recently installed Ubuntu on this shitty old Lenovo with an Intel i2 T5800.
originally running Vista, support for it ended early this year.
after an hour of using, most of the shit seems idiotproof, but are there things about the OS that the average person would miss, quirks and such.
Did I fuck up, for choosing Ubuntu. should I just pirate win7?

Ubuntu is fine for babbys first linux, but there are definitely more distros out there that were made to run on lower-end hardware like that.
Check out lubuntu or xubuntu for a faster idiot-proof experience.

Ubuntu is perfectly fine. Don't listen to the Gentoo and Arch shills who say "kek, brainlet" if you don't use those two. If you've never used Linux before then Ubuntu is perfect. It will give you everything you need to start and also a good platform to customize and learn on. Just learn the basics like using the command line to install programs; create, move copy and delete files/directories; use programs in the terminal with commands instead of with a GUI.
But look at different desktop environments since Unity is going to abandon Unity in the 18.04 LTR. Personally I like XFCE and MATE. But I used Lubuntu with LXDE and it's very quick and snappy, good for older hardware.
