I want to get a t420. How's the i7 with Nvidia compared to i5? I want to do some light gaming on it, emulating some ps2 games if possible so I'm thinking i7 with Nvidia. Also that one is the only I can find with 1600x900 screen out of the box.

This. Get the X220t if it's not too much more.

In either case, if you're buying used, try and find an unopened new keyboard, it's a piece of piss to change and really makes typing a joy if there's any sign of wear on the existing one.

I need a ThinkPad for computer science college which is starting soon and I've been looking around like a mad man.

At first I saw this Yoga S1 with an i7 4500U and thought it looked like a good deal, about $650 (swiss francs tho, so it's more expensive) which used to be a showcasing model, so it shouldn't be used much, but it has a 1080p IPS display which is important to me.

Then I looked at more products and narrowed it down to x230-x240 and t430-t440, however none of these come with an IPS and I've read the xx30 has shit displays, while xx40 has shit clickpads.

The Yoga is generally not in the guide in the OP so I'm assuming there's something bad about it, can anyone give me their opinion here?

>>
>>62267667
It's limited to SATAII speed so there's no need to break the bank.
>>
>>62267628
The thing is, a t440/x440 is around $550-$600 with 250gb SSD / 8GB RAM with shittier screens.

The S1 Yoga is just a little more expensive but offers better specs, however I don't know anything about its keyboard or other issues it could have.
>>
>>62267695
yeah i just saw it, thank you anon
>>
>>62267734
I don't have personal experience but I believe the Yoga is a fair bit tougher to service than the standard Thinkpads. I am however, utterly convinced that anything past the change to chiclet keyboards is trash.
>>

>>

Literally nothing to back that claim, it's just hoping and praying someone outside of the current libreboot team comes up with a hardware modification to make it possible.

I just got a new alienware screen for my t430, but I have the wrong LVDS cable. However I have an old dell inspiron that has a lvds cable that is the right length. I know that the pinout for lvds varies by laptop/manufacturer. Is there any site that shows the pinouts for different makes of lvds cables, or is this a non-issue because there is no crossover?
>>
>>62268054
Then you have to judge for yourself how big screen you need. Otherwise if you are gonna carry it around much I would probably recommend something X220 sized, as I feel my T420 is a bit big(or maybe I'm just weak). For home use a T420 might be better since you get a bigger screen.

>>
any recommended thinkpads out there that can compete with a SP4?
>>
>>62268707
Any, from what I've read.

Anyway, my X220 runs great. Refurb'd, 240$ (ish, it was 6500CZK)
>>
>>62268532
no, both of those use the same processors however the X's one is soldered while the T's is not
>>
>>62268432
oh you can only swap 430?
>>
>>62268707
AND as a P.S.: from what I've seen, the SP4 is not really that modular. If shit breaks, you can't replace it easily. I bought the X220 because spare parts are plentiful and I can replace every single individual thing.
>>
>>62264488
do refurbishers use good HDDs btw?
all they say is the storage space.
wondering if I should buy the cheapest and swap it out.
>>
>>62266463

>>
>>62268740
Not him, but I'm about to pull the trigger on a refurb X220 for $220 with i5 2.5 ghz and 320 gb hdd and 4 gb ram.

Or, there's a X230 for $280 with 8 i5 2.6 ghz 320 gb hdd and 8 gb of ram.

I'm mainly just looking for something to learn Mint on, write papers for school, research/browse the internet, and haul around with me. Are either of these a good purchase?
>>
>>62266463
can you really emulate PS2 on this?
>>
>>62268865
They only replace broken parts. If the HDD in the laptop they buy is not broken, they don't replace it. If it's broken, it depends if the refurbisher is a cheap kike.
My trusted seller uses Toshiba but I've never used an HDD for long. SSD is life.
>>
>>62268895
cheapest 420/430 you can find + aftermarket quad core i7 upgrade
>>
>>62268908
LOL, same workflow here. I translate and write papers for school on the X220. 4GB of RAM is enough IMO, but I've got 8 in it.

I have actually persuaded my boss to buy a refurb'd X230 and he liked it the day he bought it. Personally, I like the X220, but it's mostly bias.

