>smarphones have the computational power of a low end desktop IN YOUR POCKET

Question, why do smartphones, despite having enough computational power, don't actually have any interface to DO COMPUTATIONAL WORK on? They're just media delivery devices.
My smartphone can do real time 3D rendering, encrypt data, compile programs, and basically do anything, BUT THERE IS NO FUCKING INTERFACE TO DO ANY OF IT. You can't fucking type on a smartphone, and there isn't even basic fucking I/O functionality outside of wireless communication.
I can't even plug a dongle into my phone to program hardware with it, I can't use it to send RFID signals to open my car door, I can't use it to interface with any other device outside of sending selfies. I can't use it as a portable DAC despite it having such functionality, I can't use it to create content, I can't replace my heavy, obsolete digital effects pedal/mixers and plug my guitar into it because the thing doesn't have fucking analog inputs.
It has more computational power than my desktop had ten years ago, yet I can't do anything with it, all I can do is render emojis at 1080p. And you know what? It's not even about size. No portable devices have any productive functionality. Not tablets, not even laptops. They're just fucking tracking and blue pill dispensing devices.

WHERE IS THE FUTURE WE WERE PROMISED?
>>
A device that can do everything focuses on nothing. Smartphones are kept simple because that's what their target demographic demands.
>>
>>62461574
Fuck you, a smartphone is the perfect form factor for an RFID card with the added benefit of two factor authentication and added security in that the device can use its own power to send signals, so your data can't be jacked by an RFID receiver.

Yet nobody has done it.
>>
>>62461574
Uh huh, I sure can't remember the last time multi-purpose modular computational devices such as PERSONAL COMPUTERS and SUPERCOMPUTERS have accomplished anything.
Moron.
>>
>>62461503
>I can't
That must suck.
>>
>>62461503
Smartphones are very capable and have great potential but nobody cares enough to write good software for it.

Like you, I want to see phones become tools again geared towards powerusers. Remember, Android is Open Source and you are free to create applications for Android.

Be the change you want to see in the world, all it takes is one person to start the trend of creating actual software with no micro-transactions on Android.
>>
>>62461738
I'm really more worried about the hardware state of things.
Phones don't even have hotswap removable storage and I/O ports anymore.
What's software good for if it can't communicate with other devices directly without the limitations of wireless technology and all the issues and latency that brings about?
>>
>>62461503
the 100$ win10 china pads are best suited, you can use desktop apps, attach it to a TV, attach a wireless keyboard, have bios access, kill everything install linux, use it as home server. they don't trap you in a walled garden. just saying.
>>
>>62461854
>Phones don't even have hotswap removable storage
USB OTG works fine
>>
Fuck this, I'm buying an ARM SoC and putting it into a 3D printed case.
At least I can stick as many dongles into the gpio ports as I want.

I'll just have to reinvent my own wheels.

>smarphones have the computational power of a low end desktop IN YOUR POCKET

Yeah... no they don't.

Your desktop has DC power connection and dedicated cooling systems. Your phone has a 10Wh battery and it has CPU and ram chips sitting on top of each other surrounded with plastic and with no cooling systems whatsoever.. If you ran your computer at 60W constantly like a desktop computer, the battery would explode and/or your phone would cook itself

In reality a smartphone can barely deal with a Javascript-heavy web page.

Get a Raspberry Pi and put it in a sturdy case if you want a portable low-end general computing platform with plenty of i/o.
>>
>>62462445
i mean a phone has a DC connection coming from the battery
>>
>>62461937
>the 100$ win10 china pads are best
> they don't trap you in a walled garden
Bullshit. They can't run anything except win10.
>>
>>62462508
That doesn't resolve the overheating problem, hell, it even enhances it.

