Why would anyone buy the iPhone 8?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 122

I'm not even talking about Android users, I mean why would any Apple buyer go with the 8 instead of the X?

Isn't having a status symbol the most important part about owning an iPhone? What bigger status can an Apple user have than owning the company's 10th anniversary edition phone that's basically implied to be 2 generations ahead of the 8?

So who is the 8 marketed towards? Who wants to be that poor scrub in the Apple group who passed on the hottest phone of the decade that's been explicitly presented as superior to the 8 in every way?
>>
No Apple user will buy the iPhone 8. The target demography is Android users who up until now were too poor to afford a new iPhone, so Apple made an affordable new phone for them while consumers with more disposable income can go for the X.
I mean honestly who the fuck will buy the latest Samsung or Sony shit when they're essentially the same price as a recently released iPhone?
>>
>>62404261
>Sony
Literally no one is buying that regardless of price.
>>
>>62404261
They didn't make an affordable iPhone. It's just as expensive as previous ones. They just made one that's even more unaffordable on top.
>inb4 poorfag
No
>>
>>62404328
>It's just as expensive as previous ones
It's the same price as the high end android phones.
>>
>>62404343
yeah, but it's shittier. so what's your argument here?
>>
>>62404343
That's not what I'm contesting. The target demographic being "Android users who up to now were too poor to afford an iPhone" makes no sense since it's literally the same price as before. Making an even more expensive one doesn't magically make the other ones more affordable.
>>
Iphone 8 is better than x. It has a home button, touch id, so no need to align the phone with your face to unlock. I would be even better if it didn't include "wireless" charging
>>
>>62404355
It's not shittier though. Everything from the camera to the screen, battery life is all better on the iphone. The only downside is their GUI which I personally think needs some improvements.
Their main competitor on the android market is Samsung and their last device literally exploded in peoples' pocket. You can't possibly compare the two. At this point the only competition they have is the low end android devices which are targeted at people who can't afford an iphone, The high end of the market though? CORNERED by Apple!
Sorry but not sorry.
>>
>>62404365
I'm pretty sure the 8 is more expensive at release than the 7 was, which makes his argument even more stupid.
>>
>>62404261
>can't afford $20,000 car

>now I suddenly can afford the $20,000 car
????????????????
>>
>>62404387
could you possibly shill any harder?
>>
>>62404217
I don't own an iPhone 6S as a status symbol. I own it because I could get it for cheap (2 free 6S's with a 2 year contract costing me 80/month total), and because it wasn't andoird (tried 4 different androids, one of them a top-of-the-line one, and hated them all). That's like saying Toyota is a status symbol because some people purchase Lexus cars.
>>
>>62404365
I used a poor choice of word. I wasn't talking about all Android users, but the high end ones.
The kind of consumer who buys the latest samsung can now buy the latest standard iphone, while the iphone x moved to the luxury market and is competing with devices like Vertu or the Porsche Design.

It's the SAME price. Why would high-end Android customers now switch to the iPhone 8, if the price has not changed from the iPhones before it? Are you reading what you're typing?
>>
>>62404217
Just recently switched to babby's first Alcatel smartphone from my old dumbphone.

It came with Android Kitkat and I fucking hate it. It's not enough to make me buy Apple shit. But I still have to wonder if Android fans are literally retarded or not. Android is a bad OS any way you look at it.
>>

Someone gave me an iPhone 4 to try out, after I had tried a Casio Commando, a Moto Droid 3, an HTC Rhyme, and an LG Optimus (can't remember the exact model of Optimus), and found all of them so bad that I switched back to a dumbphone for 4 years.

It's amazing how much better the iPhone 4 was compared to those phones, even though some of them came out long after it. The iPhone 4 is the reason I have a smartphone today.

I can't tell you if android has improved, but Gingerbread was so fucking bad, no matter which phone that I used, that I flat out refuse to use Android anymore. The fact that people used that OS, and thought it was acceptable, told me all I needed to know about Android.
>>
>>62404624

>>
>>62404634
Mind if I ask why you got the 7 instead of the 6S? I couldn't see a reason to justify the extra cost (and, in hindsight, I can't see the reason to justify the 6S over the SE unless you really want the bigger screen - 3D Touch just isn't worth it).
>>
>>62404261
>Android users who up until now we're too poor to afford a new iPhone

Nigga that's a bunch of LOL you got there. It wasn't because of the price, it was because iPhone was years behind and severely lacking in innovation. Not only that but you gotta do it the CrApple way.

Android users prefer to be able to do this and that, plus many more that you can't even do on an iPhone unless you jailbreak it, which is stupid to do.
>>
>>62404633
Android was unusable before kitkat. Iphone was never usable. For that reason I sticked with dumbphones until 2014.
>>
>>62404663
what do you use now?
>>
>>62404663
Yeah. I honestly can't believe that people were willing to use Android back in the day. It wasn't even close. In terms of utility, it was literally iPhone>dumb phones>Android. Blackberry was always its own thing (very good if you needed what they offered, pretty expensive if you didn't), so I'm omitting them, because they always filled a niche need extraordinarily well.

