Finally looking into getting a VR headset. Is the Oculus Rift currently the best one on the market? Amazon currently has a pretty good sale on it, just wanting to know /g/'s opinion.

Vive is the best that's out in terms of hardware.
But you probably should wait for 2nd gen.

What are you going to be doing with it? Roomscale gaming? Cockpit games? 360 degrees video?

Any idea when the 2nd gen version will be released?

Few games had me interested. Roomscale gaming? I'm not even sure what that is.

No actual evidence, but i'd say in a couple of years tops.
Also you might want to look up what games are available before. If you're a flight/spacesim freak like me this shit is an insta-buy, but otherwise it's a much more nuanced proposition.
There are some really cool things you can do with VR right now, but it might not be worth the money for you yet.

I have a Vive, its amazing with roomscale(you can walk in a predefined area).
But if you can wait, then wait for 2gen.
There are just a handful of good games, most are overpriced walking simulators.
Also porn is super exiting but the free stuff is extremely limited.
Either phone VR or Vive, if you happen to have an empty room.

VR is meme shit
Actually I was looking into getting one after I learned of a public speaking VR app. Have more than a couple presentations this semester and I both suck at and fear public speaking. Seems a bit pricey for this one use, but I'm sure I could play some games and shit too. Totally forgot about VR porn.
Samsung Gear VR is great if you already have the phone. You can pick up the headset and controller for less that £60.
Its all still gimmicky but its a very impressive gimmick

The Vive is absolutely the best. More open, better hardware, better tracking. The Facebook Rift is shit, you have to install their botnet data mining shit, it requires hundreds of USB ports, you have to buy a third camera separately, and even then it still has inferior tracking.
