if you want help:
>Assemble parts list

How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - If you need multithreading
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use, not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>VEGA
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM, 3200 MHz is ideal

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

reposting question from previous thread:
got a few questions about cases. currently using an NZXT source 210 elite along with an overclocked AMD [email protected]. im sure you can imagine that it runs hot as fuck. the actual package temp is fine under a corsair h90, but the socket temperature i was having issues.
during stress tests, the socket temp would skyrocket to 70c+ in mere seconds. i looked all over online and found a few people saying that its a flaw with the case; that hot air gets trapped behind the back panel where the cpu socket is exposed and quickly heats it up.
i removed the back panel, put a small fan on the cpu socket and tried to seal the open areas as best as i could. it completely fixed my socket temperatures, dropping them by 15-20c.

im wondering if that was the actual problem(hot air getting trapped) or if this overclocked chip just ran that hot and needed a fan on the back?
im wondering because my ryzen build is nearly complete and i dont know if i should purchase a new case or not. my corsair h90 actually does NOT fit in the 210 elite; its askew and i cant mount a fan directly to the radiator; i had to put it on the outside of the case on top. cant fit the 2nd fan at all.
this is the case i was considering buying: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811854003

i know its full tower and huge, but i want to be absolutely sure that the radiator fits. anyone have or know if this case is good, any weird problems with it, stuff like that?

zen 2/zen+ comes after ryzen, whatever they end up calling it. unlike intel, this is the first improvement to the zen arch, so its gonna be more like going from a first gen core processor to a second gen, aka the best generation of processors in the last 10 years. beyond that, if the node they're using is anything like it's specs suggest, we're looking at huge boosts in clockspeed provided the zen arch can handle it. So think 10-15% improvements in ipc, putting them firmly ahead of intel core/core clock/clock, and another 25-30% clockspeed
pretty massive jump there, also potentially 12c/24t 65-95w mainstream parts, depending on if they up the ccx to 6 instead of 4. all on the am4 socket, which you'll have if you go zen now

>Even Nvidia has given up on it.
not necessarily.
The reason for SLI and Crossfire not being as well utilized these days is because of Microsoft, specifically the new DirectX12 API. DX12 (and the Chronos Groups Vulkan API) gives the game developers almost complete control over resource distribution during games. All previous APIs handled that for developers, taking it out of their control. Now the game developers are in control. And for better or worse, this means THEY have to code in support for Crossfire and SLi into the game. It's no longer up to nvidia or AMD to put support into the drivers.

I think I'll hold off on the $40 R7 360. Even for $40, $40 is 1/5th the way to a 1060. And the R7 360 can't crush 1080p. It can manage 30FPS, but can't get beyond that.

My next upgrade needs to smash 1080p into paste. Because it'll be a long-lived card until 2160p is viable.

Though I could still buy the R7 360 and then sell it for the $40 down the line when I decide to swap out. But I hate juggling hardware and dealing with people.
>>
anyone can tell anything good about v64 Liquid cooled?
I think even my Titanium 650w PSU is not enough though.

>>
>>62437459
not related to your case but there's a lot of documentation on the socket temps effecting overclocking on the 8350. some older antec cases had support for a fan behind the socket, obviously there arent cases with that anymore. You could try getting something like a slipstream a nice thin fan and just cutting a hole on the back, then getting a fan grill for the back
when i had airflow across the back of my socket on my 8350 it let me hit 4.9 as opposed to 4.8, ymmv

>sli
>in this day and age
>>
>>62439492
you know, a lot of people that shit on sli have never used it. ive used cfx and sli, and while sli isnt perfect it's pretty damn nice in most cases, and beyond that you can pick up a 970 off ebay for around 150-160 if you're patient, and thats a huge performance upgrade for the money
>>
>>62439442
Looks neat. You might wanna switch out the case for something better. Maybe something Fractal.