My first phone was the G1. I passed on the iPhone because it was so butt ugly and slow. Then I upgraded to several Android phones since then because the iPhone still looked butt ugly.

iOS sucked so hard, I hated the interface and it was almost impossible to click on something to open, while on ANY Android device, I could open anything with ease.

You can go ahead and place the iPhone in the dumbphone category because it has always been one and will continue to be one until Tim Crook gets busted for child pornography.

I'm glad you found something that you like. Personally, I found that the iPhone 4 (released mid 2010) mopped the floor with the Moto Droid 3 (released more than a full year later), which was the flagship phone of Android at the time.

I guess we just have different tastes. Personally, I don't give a shit how the phone looks, only how well it works.
>>
>>62404748
>the G1
What phone is that? There are tons of android phones called the G1. HTC? Geotel? RCA?
>>
>>62404786
iPhone worked fine because of their minimalistic, simple interface that works for kids 7 and under and for old farts.

Are you a kid or an old fart? I'm thinking the latter because you sound like an old fart.

Moto 3 was a failure, not even a flagship phone. It was over hyped and marketed too much. There were other better Android phones that beat the iPhone anyways.

Good question

I was gifted a 6s Plus after the Note7 debacle last year and hate this fucking phone more everyday. Now that it randomly stops charging and the fingerprint sensor doesn't work anymore I'm stuck wondering why the fuck people spend all their money on these """""premium""""" phones. I'll be buying an S8 in the next few days.

>>
>>62404845
I have a 6S, and, even with a lifeproof case on it, my fingerprint sensor still works (of course, I don't use it to actually unlock the phone, only to get into some apps quicker once the phone is unlocked).

There are just so many features and improvements I miss from Samsung phones. The app store is annoying and the thing just feels like a stupid toy and not a premium phone. The S8 looks better than the $1000 iPhone X.
>>
>>62404910
Ok. I'm not interested in defending Apple. I'm of the opinion that people should get what they want if its at a price they are comfortable paying. All I was saying was that my fingerprint sensor still worked, even with a waterproof case over it.
>>
>>62404930
Yeah, I know. Just ranting.

I googled "Touch ID not working" and apparently this is an issue. The fingerprint sensors on iPhones are dogshit to begin with anyway. Any moisture or weird angles and it doesn't work when it worked instantly and perfectly no matter what on my Note 7.
>>
>>62404846
The notch is nice. It lets you orient the phone without opening it.
>>
>>62404930
IPhones are good for dumb narcissists while Android phones are good for intelligent users who use it for function over appearance.

Sounds like you're vain.
>>
>>62404944
Then maybe that's why my sensor still works. Dunno. I won't say that the lifeproof case looks particularly good, but again, I didn't buy an iPhone because I wanted a good looking phone. I wanted a smartphone that "just werkz," and have had horrible experience with Android.

haha, this is what I can't stand the most. People parrot this "iPhone just works" meme but the Note 7 I had was so much more intuitive.

Go type ilililili on your iPhone and try to use your finger to place a cursor in the place you want and see how miserably it fails.

Want to take a screenshot and instantly edit it to show someone something? Can't do that on your iPhone.

Want an app? It's probably free on the Play Store and costs money on the App Store.

Enjoy pressing the screen firmly? Have fun dealing with 3D Touch constantly.

Autocorrect is terrible. No haptic keyboard. No always-on display. No notification lights.

Am I missing something?
>>
This thread made me realise some people are genuinely mentally retarded.

They made the iPhone 8 more expensive than the 7 at launch (because it starts at 64 GB) and some people are perceiving this as if the iPhone 8 is more affordable phone simply because there's an even more outrageously overpriced phone from Apple.

No wonder they're the most profitable company in the world...
>>
>>62405037
>haha, this is what I can't stand the most. People parrot this "iPhone just works" meme but the Note 7 I had was so much more intuitive.
Maybe they should have released that back when I tried 4 separate android phones, and found them all to be shit.

>Go type ilililili on your iPhone and try to use your finger to place a cursor in the place you want and see how miserably it fails.
Didn't have a problem. I literally just held my finger down, and a magnification circle appeared, and let me put the cursor exactly where I wanted it.

>Want to take a screenshot and instantly edit it to show someone something? Can't do that on your iPhone.
Wouldn't know, never tried. I would just email it to myself and use GIMP. But I just tried, pic related.

>Want an app? It's probably free on the Play Store and costs money on the App Store.
That's an awfully vague challenge.

