also, most are far simpler and more distinctive shapes.]

Apple, you can very quickly infer that - SHOCK - the company is named Apple. Could Mozart be still alive?
Nike, the only one I'll grant on ambiguity, although it still serves to evoke motion. Considering the swoosh often has "NIKE" above it anyway...
Amazon: Starts with an A. Ships things. Lord Lucan involved somehow?
Google: I wonder what G+O+O+G+L+E could mean. Give me a while.
Target: Hmm, this icon seems almost... bullseye shaped. Perhaps the answer lies in the Nazi secret base in Neuschwabenland.
Shell: It's a fucking shell. What did he mean by this?
Playstation: Acronym of company name. E=MC2?

>Apple
Alright, so you know what the company is called, what do they do? Who knows, who cares, they haven't told me at all, I'm not hungry for fruit right now.
>Nike
Motion..oh that's almost "shoes" it invokes motion as much as the Paris Olympic logo (swirling ribbons) and I would say the Olympics have more to do with motion than Nike
>Amazon
An arrow means ships things? Now that's a fucking leap, and let's see what other companies start with A...oh look, a fucking billion.
>Google
Oh yeah, and what do they do? Google...something to do with large numbers? A child's toy company? Who the fuck knows.
>Target
You're right, maybe they sell archery supplies...oh wait no it's clothes and toys and shit, forget that, must be a different company
>Shell
Ohh so they are a seaside resort?
>Playstation
Pun System? Planet Security? Pandimensional Subterfuge? Who the fuck knows.

Oh my god, you've cracked it! Almost like how the target logo has "TARGET" below it...or like how Shell has "SHELL" below it...and Playstation has "Playstation" below it...or like the Paris Olympics logo has "PARIS" and "Ville Candidate jeus OLYMPIQUES de 2024" below it

>He's said the icons are evocative of names... i know, let's pretend he said they evoke purpose!
Picture of a shell = Company is named shell is far more intuitive than "These rainbow lines are the Olympics in Paris."

That you continued to attack Nike even when I said "Nike... I'll grant on ambiguity." really fucking underlines this.

Without the word "Shell" under it, Shell remains obvious. The same is not true of the Paris Olympic logo. This becomes even more apparent when you consider use cases like logos on vehicles.

It's in the shape of the eiffel tower...

Please tell me, what exactly would say "Paris Olympics 2024" to you. I would like to see if you can say ANYTHING that would say those words in an image that could be considered a decent logo. Words like "Shell" or "Target" or "Apple" are simple concepts, they are an object that you can turn into a logo easily, "Paris Olympics 2024" isn't one of those things. Not EVERY logo needs to be the same, they don't need to be a symbol that represents the name of the company/product. Windows is a window (sort of) but this is only one type of logo. Let's look at some fast food logos. KFC is a picture of a guy...this doesn't represent "Kentucky Fried Chicken" it's not a picture of chicken, kentucky or frying, but it still represents the company (as it's a picture of the creator) or what about Hungry Jacks (Burger King) the logo represents a burger, with the words being the content, it isn't a king (or a Jack) so it's not a symbol that represents the name but a symbol what they do.

There are many different types of logos, some to do with the name, some to do with the product, sometimes a mixture of both and some to do with either (as you pointed out, car logos fall into that category a lot of the time) so what you're basing your hate off of is nothing, this Paris Olympic logo falls into a different category of logo than you think all logos fall into,

After you've been told what it is.

It's also a 4. And ribbons. And colours that link in with olympic rings. And 21. And the trail of smoke coming out the back of an aerobatic display team's jets. Possibly some kind of Japanese character?

I don't hate it. I said he had a valid point that it doesn't clearly represent anything. It tries to be too clever and it ends up with nothing.

Burger King's logo is very obviously a Burger. It can be inferred quite easily that KFC's logo [which, to some degree, is actually the distinctive "KFC" text.] of the founder is the creator of the company.

The Paris logo tries to be too clever and ends up representing nothing at all by being too ambiguous.

Tangential point:
There's also the fact that as a logo for a sporting event with a fixed date, it won't really get the chance to become culturally notable the way logos like the golden arches [McDonalds] can do.

If this logo was going to last 100 years for a repeating sporting event, perhaps what it means would be drilled into people's heads effectively. But that's not happening. After 2024 nobody will care to remember it except us, who'll still be arguing about it's merits on VR 4chan.
