Mine isn't. Mostly because I'm scared I'm going to fuck it up, it'll make transferring backups to and from my device harder, or other such things

It does. Decrypting/encrypting data to read and write takes more power than just reading/writing the data

I do with a text password. It doesn't offer you an alternative for the lock screen which sucks.

Ive had my note5 encrypted since day one 2 years ago. I've updated it through to android 7.0 without any fuck ups or something that would require me to disable it.

It slows down the phone, increases usage and makes it difficult or impossible to retrieve data in the event of the phone's OS borking