Believe it or not, not everyone has the same wants/needs. I don't care if you don't like the iPhone, and have a phone that you like. I'm not even an Apple fanboy. It just happens to be the only smart phone that I've found bearable. If you don't, then get something you like. That doesn't make me a worse person for not liking what you like, though.
>>
>>62404855
I had the phone for a good while. I actually really liked it while I had it; great keyboard, good camera for its time, it felt extremely durable, and I appreciated the square design (both ergonomically and screen-wise). Battery wasn't the greatest, though, and while it was a great dumbphone, the smartphone wave was rolling in with the iPhone 3G[S], Droid, etc. and, well, Sprint...

The original carousel menu was cool looking at the time and showed off your background, but slow. You could change it back to a classic tile menu which was faster but hid your background.

I actually had the purple variant. Still love the design; paint would chip, though. Overall solid device for the time.

>Ok. I'm glad that it "works better." That doesn't mean that the iPhone isn't working, though.

But that's Apple's selling point. "It just works!"

I haven't used other Android phones but iPhones really don't have anything on the latest Samsung phones in terms of usability.

Once again, it comes down to the fact that you're paying more money for an ultimately inferior product.

Apple fanboys have completely dropped the argument that iPhones are superior phones. They aren't even the most usable phones anymore. Just a stupid meme.

Let's imagine for a moment that there's a scale with only one horizontal axis. Further to the left is security, while further to the right is convenience.
A number code is very far to the left; it's probably the most secure way to lock your phone but gets really annoying to have to punch in those digits any time you want to do anything besides take a photo.
Further to the right is Face ID. Incredibly convenient but also dangerously easy to surpass.
Touch ID would be somewhere in the middle; it's less secure than a pass code but much more convenient. Touch ID can be surpassed, yes, but only with a lot of time and resources and a big chunk of money spent in the process. Someone would have to steal your phone, steal your fingerprint by somehow getting a picture where your fingerprints are clear enough to replicate, then replicate your fingerprints onto a silicone print. Someone would only do that if you were important enough to go through all of that for your information; say, if you were a politician with dirt or a celebrity or something.
Meanwhile, Face ID can be surpassed if, say, I'm talking to someone with my iPhone X sitting on a table between us and they just decide to take my phone, point it at me and swipe up. That's all they have to do to get in. Takes no effort or time or money, really.
Besides, fingerprints are much more reliable anyway; they work in many more environments than facial recognition technologies do. Doesn't matter if your finger is moist or damp, upside down or not, doesn't matter if you're inside or outside, in the dark or in broad sunlight; 'it just werx.' Face ID, despite being better than standard Face Unlock due to the fact that it makes a 3D mapping of your face rather than just taking a picture, still sucks because it wouldn't work 100% of the time like a fingerprint sensor would.

I don't hate bezels enough to sacrifice both security and convenience to get rid of them. I don't think anyone does.

I mean, I totally understand why people hate the iPhone but you just listed some of the most retarded reasons I've ever heard.
Were your parents siblings?

Some people just want an iOS device and don't care about having the latest/greatest device and think the SE is too small I guess.

If you're invested into the Apple ecosystem and want the 5 years of updates, and physical stores that will do repairs and replacements it makes sense. As someone who likes things that last, I run my phones into the ground. My 5 year old Nexus got really slow and unwieldy. My 5 year old iPhone was still pretty fast.

I now have an iPhone 7 that I got an amazing deal on when I bought it outright and plan to use it for the next 4 years.

Personally am an android user, but I think that the hold to accurately select is a neat feature

This is the first time they have had so many models out.

That doesn't make it in any way more affordable. See >>62404403

I had one of those Casios, definitely my favorite phone of all time.

You're some kind of statistical anomaly, everyone's poor on the internet in general. That's because poor people can't afford real life so they have to live it through computer screen.

I've got a 6s and I'm upgrading to an 8 plus

No Touch ID (with current state of face ID at least) means it's a no from me doggo.

>Isn't having a status symbol the most important part about owning an iPhone?

Oh didn't realise this was a troll post

When did the note 8 explode?
>>
I probably would if I need a new iPhone. I like the home button.

Couldn't give two shits about "status" and I try to keep my use of Apple stuff subtle. It's just the comfiest to use, especially if you're in the whole ecosystem.

I'd go with 8 over X for TouchID and to lose that stupid notched display
Hell, I have an SE which cost a third and still value it over the X for TouchID and the lack of stupid notched display.

s8 (on Samsung Store) and iPhone 8 are the same price in France.
So that mean you can get the s8 on Amazon way cheaper than the iPhone 8

I'm not going to lie, the iPhone X is the phone closest to perfection and I've never really been interested in iPhones

I can't afford one right now without a payment plan so I won't get one though, well I don't really need one either but it'd be cool to have one is what I'm saying
>>
Nobody will be buying the 8 and that's the point.

Apple prenteds they offer a choice, but they actually force their fanboys to buy the more expensive X model. It's just typical Apple marketing schemes and tricks.
