In my experience, yes. Though I switched to Unity back in the days of KDE 4.x and never looked back. Even during the 'good old days' of 3.5.x it wasn't ever the most stable DE.

If it's as you say, you should see the same issues as you currently do, but this almost certainly won't be the case.

2009 hardware was pretty shit by today's comparision, and fancy DE effects are often done in software, making your CPU the effective bottleneck. I use openbox and XFCE on all my older machines.
