There's at least a couple of different issues going on. In the blog he states the use of browsing data and web participation as a platform for targeted propaganda. I think we might just be seeing this played out in the idealistic furvor on full display in /pol/.

I think it's best to avoid data collection and participation in things that collect your data and interest and try to disguise your indentity as much as possible with the intent of not being subject to manipulation. Don't underestimate the influence of psychological manipulation.

If you (for example) hate someone you don't even know, consider who benefits from that. The one that benefits may have had a hand in that.

Not him, but you're already aware of all the evidence. Why do you even ask for it? Are you hoping that the person you're challenging won't be able to produce any? What would it accomplish if you were right and they couldn't? It doesn't change reality.

In this specific case it's even worse, as a simple "chromium privacy issues" search is all it takes to completely shut down any further discussion.

My keyboard navigator is a little sluggish though, there is a long pause before you get to access a link and sometimes it doesn't generate patterns for links if there are too many on screen.
I wish there was a faster way to access links using nothing but keyboard yet still retain typical mouse behaviour.

>firefox de-botnetted
Buzzwords and memes aside, what sort of data collection should I be concerned about when it comes to browsers in general? and how do detect bad practices?

I have been skimming through Mozilla privacy policy the only parts I found concerning were the following:
>When we believe it is necessary to prevent harm to you or someone else. We will only share your information in this way if we have a good faith belief that it is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of you, our other users, Mozilla or the public.
>If our organisational structure or status changes (if we undergo a restructuring, are acquired, or go bankrupt) we may pass your information to a successor or affiliate.
The first point sounds quite concerning, it is very open ended.

This point is a given regardless of any company's policy, so it doesn't concern me on its own
>When the law requires it. We follow the law whenever we receive requests about you from a government or related to a lawsuit
Company ethics and all aside, if the law is absolute and requires that my data be handed over then it would be in my best interest to minimise the amount of personal data collected but it is not my greatest concern.

What I would be mostly concerned about is a combination of personally identifying information matched with sensitive browsing behaviour (sites visited, search terms, etc...) being accessible by a single entity.
I have looked through Firefox Browser Privacy Notice
>https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/firefox/
assuming I am not using the nightly build, most data collection services such as health report and what have you are disabled, and google is not my default search engine I do not spot anything immediately obvious that is particularly threatening.

Can someone post that nice info graphic about getting off from Google?

>Buzzwords and memes aside, what sort of data collection should I be concerned about when it comes to browsers in general? and how do detect bad practices?
Anything that phones home, no matter the reason, is bad unless it's opt-in. Furthermore, the most dangerous threat you have regarding privacy is cookies, LSOs, and scripts that can be found on multiple websites. Shit like Self-Destructing Cookies, BetterPrivacy, NoScript (full-fledged, not NoScript Lite), Flash Control, and an Agent Spoofer can help limit the damage of all of these things. So can a VPN (and it doesn't even have to be one that is all that private - so long as the VPN is hosted in a country outside of US jurisdiction, like Hong Kong).

>The first point sounds quite concerning, it is very open ended.
Indeed, especially when you consider what some people constitute as "harm" (remember that fart rape is a thing, as is man-spreading).

>Company ethics and all aside, if the law is absolute and requires that my data be handed over then it would be in my best interest to minimise the amount of personal data collected but it is not my greatest concern.
Agreed.

Google not being your default search engine is only the first step. Keep in mind that a huge number of websites have google scripts that will automatically load by default. Hell, disabling the google scripts here necessitates the purchase of a Pass.

Vivaldi won't let me use Tab for keyboard shortcuts. All I want is normal tab switching shortcuts such as Shift+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab. Other programs I use has those for their shortcuts and I can't change it on them. Gay.

Your 4chan post history is already logged by google via recaptcha. The more google services you use, the more likely your posts can be linked to your IRL identity.

Also keep in mind that this data isn't going away any time soon. In 10-20 years, a bunch of people who went through a /pol/ phase as teenagers could be outed as racist, or somebody who questioned their sexuality on /lgbt/ could be outed as gay/bi when they're in their forties and working on a Qatari gas pipeline. And so on. Honestly, there's a near-infinite number of ways giving up privacy now could screw you over in the future.

TLDR yes, you're being retarded, now stop it.

How powerful are google? Is this them consolidating their power, or a desperate move to maintain position? I hear amazon and adblock are both chipping away at their profitability, and this seems like an unnecessarily drastic move.

Google killed opera with their proprietary html5 extensions. There I said it. The blame isn't on google only, but on the retarded webdevs who can't use standards.
>>
Which one was GNU's browser again? I remember wanting to try firefox and just adding on privacy and freedom respecting features, but they seem to be having drama with all the webextensions chaos. I want to try a browser with full on freedom.
>>
>>62258585
All changed made by Vivaldi are.
Proprietary licensed meaning they can't be modified, and or redistributed.

It's basically the same license as Adobe Flash.
>>
>>62266427
WebExt are by design more freedom.
They are a protocol which was adopted by multiple browsers.

Opera/Chrome/Firefox, and in the future others.

It allows more devs on projects with less funding which are portable between OS and browser.

Obviously the end user gets the best benefits with more freedom of choice without as much sacrifice.

>Disabled Encrypted Media Extensions (EME)
Already disabled by default in Firefox. Firefox without EME can be downloaded from the official Mozilla page. EME in Firefox runs in a sandbox so there's literally nothing running unless the page requests it.
>Disabled Web Runtime (deprecated as of 2015)
Just remove this point as it is no longer included in FF anyway. Not that it matters, Web Rutime was just an Electron alternative; so it did absolutely nothing if a webapp wasn't running.
>Removed Pocket
They removed a bookmark? How brave! I'm sure that 0.5 KB of "bloat" will make it faster.
>Removed Telemetry
>Removed data collection
>Removed startup profiling
Just turn off your connection when first run, disable them in Settings and turn your connection on again if you're so anal about this.
Not that it matters, since most distributions disable this by default.
>Allow running of all 64-Bit NPAPI plugins
Who wants to run Flash or Java?
>Allow running of unsigned extensions
Enjoy your malware.
>Removal of Sponsored Tiles on New Tab Page
Just browse for five minutes. Sponsored Tabs are no longer there. If you use Firefox Sync you won't ever see them.
>Addition of Duplicate Tab option
Middle click on the Reload button.

So it's yet another fork that removes everything new because "waah, waah, old is better ;-;".

We all are.
It was so fast and over night that google has monopoly over everything and its beginning was a straight up government sponsored spy tool.
They control the internet traffic now.
