If you want help:
>Assemble parts list

>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - If you need multithreading
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use, not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM, 3200 MHz is ideal

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

Kinda meh on the early Z370 boards, which are really just rebadged Z270s, kicked out the door early to respond to Ryzen.
The actual new CFL/CNL boards will be Q1 2018, with features like built in 802.11, Bluetooth, SD controllers, etc.

I understand they want CFL out as fast as possible but it makes the lineup a mess.

>Should I just compare how many Ghz a processor can perform?

With Intel in particular it's important to read into the thermals and the bullshit involved in making their chips function properly. With the i7 7700K they mass-produced a series of chips with the cheapest thermal solution they could manage, so the chips run at like 90* and people have been putting the damn things in vices to pop the covers off and apply better thermal solutions.

It isn't all about the hertz.

I don't have many recent AAA titles desu

All games on ultra:
Hand of Fate (setting target fps to 120 gave me 165, other options gave me between 60 and 600)
Crysis 2 (easily 1000+ fps)
Just Cause 2 (don't forget to turn off bullet holes and decals, having them on can crash the game)
Skyrim Legendary edition with high res textures and a few mods (59fps was the lowest I ever went, and it was right after starting the game)
Honey Select (didn't use an fps counter but it ran great)
ADR1FT (iirc I was getting 165fps stable)

On a side note, has anyone ever successfully played EVENT[0] without frame dips? It maxes out all 16 threads and the 1080ti and even when I turn a few settings down it runs at around 80fps with drops. It must be the most unoptimized game ever.

>>62303970
>Should I just compare how many Ghz a processor can perform?
god no, you can't compare performance between CPUs just by numbers or the amount of cores/threads. the only way is to check various benchmarks.

because there are shitloads of factors that have an effect on cpu performance, including the overall architecture which you can't just compare without having an extensive knowledge about cpus in general.
>What kind of benchmarks should I look at?
depends on your usage. since you mentioned running multiple simulations at the same time, you'd probably benefit from cpu with a high amount of cores/threads.

I've set up some PCPP perameters for a 2560x1440p monitor. Based on the results in the following link, what monitor should I consider? Should I pass on all of them? Ideally, I'd like to get a 1440p IPS monitor with >5ms response time and 75 or 90hz, with solid color representation. I'd like to spend >$250, but I have no problem buying used if it's in good condition.

https://pcpartpicker.com/products/monitor/#r=256001600,256001440&T=1,5&H=60,240&B=300,500&p=1&i=50&W=2500,2700&X=0,35552

pop a 771 e5450 in there with a sticker mod. $20
matching 4gb ram kit $10
and the $60 r7 360 of pcpp (in between 1030 and 1050 perf) you could play modern(ish) games on that dino. a 6870 for $30 or less would also do decent at around gt1030 levels but less vram.

You're a faggot.

You're assuming that every build bar the poverty build wants multi threading / mixed usage.

i7 beats 1600 for pure gaming, for instance.

Also:
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

More like 'who the fuck would even want one unless they're mining, at which point you'd want a 500 series card anyway'.

Speaking of which, the 1000 series cards beat those for gaming too.

What even is this list?
>>

Hey guys quick question. I currently have a 1070 ti, and have been looking to upgrade my cpu. I have a big enough power supply but really sont know the best options for an affordable yet amazing cpu. Ive been running an and 8320 for the past like 3 years and 8gb of ram. Already know what I want dor my ram but having a rough time for my cpu. I so lots of multi tasking and emulation so thst is why I first got my 8320 because it was best at the time. I am open to both amd and Intel and also want good performance outside of emulation and multitasking. Pic is of my cat just 'cause.

Fuck it. Let's get a /g/-brand chip fab plant working. We can make our own CPUs and GPUs. ryzen 5 1600 is only €30 more for additional 2c/4t. you simply cannot beat that value
>>
>>62305710
because the 1500X and 1600 are literally the exact same chip except the 1600 has 2 core/4 threads more? That both the 1500x and 1600 cap out at the same clock speed because Ryzen overall OC average is 3.8 to 3.9ghz? Games have already shown to take advantage of more cores lately, so why settle for 4c/8t? If single core is what you're focused on, go buy an i5.

I don't know what happened to OBS, but I can't use AMD's hardware encoding with it *at all*. The recordings just come out with crazy colors and half corrupted.

I can't get it to work on any setup I have. Not on my RX 480, not on my RX 460, not on my RX 550. I have 3 different computers I've tried it with; an i5-7500 build, G4560, and Ryzen 3 1200, and they all do it.

Radeon ReLive works just fine and doesn't kill performance in games, but its functionality is limited to exclusively capturing a full display. OBS on software encoding (CPU only) does work, but it also drops frame rates by a pretty horrific margin.

Really sucks, because OBS is otherwise a great piece of software. I have no idea why this is happening on 3 separate systems with 3 different graphics cards (and I've tried every combination), and apparently I'm the only one it's happened to. I can't find anyone reporting even "kind of" similar issues through google, reddit, or the OBS forums.

Will these setups be able to max out most new vidya at 1080p@60hz?

Also I've been recommended Ryzen 3 1300X, what's the difference between that and Ryzen 5 1600 for gaming?
>>
>>62306754
Maxed? Probably not. GPU seems too slow for that.
You'd probably be too slow even with a 1060. Cranking up x16 AA on a punishing title would need something like a 1070 at least.
>>
>>62306754
If you plan to record games like that dude few posts up, pretty significant.
r3 series is basically discount i5. They don't even have SMT.
>>
>>62306754
It would be able to play most games at normal, or high settings.