Also, change the mobo to something ASUS or Gigabyte.
>>
>>62439442
>>62439772
Also, Founder's cards are gonna be as hot as you allow them to be. I'd suggest picking up something cooler, maybe a Black OC or a Duke OC card.
>>
>>62439475
thanks for the input. like i said, i solved the temperature problem for the FX8350 with a fan on the back, directly on the cpu socket.
im asking if its an inherit problem with the case now because i am building and nearly done with a ryzen build. so basically im trying to decide if i should buy a better case with less/no airflow problems that can also fit my h90 radiator.
or if i should stick to my current case and risk high thermals on ryzen because of the same issues. i could of course solve them the same way im doing now(assuming ryzen runs cooler when OCd than an FX chip, and im pretty sure they do), but its pretty inconvenient; more dust gets in and i have to constantly buy compressed air cans to clean it and i have a very nice 140mm fan sitting around totally useless because it does not fit anywhere in my case, let alone near the radiator it was meant for.
>>
>>62439772
isnt the asrock taichi one of the best boards for ryzen? or is it only ryzen 3/5/7 and not threadripper?
or am i simply misinformed and there are better boards? if so, is it a big difference? i bought an x370 taichi for my ryzen 5 1600x build and i plan to overclock both ram and cpu as far as possible. i saw it is also a 12+4power phase board so it seems pretty solid for overclocking and in general.
>>
>>62439893
I just don't like Asrock as a company, or most of their boards. If you feel like you've been informed well then go with what you think is best.
>>
>>62439893
Taichi is the only x370 board from Asrock worth getting.

Most people would tell you to go Asus Crosshair VI Hero though.

I've been doing research on the x370 boards and it seems like all the budget ones have issues why is the AM4 platform so bad if you use a lot of drives? B350 shares too many lanes with other shit so you only have 4 sata when you use NVME, all the budget x370 boards got issues. Most of the AM4 boards got hot VRM issues, and the high end good x370 boards approach HEDT prices.

Asrock Taichi sells for more than a 1600X here for god knows what reason.
>>
Will Ryzen 3 work on a simple B350 board too or will they jew their way around that with new chipsets?
>>
>>62440566
RYzen 3 is already out and works fine with A320, B350, and X370 chipsets. though why you'd stick one in an X370 board is beyond me
>>
>>62440566
Of course it works. All the chips are unlocked so you don't need arbitrary K or X marking to overclock and you don't need expensive motherboard either to overclock as all B350 and X370 are capable of it. Only A320 is locked but why the hell would you buy that.
>>
Going to start my build today, here's quick checklist I've gathered from watching build guides

1. Prepare motherboard by putting in CPU and cooler and RAM
2. Prepare case, put in standoffs if needed
3. Put in IO shield
4. Mount motherboard
5. Mount SSD / Harddrive / Optical
6. Mount power supply
7. Connect everything up
8. Put in GPU and plug that in

am I missing something? The only fear I have is when I have to connect everything through cables, little worried about that
>>
>>62440657
assemble everything on the motherboard box first, outside the case, and make sure it boots, just in case you have to RMA anything immediately.
After a successful bot test, unattach all the PU wires, take out the GPU, and install everything in the case.
Makes it easier rather than trying to troubleshoot shit in the case
>>
>>62440711
how do i even power it on without the case power button

im a pcbuildlet and a brainlet
>>
>>62440637
>>62440640
No no, i don't mean the current Ryzen 3 4core CPU but the third generation of the Zen architecture, the ones in 7nm+ which will come out 2020 or so.
I wonder if they will really let those future CPUs run on "simple" current AM4 mainboards or still introduce things like AM4+.
>>
>>62440657
Mount GPU and run all the appropriate wires to where you want to connect them. Because after you mount your motherboard some of these wires can be extremely tricky to get into place (like the 4 pin CPU connecter which is supposed to come out from the top of your motherboard).

Make sure you are grounded and don't work on carpeted surfaces.
>>
>>62440733
Tap a screw driver and bidge the connectors where you'd plug in the case power button
>>
>>62440733
If you have a fancy motherboard, it should come with a power button on the mobo itself.

Otherwise, read the manual and then use a screwdriver to jump the 2 connects where your case power button is supposed to go.

With the 4+3 phase VRM AM4 motherboards hitting 90C+ with 6 core CPUs on a mild overclock, you might get the same problem when AMD introduced the FX9000 series they fit in the socket, but the power delivery wasn't beefy enough to drive them.

