Last time a phone had "liveness" detection I tricked it by pointing it to a picture of the person in photoshop and then showing and hiding a layer that had skin color painted over the eyes.

I'm don't doubt it's harder with the ir gimmick but it still doesn't stop anyone from taking your phone and then pointing it at your face.
