I've seen a university professor do this

>open browser
>home page is not google
>mindlessly confused
>type "google" into address bar
>this opens a google search for google
>click the first link to google
>now search for the desired website
>it was as easy as desiredwebsite.com
>>
>>62327229
I saw someone...

>type google.com in address bar
>google "google"
>clicks google link
>googles whatever he was googling

It's 2017 and "googling" is still the preferred term for making an internet search / using a search engine
>>
>>62327229
I do this if I'm using duckduckgo and need google for something (eg movie screenings) it's easier than clicking the search bar and typing the same thing.
>>
>>62327697
You can add !g to your ddg search for it to search it on Google. You don't have to go to Google directly
>>
>uses the mouse to select Google's auto-complete results >takes forever to select the relevant search result
>>
>>62327697
here's some advice I received when I was new to /g/: switch to Startpage
>>
Going to duckduckgo and searching for bing
>>
>>62327132
A childhood friend of mine used to do this and it would pissee.off so much. He'd type miniclip.com into google

WHY
>>
>>62327132
>someone presses caps lock
>write a single character
>press caps lock again and continue writing

I've seen countless literal third worlders do that, does anyone know why they do it?

What features does Startpage have that DDG doesn't?
>>
>>62328495
frankly you lose a lot of functionality, especially since the developers removed the ability to get 100 results per page, but aside from bangs, with a little settings customization it does what DDG can do from DDG's search page.

However, it gives better results and has more privacy features. It takes Google's results and anonymizes them, so your searches are private even as far as the URL goes. It also has a dedicated image search page.

is that better?

i just type 4chan into the search bar and if it doesnt autocomplete the .com part then fuck it i use google

When I go to google I just type google in the url bar which google searches google.

it's actually quicker to google then click the full link. some web sites don't even open without typing "www." either. so clicking a result on google negates typing errors.
>>
>>62328696
What kind of shitty browser doesn't auto-complete the URL?
Literally only a problem if you have never visited the site before.
>>
>>62328696
Wait what? Why should?
I can't think of sites that don't work if you don't exactly type http://www.
>>
>>62328716
I have had a few sites display an error when omitting the "www."
>>
>>62328716
www is a subdomain. It has to be configured to direct to your domain if you want it to work both ways.
Often it is configured that way by default.
>>
>>62327831
you have to disable suggestions if you type in url bar and don't use chromium browsers or ie, if not google still knows.

>However, it gives better results
I think I would have to disagree with you there. I don't dislike Startpage, mind you, but, in my experience, DDG has better results. In fact, I would go so far as to say that DDG's search algorithms are in fact easily superior to Google's, not just because of the paranoid argument of those seldom incidents where Google censors a link to Forbes or alleged ``fake news" but because DDG doesn't adulterate search results according to what information they've collected of you. I think that's incredibly valuable--even from a strictly utilitarian stance.

And as for the security aspect of DDG, I really think you should be more wary of projects like Startpage. Not because Startpage has done anything to suggest that they're harvesting data or anything, but you have to understand, when you're using a centralized search engine, you are vulnerable to data harvesting at a fundamental level. There is no way to ensure that Startpage--or any other web search engine like it--whether by their own accord or because of a third party--isn't allowing someone to collect data on you. Only Yacy can do that. And no one uses Yacy.

I know it sounds unintuitive (and eerily Zizekian) but I actually, sincerely hope that DDG is harvesting my personal information. Why? Because, if this were the case, then it proves to me that DDG operates under the precedent that data harvesting is something bad, something antagonize-able and that data harvesting is something to do with discretion. And that's the key word: discretion. Because the alternative is that DDG, like Google, would try to normalize collecting personal information. And in the latter scenario, DDG's misdeeds would inevitably mutate into something more grotesque than simply data harvesting. That's what Google has taught us. And that's why I don't mind the prospect that DDG is secretly compromised by some secret Jewish media conspiracy.