Also, 60$ for 4GB ram difference is a lot.
>>
>>62268932
I'd say you can't. This is from experience with my desktop (i5 4690k, Radeon 6870)

I know the GPU is old but compared to the dGPU in the T420 it's a beast. My PC can't emulate PS2 though. It's pretty demanding.
>>
>>62268740
>>62268857
alright.
I like to use my device in bed though..(hence me using the fanless M3)
Im afraid of it dieing from dust and heat, this way.
Or should I just open it and clean it up regularly?
A modular SP would be nice..
>>
Is it possible to remove the cd drive from T400 and T500 and replace it with some sort of placeholder?
The purpose is to reduce its weight since I will most likely never use the cd dirve.
>>
>>62268957
>Is that really the only difference between the two is the ram and the keyboard? Because that doesn't seem worth it because I can always put 4 more gb of ram in the 220. I'm just trying to understand the difference on both before ordering.
>>
>>62268957
>>62269006
didn't mean to greentext that
>>
>>62268984
Well, I use my X220 in bed, but I put it on my legs, usually, with the side fan slots resting a little away. It is, however, built so that it goes

>in through the back
>in through the bottom
>out through the left

This way, you can put it in your lap and still have a little space for venting.

>>62269018
>Don't worry about greentexting stuff that's not supposed to be green, doesn't matter, buddeh :^)
>>
>>62268908
Though I think the extra RAM might be worth it, I'd say the x220 would be the better buy. I'm biased towards the older keyboard though. It has a dedicated volume buttons, large ESC and DEL keys, you can use the function key to control audio(play/pause/stop etc.). Honestly for that, even if the typing experience MIGHT be better on the newer keyboard, the x220 wins out. Of course you can swap out the x230 keyboard for the older one but that's just extra money to do that on top of paying for the extra RAM. Then again, if money isn't that much of a concern, getting the extra RAM is worth it. Older RAM isn't really depreciating in value like hard drives are. A new keyboard isn't really all that expensive. It just depends on how much you want to spend.
>>
>>62269006
Also, I've spent a few MINUTES with the keyboard, but it seemed almost as good.

As >>62269050 said: the X220 keyboard is better just because.
>>
is the x201 an ok thinkpad?
>>
>>62269050
>>62269057
Thanks, I'm not a huge fan of the chiclet keys, but I suspect they'll be quieter when taking notes in class. So I suppose I'll mull that over. The 220 and upgrading ram doesn't sound like a bad option for the time being though.

It depends on your writing style. I hear myself now a little on my regular keys, but it's really minor. If you hammer away, it will still be quite comfy to listen to. I wouldn't worry about it, Anon.

>>
>>62269882
I haven't owned one but I've used a friend's X40 occasionally and I can tell you, they're among the best. They're Pentium CPUs with up to 1.6GHz an RAM is limited to 2GB so you're gonna have to make sure to use Windows 2000 (XP doesn't feel great on them) or a lightweight Linux Distro.
Aside from performance, if I ever had to kill someone I'd probably beat them to death with an X40/X41. That's how solid they are. I could just hit them on the head a few times, then sit on their corpse and post OC on /b/.

I own a T420, and I've had it for a couple years now, but I think I'd like to get another thinkpad with a 4:3 AR now (or any other "boxy" AR, I'm not sure what options they offered throughout).

Forgot to mention:

The X4x models use a 1.8" IDE hard drive. These things are a bit hard to find and not exactly reliable. There's an SSD adapter and I think a CompactFlash Card can also be used in place of the HDD. Both options require a modified BIOS though.
Just in case you ever consider buying one.

Only if you can write code that is highly optimised for your computer, which should be easy since you have all the specs already. Console games always ran better than PC games(up to a point) because they could optimise their code for very specific hardware.

depends on budget, X230 is ~$250 while carbonide is still really damn expensive and ultrabook bullshit, X230 can hold the classic keyboard and has better build quality, carbonide is light as heck but also weaker (ultralow voltage CPUs), just go X230

1. lenovo.ca for unused new batteries.
2. 4338 and similar docks support it. Basically any from the XX10 to XX30 series that isn't the X220 ultrabase.
3. MAAD boot times and some restrictions go away. You can fix most of a the regular restrictions with a normal modded bios.

Keep in mind the quad core roasts batteries, even with an iGPU and moderate throttling. You pretty much have to get a new 9cell just to deliver the amperage happily. I have one in my old T420 and is can't really take being unplugged. (pic related)

Not really, i ran my T420 with a 2720QM for like a year without battery life issues compared to my previous 2520M. The is a battery hit indeed but it only becomes noticeable when the processor runs at high loads and the difference in 35W TDP against the 45W quad core kicks in, for light casual usage both deliver almost the same battery life. I use Win7 instead of Linux though so maybe there's a variable i don't know about.

You're looking for a workstation.
They used to be called W series but they renamed them to P. 5 is for 15 inch, 7 is for 17 inch.

Examples are W500, W700, W510, W710 etc. When they renamed them to P they switched to two digit naming, so current gen workstations are called P50 and P70.

I'd say you could use a W530. There's a 1920x1080 screen option with 95% Adobe RGB.

