----
Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

This is a really specific question but I come to you at my darkest hour.

Does anyone know where I can find an EDID dump for a ThinkPad T450s 1080p screen? I'm specifically looking for dumps from either Lenovo FRU 00HT622 or 04X5916

I have the panel but the idiots who sent it to me flashed the EDID to come generic LG panel, meaning that the Lenovo blacklist doesn't allow me to adjust the screen brightness, and it's on 100% all the time.

I know how to flash it but I need the original Lenovo EDID.

If it's the normal T430, yeah. I don't see the point in going from a dual core i5 to a dual core i7 (which is pretty much just a slightly higher clocked i5), either go quad core i7 or stay with the dual core i5.

Mine did this on Win7 and Win10,

On my Arch install it's quiet as. It'll spin up if I'm streaming something, or browsing very heavy web apps or using an IDE.

I've since removed those Windows versions and replaced it with Win10 LTSB - It's a version of Win10 with a gimped botnet and no forced updates.
No faggy metro apps in it either. Doesn't even have their new browser. It runs very smoothly now. No fan raging on idle. About as quiet as Arch now although it's still more resource intensive.

I am in the market for a new laptop. I understand this thread is obviously biased towards Thinkpads but any brand would work for me.

I need a laptop that can do some heavy computational lifting before I send the working scripts over to our workstations.

Currently looking at the new T or P series. I have no need for a dedicated GPU but high resolution/15" screen would be nice.

As for budget $2,000 is my max.

Lastly, is it smart to just buy the base model then upgrade with aftermarket SSD, more RAM, etc?

The touchpad mod needs specific drivers that only work on Linux, 7 and 8.1, not 10 and w10's windows update autoinstalls the original clickpad driver.
>>
>>62413434

I had the same problem as you with T440s/T450s.

This is going to sound like absolute sacrilege but I took a T440s touchpad and swapped it into a T450s. There's a bit of driver fudgery involved but it worked in the end.
>>
>>62413434
Have you ever acclimatised to the trackpoint? I can't go back man. I had an interview the other week and they gave me a laptop to solve a coding problem on and I kept trying to finger the G&H keys ffs. Felt unnatural to use the trackpad. It was an ok trackpad too.

>>62413482
You can exclude those driver updates by adding exclusions with some powershell commands. It used to try to update my trackpoint drivers to the currentyear drivers. I hated it because even at full sensitivity I feel like I'm gonna develop finger arthritis I have to shove it that hard.
The Win7 drivers are fine though so I keep them and make sure it doesn't touch them

Ah fair enough. Having using friends Mac's before that the touchpad always felt godly as far as they go. Had a very nice texture and resistance on the finger.

As for the config. Best bet is going for those legacy drivers like I said. I think it's 2015 Win7 off the top of my head. There you should set it to be quite sensitive. Leave the windows sensitivity setting in the middle, but ramp it up in the lenovo driver tab. It'll feel a bit jerky at first but it gets really exhausting frankly when it's hard to push.

In general though, windows is never perfect.

On linux though, it took a bit of fucking about but I got something that feels right on the sweet spot for me. The response is also a lot more linear.

You can modify it by changing the value in the fules in pic related. Those are the settings I have them at.

x220 for 150 with 8gb ram, 128ssd and i5. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have IPS screen, should I do it for my first thinkpad lads?
>>
>>62415831
IPS is a meme and takes on average 50% more power to run.

Do it. Also learn to love the terminal if you don't already.
>>
>>62415831
How significant is that 50%? i.e, my T440p with the 1080p IPS pulls about 13w an hour if I'm trying to save battery.
>>
Found a T60 in the trash in pretty good condition. Spent about 30 bucks today buying little upgrades here and there on feebay.

So far.

bought T7400 cpu, t7600 was 15 dollars more!
SSD drive i had laying around
bought 4gb of memory even though only 3gb can be used due to chipset.
bought 9 cell batteries
bought new cmos battery

it has intel gma video and was wondering about installing libreboot but turns out it depends on the panel and that sometimes it wont work and will leave your laptop headless or even bricked, which would then require buying a bus pirate and reflashing it again which is another adventure in itself and an additional 30 dollars in hardware.

should i just not install libreboot? also what distro should i use? this isn't my first time using linux but i really want a throw around laptop and this will be it. I don't want bloated crap. I want something that i can learn on, so it doesn't have to be easy to use.

which distro would that be?

If you're using a ThinkPad, you should dip your toes in Linux. And if you're doing that, you'll need to use the most basic functionality of the terminal. White text on black background, command line interface. Ringing any bells?

kind of but that's more complicated

get a flash drive bigger than 4gb, not sure if anyone even makes them that small anymore you can get USB3.0 32GB drives for like $15

then get iso for windows/linux

then you must put the iso onto the flash drive and make it bootable
use Windows USB/DVD Download Tool to put the Windows iso onto the drive
use unetbootin to put Linux onto the flash drive

after that simply boot laptop off of the flash drive and install the OS onto the SSD

they are still pretty durable but they have a couple extra things that are prone to breaking, mainly the lid position bumpers on the sides of they keyboard like to snap off

then after that happens the palm rest corners will be exposed more often since the lid won't sit perfectly square, so then the palm rest corners get cracked

You will see those two things already broken on a TON of X220t or X230t's.

