What was your first language and why did you to learn it?

Quickbasic, because that's what my father had a textbook on.

C++ because when I got into uni I got to choose a minor subject (this is different from the american majors and minors) for 2 semesters out of computer science, medicine, chemistry and electronics. Computer science sounded most interesting/useful (although medicine probably would have been nice as well)
