PSA: Don't update Realtek audio driver. R282 is missing the control panel. Stick with R281.
Newly released version "0009-64bit_Win7_Win8_Win81_Win10_R282.exe" is missing the control panel.
Stick with previous version:

i dont use windows but why would i want to use this instead of the native windows mixer if i did?
Too late, sorry

It has a few advantages, also you are able to use built in stereo mix to capture audio. You can't with WIndows' built-in driver. It also has other features, such as system-wide equalizer, an ability to switch between headphones output and line-out on the same jack for laptops, etc..

At least on my machine Realtek drivers are necessary if I want to have sound in my virtual machines on VMware.

The Realtek control panel took 10% of my cpu when it started every time on Windows 10. I had to turn it off every time I booted up
My Linux 4.13.1-gentoo doesn't have this problem