Makes me really wonder if I should spring for a good X370 board and 1700x, but then if DDR5 gets mainstream by the time I want to upgrade I'd be screwed.

If you're buying ram for Ryzen, Ryzen is very very picky with ram.

Most people will never get 3200 with multiple 16GB dimms
>>
>>62442767
I checked my motherboard support on msi website and they say it supports that exact ram at 3200mhz. So that's why I'm asking should I just buy the cheapest one that's supported or is it worth it anyway to spend a bit more. I guess at worst it should work at 3000mhz right?

>>
>aircooling
>watercooling

What is better for silent systems? While keeping decent temps obviously.
>>
>>62443223
Temps wise, unless you're getting the top end any Noctua Air cooler can match/beat the mid and low range liquid coolers.
In terms of noise, it really depends on which one you go with, e.g. BeSIlent Rock 2 is obviously going to be quieter than a Hyper 212 Evo. Same goes for their Liquid coolers as well. However, if you are tempted to go for a non-quiet liquid cooler a good silent case always mitigates it anyway.
tl;dr Noise varies from brand to brand. Temps are normally better when you have a liquid cooler with the exception of Noctua.
>>
>>62443038
I actually have a question relating to that. Is there any way to actively monitor the PSU's output to detect and alert you to irregularities?

Has nobody thought of that for computer power supplies?
>>
>>62443315

Well you're only confirming my suspicion that going with a Noctua cooler might be the best option for what I want.
>>
>>62443361
For Perf/Price Noctua is probably the best with probably only the hyper 212 evo being better. However, if you have a high budget than a high tier water cooler may only be a little noisy, while giving you more than necessary temps.
Are you Overclocking, because if you're not there's no reason to even buy Noctua or liquid coolers

>Are you Overclocking

I'm undecided. My plan is to build a new rig based around a coffee lake cpu in the following months with silence being the key issue next to that of performance. I'm not even planing on getting an HDD because of that.
I realize a high end cooler might be considered a waste if not overclocking but I do think there's some value to keeping temps low even if just for CPU health's sake. Also a Noctua is bound to be more reliable and less noisy than a cheaper alternative.
Alternatively I could just get an i3 like the 8350k and not care about temps at all and replace it in like 2-3 years.
I guess I'm pretty much indecisive.

SLI tends only to have issues in older games that wouldn't benefit from extra GPU horsepower anyway.

Even indie games without SLI profiles scale quite well with SLI. I did have quite a lot more trouble with CrossfireX, but I haven't run it since 2012 and suspect it's improved quite a bit since then.

Christ I can't get a POST.

Specs:
Ryzen 1600
MSI B350M Gaming Pro
Asus Dual 1060
Corsair Vengeance 3200
Seasonic 550w

The Mobo has four LED lights, the so called "EZ Led Debug" system, which indicates errors.

After getting the three lower lights lit, "DRAM error", VGA and Boot device. I tried fiddeling with the RAM, changing it around, and I finally found a configuration that gives me no lights, but no post either.

I dont know what to do, I've checked that everything should be plugged in, but for some reason I cannot turn off the PC by holding down the power button, the case is an R5 (there's no LED light in the front either)

1: Should I be able to hold down the power button and turn it off via that? Did I fuck up with the wiring?

2: Can fucked up wiring (LED, Power, Reset Switch) fuck with general booting?

But the power buttons works for ON, i just can't turn it off by holding it down, so I have to flip the PSU switch or it wont turn off

The power pin connector has no +/- so im not sure why it doesnt work

I get no LED lights in the front at all, so im not sure if I messed that up, I think I did it accordingly to the manual.
>>

Double check. Make sure your monitor is plugged in nicely. Make sure that every header is plugged into the mobo snuggly.
>>
>>62449525
I will try tomorrow, I've been building for the past 6 hours

I don't get how if I try with one of the ram sticks, in one of the slots, I get blarring LED lights warning for everything except the CPU, then I try the other stick, in another port (there are only two ram slots) and I get no warnings at all, but unfortunately no boot either.
>>
>>62449481
>The power pin connector has no +/- so im not sure why it doesnt work
Polarity doesn't matter. Pressing the switch shorts the two pins out.

