Well going on the higher tier of justifiable paranoia thing, when you get more access to higher tier information and/or influence. Home made traps like his are a basic requirement.

Though one of the most basic requirements is also that one has a very high kill ratio with your traps. If a common, or even above average law enforcement thing managed to disable your traps, then you failed. The basic part also includes covert traps that can be hidden for visitors (think of an activated, maybe even remotely controlled, high yield explosive hidden in a ceiling + a sensor). The low tech things like a light bulb filled with kerosine. Electrical doorknobs. If you wanna go for the extra mile you hide some chemical warfare in the walls as well, which is obviously much more silent. To choke everyone to death as well.

But if you can, one of the best solutions would be a claymore type door which blasts huge amounts of shrapnel if they try to breach your apartment. Would take a lot of welding and trying to make such a thing but it would seem like a really basic thing to do.

The aim obviously is as many dead cops as you can get to.
