We're still evolving stupid creatures made of goddamn boxes. The main thing that changed is we got more computational power to simulated them. Sure the physics got a little bit better, but the evolved creatures are wholly unrealistic and will never work in the real world. Friction isn't even modeled right and evolved virtual creatures tend to have to be put on sand paper or sand in order for them to work in the real world.

Not that artificial life matters for much anyway, it was a fad when it came out, it's a fad now.

Nah, what's needed are better friction models and actuator models. Instead of using a FUCKING GAME engine like bullet, one should use a dynamics engine with actual friction models.