>I get no LED lights in the front at all
Fucked up wiring, fucked up LEDs or fucked up mainboard. Check polarity, here it matters. The triangle on the connector indicates positive.

None of that should prevent your PC from POSTing though.
>>
>>62449583
> fucked up mainboard

It's giving me all these warnings via the LEDs though? So I'm not sure if the RAM are busted or the Mobo is busted.

You're sure bad wiring should not prevent POST? Fans are spinning, Power button works, but no LED in the front.
>>
Everyone says to install the CPU, cooler, ram and video card on the mobo and boot it up just to make sure everything works.
I watched some guy test his, but then he took everything out of the mobo again. Including the cooler that he then had to clean and reapply thermal paste to. Why didn't he just leave it all connected? The video card I can understand because of how unsteady it is, but why everything else?
>>
>>62443348
Corsair i series do that afaik
>>
>>62449624
>So I'm not sure if the RAM are busted or the Mobo is busted.
Only way to tell is trial and error. Test with one DIMM at a time, in both slots, for both DIMMs. Its pretty unlikely that both are dead.

Fucked up wiring will not prevent it from POSTing, as long as you don't short anything out. Can't do that with the LEDs, and not with the power/reset button.

Are you sure its not POSTing and you just simply don't get an image? You connected the monitor to the dedicated GPU i hope?

>Are you sure its not POSTing and you just simply don't get an image? You connected the monitor to the dedicated GPU i hope?

Yeah I connected it to the GPU, I tried both DVI and HDMI but to no difference.

Neither keyboard nor mouse lights up either on power up, these are connected via USB.

So far I get no warning lights using one particular RAM block, in the rightside slot. If I do anything else, I get blarred down the error LED lights.

Get a set of Black Ripjaws V 2x8 3200. I'm pretty sure that one of those sets is on the QVL of the msi gaming pro carbon, or the PC MATE.
As for the GPU, if your concerned about thermals, Get Gigabyte's Black OC or MSI's Duke OC. Your going to be buying a 4k monitor? or a 1440p 144hz, right? Because using a 1080ti for anything else is useless.

>that RAM
What the fuck are you thinking?
>>
>>62449865
Sorry, I didn't explain why for the RAM. You don't need 32gb. Probably never will. But, a 2x8 kit gives you some room to upgrade.
>>
>>62449771
>because Ryzen is much hotter as far as I know
No? It consumes about the same, and is soldered. Even the fucking stock coolers are fine for it as long as you don't OC to hard, and when OCing you generally hit the clock wall way before temperatures start to limit you. Ryzen CPUs are gleefully easy to cool.

>should I just get one stick of 16gb so I can upgrade in the future?
>should i go for half the bandwidth
no? Just get a board with 4 DIMM slots and upgrade to 4x8 if you ever need more.

>>62449802
that's unfortunate. Nothing but trial and error will solve your problem. But my guess would be a faulty board.
>>
>>62440657
If your cooler is even a little big (if you're wondering if it is then it is), install it after you plug in all the MOBO cables. I had to redo my Noctua because I couldn't get the CPU plug in, ended up fucking my pins and having to rebend them.

>>
>>62449771
>>62449865
>>62449915
Also, this. Ryzen is very cool. If your going for the 1700 / 1600, the stock cooler is damn good. You can get to a CONSERVATIVE 3.5 with a stock cooler. If you want to do heavy overclocking, buy something Noctua. Don't fall for the watercooling meme.

I hate being a brainlet and hearing conflicting information. Is it better to have 2x4gb 3000mhz rather than 1x8gb at 2400mhz? I assume it is, but like I said

>brainlet
>>
>>62450117
With Ryzen 3000MHz or higher is almost required. Dual channel RAM has twice the bandwidth, so you want dual channel. You need 2x(a number) of 3000MHz or higher, and check your motherboard's compatibility list.
>>
>>62450117
Higher clockspeed with similar timings means more useable bandwidth, and most CPUs like that. Two sticks and a CPU/Board that support Dual channel means twice the bandwidth, and CPUs like that very much.
>>
>>62449915
Im gonna try some more tomorrow, I'm absolutely spent for the night, the wiring was kind of a nightmare when you've never done it before.