Open a terminal with
Ctrl + Alt + T

Then type
sudo apt-get update

This should prompt you to use the password you used when you installed Ubuntu. Sudo basically allows an administrator to do things. apt-get(or just apt) is the package manager. Update will refresh the repositories of the software you are looking to install.

Then it will update a few things and ask you if you want to continue with a y/n dialoge. Just press y then hit enter.

Then try doing the software manager.

Paint is no good because then it won't feel like a Thinkpad anymore. To do it right you would need to disassemble the laptop and only plasti dip the parts that can be dipped in a way that looks professional. You might have to sand off the existing finish on some parts.

The keys of the keyboard and maybe some parts of the touchpad like the mouse buttons could be dyed in rit dye to match if you wanted to go the extra mile.

Do you have a picture of that white Thinkpad?

If you even wanted to use a thinkpad tablet for drawing, you're going to have to hunt down an X60 or X61 SXGA+, and they are old as fuck, still serviceable though, but somewhat uncommon. I got an i5 x250 i8gb ram for $375. Is that a decent deal?

Kek, so true. How does this happen even? Are they eating fried chicken and using their laptops at the same time?
>>
>>62421424
It's supposed to be an extra layer of protection for HDDs, it's not necessary if using SSDs.
>>
>>62419294
my gf that is artist use x220 with IPS and she don't have any complains
>>
>>62421450
I use HDD and I am not going for a long time to upgrade to SSD(250gb is 120 euro).

They are expensive and I don't want to spend 70 euro for 128gb SSD.
Do anyone use hdd with linux or everyone already switched to SSD?
>>
What does refurbished even mean on Ebay? Like half the Thinkpads are "refurbished".
>>
>>62421535
dude wat you can get 120gb for 45 eur and 240gb for 77 eur

>>62421564
"it turns on and all the hardware works"
>>
>>62421574
Yes I can get 45 euro ssd like sillicon power, transcend or kingspec but I don't want to get chinked.
>>
>>62421564
Fancy word for saying they cleaned it and maybe changed some of the hardware, like ram or drives and made sure it works.

Refurbished does come across as there was something wrong with it and they fixed but most of the time it's just another word for "used but I gave somewhat more of a shit."
>>
>>62415556
added an scp foundation logo to the booru
>>
>>62421564
It's used and it works. Thats it. The meaning itself can vary greatly between sellers and even items but it all comes down to it's used in some form. One Thinkpad might be "refurbished" in that a guy found a working Thinkpad but it didn't have a power brick so he got one and packaged it all together. Another one might be the CPU died so he replaced it. Another one might literally be a guy returned it after opening and the seller just put it in a new box.

It's a meaningless term pretty much.
>>
Why do thinkpads have such a "culture" surrounding them? The community seems to be one the most active laptop communities, probably only rivalled by MacBooks. And they seem to be one of the few laptops that sell well even used, the other being MacBooks as well.
>>
How I can check battery life from my x230? I want to know how much capacity it has still.
>>
>>62422054
Business grade product. Durable, readily available manuals from manufacturer, easy to service, abundance of parts. IBM/Lenovo were never good at marketting but Apple is and that's what Apple has going for them. It's sickening to see Lenovo shoot themselves in the foot by removing the business grade features of the newer generation Thinkpads in an attempt to "compete" with Apple.
>>
>>62422164
Use HWiNFO64 to see battery information. Lenovo Settings/Battery gauge will also show some info.

Absolute autism mode, I've heard >10h on a 9cell. Reasonable basic use, probably closer to 7-8.

More accurately it's a bit more than double what you get right now.

True, they have some imperfections, but they serve their purpose well enough. Also, if /g/ is still here in 10 years time, I'll be able to use that to show they are from the original run, thus gaining levels of autistic smugness never before seen.

Decided to boot up my win install to rice my BIOS screen. I'm running Win10 LTSB on an X220 here.
I was reading the readme on the BIOS utility and it seems to be for a UEFI BIOS whereas mine is running a legacy BIOS.

Anyone know where/how I can update/acquire the legacy one? I'm still looking around but I haven't found it yet.

would an i7 2760qm upgrade on a nvs4200 model T420 be safe and icy? I'm glad my new T420 came with the discrete card (payed $145, i5 2520m) but it currently gets 50C idle when the card is enabled from the bios.

It says right on the page that's a limited giveaway for Lenovo retail partners.

You're not getting one.
Well not until they're being resold on eBay anyway.

I sense low effort.

This would be fine if they
Use the higher quality chassis materials
Make it easily serviceable

640x480, 30kb max. Download the BIOS utility for your model, follow the instructions in the text file there. Forgot the name, but it's pretty obvious.

I am going to buy a T440 for 250€.
Then upgrade ram to 8gb and the screen to an FHD display (B140HAN01.3).
In total, a T440 with an i5 8gb of ram and a 1080x1920 display. Sound's good?
