Probably not seeing as embedded project can run quite long.
Unlike web projects where you can do a homepage for this guy, or a small web shop for that guy, in embedded, people want to have everyone working on it to keep working on it for a long time.

Embedded projects usually also take way longer than web projects or even normal software projects so freelancing could run into issues there as companies will rather hire you for lower pay, than implement you for way higher fees.

We have a few freelance embedded systems developers at my company. The good ones are hard to come by.