Installation went okay, it was just the damn wiring that took forever to do.

I just hope it's a mistake on my end and not an actual hardware flaw, I'm not sure how common those are, it seems people are RMA'ing stuff left right and center.

One thing that throws me off is that the Mobo is giving me these warnings, wouldn't that indicate that it's not the mobo? I could be wrong

Yes, all your life.
But still, 8 gb of ram is short, you need at least 16 gb to run things smothly these days
And with ryzen, at least you need 2666, or preferably 3200mhz and 2x8. Again, using only one stick and/or 8 gb these days is kind of short

Hello,
This is my build, my budget is about $1500 CAD as I'm in Canada. I already have an SSD, hard drives and case. I'm just replacing my 5 year old PC. I mostly use it for occasional games (ARMA and some MMORPGs) web browsing and schoolwork. I'm mostly looking at longevity as opposed to just meeting my needs. Any suggestions?

Computer is dying and nobody can tel what it is. Its either psu or mobo or both. As such im building something new.

Going from 4770k to probably 1700 but maybe 1700x. Realize its a sidegrade but the cores should help with certain things I want to learn (namely blender).

My issue is with mobo and ram.
Asus has always treated me well. Is the ch6 worth the premium over the prime series? Never had a rog mobo before and im currently in a house share so wifi is a must.

Ram. As far as I can tell one of the best kits is the flare x as ryzen benefits from faster ram with diminishing returns after ~3200mhz. My issue is between 16 and 32gigs. Id prefer to have 32 but need help weighing the pros and cons and basically figuring out whats actually a reasonable expectation.

Gpu is a 7970 which I could upgrade but I only casually game lately and it seems to be holding up just fine.

Can anyone help me out?

The one on the top left is a 4-pin molex connector to plug to the 4-pin molex plug of your power supply (very few things use those plugs now), you only use that if you can't plug the 3-pin fan header to the motherboard for whatever reason. Remember to only plug either one but not both

So I was here about a week or so ago asking about how to upgrade from my i5 3570k and gtx 670 with the goal of gaming at 1080p on ultra for the next good while. In doing so I was told by you wonderful gentleman that I likely don't need to do the cpu/mobo upgrade that I thought I did and that if I just OC it I should be fine.

Also was told that the 1060 6 gb was likely the best choice for what I'm hoping to achieve. But I have been thinking and with the virtual hundreds of dollars I'll save not needing a new cpu and mobo (and ram since I have ddr3) I was wondering if its worth it to go a little more on the gpu and get the 1070, from what I understand it'll keep 1080p ultra for even longer than the 1060 and if down the line I find myself with even more money or wanting to save up I can further upgrade for 1440p. So yeah just wondering what opinions are, the 130+ dollar price difference isn't nothing to me but if it will give me even more longevity and some options down the road I think it might be worth it. Or should I just go cheaper, get the 1060 for now and reupgrade later if I see the need?

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond guys.

>>62454086
>Isn't the whole point of a SSD to install stuff like games and other resource-intensive applications though?
No. The point of the SSD is to put the operating system on there to speed up overall use, and MAYBE a few frequently used programs on them. HDD for everything else

>>62454105
save both to the HDD.
When you install the game to the SSD, that's also where your save files go so the game knows where to access them.

I'd love to get a 1080 ti, but its just too expensive, I'm also planning on getting a mouse and keyboard and with those I'd basically be spending all the money that I have when I need to save some of it.

I'm only even considering the 1070 because of the money I found out I don't need to spend on the cpu/mobo. If I also needed those the 1060 would be my max.
>>
I usually recommend going with 1 stick of 8gb ram for a budget build, that way you can drop a second 8gb ram in there down the line and get 16gb dual channel with 2 slots left for two more.

Or 1 16gb dimm if you think you'll go 64gb in the future, but if you have the cash 16*2 is good, dual channel, and two more slots for the future.
