Also, I know this will sound retarded but learning how to properly use regex with grep will be extremly useful while parsing logs.

Best I could find, if we don't end up in irc, is movim.eu
It has an oss client, uses xmpp, can give you administrative right on your group, can search your history and I am trying to learn more about this shit, e.g. privacy security e.t.c.
