Why are these things so expensive? Do an ebay search for Sun workstations and they're all like this

Is there that much demand from collectors or are they still used in industry?

Does it just need SunOS/Solaris or is there something special about the hardware that makes it unreplaceable? I would think you could just run SunOS in a VM