The screens of the 15 inch models can also be used on T series models from the same generation, so
a W500 screen can be used on a T500, W530 on T530. With a T series you get less power but more battery life and a thinner and lighter machine.

>>
>>62271998

>>
>>62272891
Since they renamed the workstation models to P series they introduced 3840x2160 screens on both 15 inch and 17 inch models. These are expensive though and most people in /tpg/ want used, cheap, rock solid laptops.
>>

Not really. A Macbook is no workstation. The P series supports 2 SATA drives and 1 PCIe SSD, up to 64GB RAM in 4 slots and NVIDIA Quadro.

>>62272976
They're still better than most other laptops on the market. Just not as good as they used to be. As for more soldered components, that's true. You can still swap the RAM on almost all models (some have soldered RAM plus one RAM socket) and CPU on higher end models. HDD, Wifi card and PCIe SSD can be swapped on all models.
>>

Nobody cares about the touchpad itself, it's always been mediocre at best. The problem is that the --40s also have no trackpoint buttons and you have to use the trackpad for that too. It's absolute fucking cancer and there's a good reason they immediately reverted it the next generation.

I am having a hell of a time finding a good ssh laptop for cheap. My dream laptop would be something that is 1080p, has the chiclet keyboard, TrackPoint (bonus points if it doesn't even have a touch pad.), and about the size of a 2006 Macbook (see pic).

So far the x200/x220 seem okay but they don't have a 1080 screen. I am even thinking about a X131e but again not 1080p and comes with other issues.

Budget: At the end of the day I'd probably spend any amount of money for something that comfy but ideally less than $300 and the cheaper the better.

Location: Burgerland

Size: Something portable that I likened to an old Macbook before they did that whole "you can fit in an a envelope nonsense".

Performance: Enough to run my sick debian/arch i3 rice, program in Vim, and ssh into stuff.

Other requirements: A good battery life would be nice.

X201s is preferable if you can find one, as it both performs better and is guaranteed to have the higher-resolution screen while the X200s has 1280x800 configurations, but it's one of the rarer Thinkpads and even if you do find one it may not be for any reasonable price.

Hello, I've been thinking about getting a ThinkPad (or another used business-class machine) for a while, but I'm not from the USA and don't have much choice unless I import something and get fucked by the taxes.

I've found a used PC retailer near me and they're selling a ThinkPad T510 (i5-520M version) for 230 USD with a 12 month warranty. Is that a good deal?

Also, other than a locked BIOS, missing power adapter, etc, are there any specific things to look out for when buying this model used?

Right. That's why I said it would not only not physically fit, but it would be clocked as a ~1.6 if it did fit.
The 2.0 GHz C2D that was in the T60 was the T7200
>>
>>62275770
T520 is a good choice too if you're fine with 15" laptops, it can use a good FHD display.
>>
>>62274978
Not bad, if not just for the wang10 install, ssd and ram. The s model does have slight heat management issues but nothing a cooling pad wont fix
>>
>>62275737
What in the everloving fuck did you buy, nigger

>Probably just a special-order configuration for whatever goddamn reason
>>
>>62275885
Could be. I'm hoping for some kind of weird T60 / T61 hybrid. Maybe a factory mobo swap.
>>
>>62275748
I don't remember that being an issue, for me it was the horrible palm rejection that barely worked and annoying not so rare misclicks like triggering a middle click when i did a left click since the touchpad is just a giant button.
>>
>>62275804
Looks nice, but this shop doesn't have it. The only ThinkPads with a newer CPU are a T430 and a T530 (and they're pricier as well).
>>
>>62274858
Not gonna lie, 13" laptops in 1080p are rare to find, let alone for cheap. Get yourself a somewhat larger laptop (a W520 will run you around $400 and has a 15" 1080p display)
>>
>>62264488
Hey folks, I'm in a bit of a trouble
My profession centres around image processing and artificial intelligence
And i really want a good thinkpad for the job my old man uses a t60 and it made me want to buy a thinkpad
The thing is , i never used a 14' laptop and i currently thinking of buying a t470p (because of the 4 core cpu)
Any help?
>>
>>62275920
That's what I was thinking, a factory special-order T60 with T61 chips in it.

Remember that especially in the age it was made laptops were usually bought in lots of multiple (20-100) by businesses like fleet vehicles.
>>
>>62275921
Damn it really is bad then. Well I gave thinkpads a try.
>>
>>62276014
Go for a P50 or if you can deal with an older machine, a W520/530. A 15" laptop gives you that little bit of extra real estate and a 14" is a little cramped to me.
>>
>>62276024
Yeah, I'll just wait and see. I'll keep /tpg/ updated in case anybody cares
>>
>>62276026
You could do this mod >>62275147 to eliminate that issue though, i did it and it's all you need to make the *40 series great again.