>Also I've been recommended Ryzen 3 1300X, what's the difference between that and Ryzen 5 1600 for gaming?
To understand that, we must first look at the Ryzen 7 chips.
Ryzen 7 chips feature 2 4 core Computer complexes (CCX's for a total of 8 cores and 16 threads) All Ryzen chips start life as Ryzen 7's. Then underperforming cores are deactivated and sold at a lower price.
Ryzen 5 1600 and 1600X are 6 core, 12 thread chips with 1 core per CCX disabled>
The Ryzen 5 1500X has 2 cores per CCX disabled.
The Ryzen 5 1400 is a 1500X with half the L3 cache.
And the Ryzen 3 chips are Ryzen 5 1400s with the SMT multi-threading disabled.

So the Ryzen 5 1600 has more CPU horsepower, and is equivalent to Intel's i5 7600K performance-wise.

In terms of price, Ryzen 1600 = i5 7600, but the i5 beats the ryzen, sometimes by a large margin, in almost every benchmark (minus the unrealistic heavily threaded applications).

Read this. Specifically the Dolphin Benchmark: https://www.custompcreview.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-1800x-and-1700x-cpu-review/
Ryzen does very well. The problem I keep seeing when people give advice here is they tend to reference reviews from the first couple months after Ryzens release. Bios updates have smoothed out alot of issues. Plus most reviews were pitting Intels with faster Ram against Ryzens with much slower Ram (another Bios issue at release time). I hate AMD for not taking their time to insure things went smoothly from the start.

I've dicked around with fan curves and pushed it here and there a little but I mostly just play CSGO or some FotM bullshit with friends and it performs perfectly at 1080/ultra on pretty much everything I've touched except Deus Ex MD on release. One day I'll pick up a 1440 144 1ms monitor that will allow me to justify Volta's 1080 equivalent.

tbqh, the only reason I moved from 780 to 980Ti is because I bought a 110Hz 1440p monitor, so maybe looking back it's somewhat justifed. These days though it just seems like anything will run almost anything. I threw my old 980Ti in my dad's PC and it runs Project Cars on his 4K TV on all ultra like a champ. It's really pissing me off the amount of people I see posting 'I-IS A 1060 ENOUGH FOR 1080P?', like, yes you fucking clown. A 1060 is barely 5% slower than a 980Ti, what planet are you living on?

yes, it's true. Microsoft will give you the program to make a windows 10 USB installer on their website for free. The USB drive you use needs to be 4GB or greater. You can choose whether to installe home or Pro while installing it. When it gets to the product key part, just click "I don't have a product key" and continue.
It'll still install it legit, and you can activate it later by buying a license via the windows store or off a website like Kinguin.
Here. These should help you

One is like $300 and the other is like $10 on the grey market.

Are you sure Kinguin keys are legal licenses?
>>
>>62312515
They have a money back guarantee
Microsoft is used all over the world. What, you think third world countries can afford a windows license for the same price? fuck no. Kinguin has international buyers who buy legit windows keys in bulk for their country, then sell the keys online. Though they're cheap, make no mistake, there is profit in it for them. Microsoft just price gouges the American market,

depends on what you mean by budget.
The 2 most popular cases period are the NZXT S340 and the Phanteks P400S
I personally and going for a Zalman Z9 Neo since it has the same features as the other 2 for a similar price, but has space for actual optical drives, and is available in white.

All 3 of those are around the $70-$80 mark.

The cheapest I would go is $40-50 with the Corsair Carbide series and the Cooler Master Masterbox Lite case.

>white case
>at least 1 5.25" drive bay
>PSU shroud
>mounts that show off SSDs rather than hide them
>at least 2 3.5" HDD mounts, preferably hidden
>decent cable management
The S340 hit all but one. Same for the Phanteks. Otherwise I would go with them, but the Zalman is the only case I like the look of to hit everything I want. There's even rubber grommets and 5 (shit) included fans.
>>
>>62312674

just get an external one

It isn't. Some weeks ago I switched from a cheapo mobo to an ITX one, and while doing that, I binned 2 pins and then discovered one that was binned since forever. Then, after getting bootloops I had to went back, so with a needle and some time, I unbinned them and it just werks again. Actually, it should be working 0,087% better, as it now has 1150 pins working!

I don't think it werks like that, but maybe it does.

Also, don't bin them too much, because they are thin as fuck, so if you touch/move/bin them too much, they will fall off and RIP.

My computer tech buddy says the problem with Ryzen's is that you need to get them as part of a package, which limits you if you ever were to want to go non-AMD.

He also says that many of his friends have sworn off AMD due to them having major problems.

Why are they endlessly wanked here?
>>
>>62314058

>>62313895
for content creation you'll definitely want ryzen over intel, at least for the price. As it stands now too AMD is the content creation king with the 1950x, as well as the 1700 and 1600 for their respective price ranges.
I would still go wwith a 1200 and cheap b350 over any 8 core fx and 970 motherboard. I've used both, and the difference is night and day, the little 1200 keeps up with the 8370 in productivity, and in gaming it kills it. just take the time to sell the parts and you can upgrade from the 6300/970 to a 1200/b350 for probably like 50 bucks

Purpose is mostly just gaming and VR, with a plan to pop a watercooled Ryzen 2 in there if they really do turn out being the new sandy bridge - so perhaps it would make sense to notch it down to an R5 1600 for now?

How's the Sea Hawk. It seems like good cooling is a lot more important than anything else to prevent GPU throttling these days so I fancy the idea of an AIO hybrid cooler.

Are 850 EVOs still the allrounder meme SSDs?
What hard drive manufacturer is the least worst these days? I popped in the first random 3tb one I saw so it's replaceable

stay away from gigabyte mobos. you probably don't need an x370 mobo, but if you really want one then x370 taichi is a good choice.