I think the biggest problem is that you don't understand how phone hardware works, nor it's limitations. You're starting to sound like those guys that have "a great idea" for an app.
>>
>>62461503
Dumb frogposter. Android supports all HID devices, has busybox, terminal, even a couple of IDEs. You can even chroot I
into a literal desktop distro. Build your own kernel with whatever modules you need. That's assuming you have a consumer friendly device(like you should), not some locked down POS, like Samsung.
>>
>>62461503

Hook it up to blutooth keyboard and mouse and synch it up to a TV

Tadah dumbass
>>
>>62462964
there enough guides how to do it on XDA. more important is that those are x86 without a trimmed down OS even when using win10
>>
>>62461503
Because they still want to sell overpriced PCs to silly goyim
>>
>>62462508
I meant AC
>>
>>62461503
you realize that phones do EXACTLY what normies want them to do.

selfies, porn, and shitty games. Normies wanted a timesink so that's what was made.
>>
>>62461503
I can play San Andreas on my phone. That's pretty good computational power right?
>>
>>62463025
That's not a hardware problem, that's a form factor problem.

There's no reason phones can't have decent cooling and battery power, if not for the "THINNER" meme.

Who gives a fuck if a phone is thin anyway? A 5 inch phone will feel the same in your hand whether it's 3mm or 10mm thick.
>>
>>62461503

the people who buy smartphones don't do computational work
>>
>>62463025
>you don't understand how phone hardware works
I think you don't know what kind of bullshit desktop CPUs contain and why they consume so much power. In pure number crunching ARM CPUs are already reaching desktop CPUs for the fraction of power, if we could clock them higher(yes, better cooling would help here) they would be more than just viable - they would be competitive. Their biggest problem I think is underdeveloped caching.
>>
>>62462445
>In reality a smartphone can barely deal with a Javascript-heavy web page.
Except that's false. You can play games on par (in mechanics) with mid to late games on a modern phone. Hell, last time I checked apples cyclone or w/e had cores as wide as a Haskell core and now the newest Apple cores are clocking similarly to the y-series processors, given only the base clock but that still makes it comparable to a bulldozer or jaguar core at 2x the frequency. Phones are not at all underpowered nowadays. The cores are surprisingly big and are decently performant.

>>62461503
Who the fuck promised you a future where you would do real work on a tiny as fuck, battery-powered device which you operate with your fat fingers?

There's nothing to it, small touchscreens which have to be imprecisely operated using large fingers simply aren't going to be useful for real work. They can only support a UI which requires very simple interactions and cannot display a lot of information on screen at once. They have to be designed around their most common usage scenarios, which are all simple tasks that do not require a lot of input from the user.

The PDAs from the olden days which were designed from the ground up to be operated with a much more precise stylus did to some degree manage to have more flexibility in terms of their UI at least, but those days are gone. Even Android phones which do have a stylus are still shackled to the general Android UI which is not designed for use with a stylus.

You can do everything, anon.

Also, the protocol is trivial, you can DIY.

>I can't use it to send RFID signals to open my car door
You can't do exactly that because it's not just RFID, it's crypted, but you sure can do radio stuff:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=marto.androsdr2&hl=en

>I can't use it to interface with any other device outside of sending selfies
You can, through USB OTG, Bluetooth, UART, headphone jack, wifi...

>I can't use it as a portable DAC despite it having such functionality
You sure can receive audio stream to do just that with some added latency.

>I can't use it to create content
It won't be convenient to do. But you can.

>I can't replace my heavy, obsolete digital effects pedal/mixers and plug my guitar into it because the thing doesn't have fucking analog inputs.
How do you think wired headsets work? Every phone has a mic input. You just won't be happy with how it works (you won't be happy with PC audio input, too, though). But you can attach an external audio card.

So, it's just you. Go code shit if you need it, everything is there.
>>
They are inferior to anything else that can do computing. What the hell would you WANT to compute on a phone. You can SSH from your phone into your 24/7 uptime home server to perform a computing task on lots of RAM, proper CPU and GPU. But it would mean that something in your architecture/work process is retarded.
>>
you gotta jail break and rice your own stuff. if you can, get your hands on some old or chink phones with a physical keyboard.