>>62276014
Why not just an old model with a quad core processor to save some cash?

also you can get USB3.0 express cards for most thinkpads from that era.

Gonna use it for programming and work.
Refurbished for 149 CAD.

Am I in for a good ride?

Not a great ThinkPad but a decent laptop. A good deal for 150 Canuck Pesos
>>
>>62276082
eh, it has absolutely nothing going for it over the X220. The X220 is about the same weight/dimensions but it has a better screen, processor, gpu, battery, and keyboard.

I think you can core boot them pretty easily for a jaunty little netbook. Not bad for that price.

Lurk kijiji moar tho.
>>
>>62276046
Yeah , I'm using a crappy hp 15' laptop so its fine
What bothers me is the weight and the number pad
I really wise there was a p50 in a 14' form factor
>>62276070
I'm going with the idea of a fresh new pad that will last longer than an oldie (i know it sounds dumb because even a t60 is still serviceable)
>>
>>62276100
Yep
Saw that one too. Shit sucks. It's literally my dream laptop
>>
what is the ideal laptop screen size?
>>
>>62267267
How the fuck do you go about finding a decent replacement keyboard for an xx20? All I can find seem to be chinkshit replacements.
>>
>>62276129
It was mostly the price that sealed the deal, plus how expendable it is.
I wanted to buy an authentic older IBM thinkpad, but didn't want to subject it to constant usage, like I will be with this one.

Primarily bought for sturdy build structure, which will come in handy for carrying around at work.
Already have a powerful desktop, so it wasn't really the specs I was going after, but I'll make sure to take a look at the X220 too.
>>
>>62268707
I literally swapped from a Surface Pro 4 to an i7 T420. Best decision I've ever made.

>>
Can't seem to find any info and I don't know where to look. I want to mod my x220 to remove the trackpad. Sure I could just disable it but wheres the fun in that. The last model I know that didn't have a trackpad was an x201.
So my question is can I take the MB of a x220 and FHD 1080p mod and stick it in the chassis of an x201 and where should I look to find out more on this?
>>
>>62276156
between 12 and 14 inch imo

aaa what is going on, suddenly I noticed my T420 feels really warm and sure enough it's burning up. I hear the fan spinning at a leisurely pace so it hasn't given out, CPU usage isn't unreasonably high either
>>
Best way to clean a Thinkpad? I just got a T420 and it's a little dusty and has fingerprints all over it.
>>
>>62276367

So I just got a X220 Tablet for 150.000CLP (normal price around here is about 300.000CLP) I checked everything and it's working, but I'm still suspicious. What should I check to know it won't blow up on me? (temps are normal).

Also when I close the lid on "normal" mode the peripherals won't turn off and I open the lid to see a lot of unwanted actions took place. Is there a way to disable the keyboard/mouse when closing the lid *without* putting it to sleep?

housefire cards. Tried like 7 so far and they all get really hot when transferring data. also drain battery quick
>>
In terms of overall footprint, the X1 Carbon isn't that much bigger than the X230 right?

Sick of this fukkn screen resolution.
>>
Advice please for a direction to start looking. My needs are simple. A 15inch or bigger screen, and to watch videos. No gaming, as I'm a boring man. But I will be editing videos on it. I was looking at the t520. Am I at least on the right track or am I way off base?
>>
>>62276428
>normal price around here is about 300.000CLP
Where the hell are you buying from?

Yes, ThinkPads over here are more expensive but not that much. There's even a T430 for 50k right now.
>>
>>62276729
Yeah I would say t510 or t520 is a good match

W or T5* should suffice.

If T5* make sure it has a quad core processor or buy the processor separately and upgrade it yourself. Same with the 1080p screen.

Niggers deserve to die for making almost all the previous generation m2 parts fucking 2242. Similarly the lack of dual 80mm m2 drives keeps me from any new thinkpad. Hoping for a more fleshed out raven-ridge t440p someday, dual 2.5 drives and dual m2
>>
>>62276947
I have the same laptop, used it for my college days.

Its a pretty solid thing. Kinda THICC as well compared to other business laptops. Also like the fact that its easy to access most of its internal components with its removal bottom by just flicking a switch.

I recently obtained a T420 and its let me down more than the HP laptop.
>>
>>62277855
you can shove an msata ssd into a 440p m2 slot with some whiskey, tape, an adapter and brute force as i did here >>62253773, it werks somehow

it'll get stuck and won't come off ever again though
>>
