Drivers are usually done by following instructions from the manufacturer.
It can be a difficult thing if the manufacturer doesn't tell you how it works, but overall it just takes time.

That's an abstract question but you're demanding a concrete answer. The real answer is "anything nontrivial which is easily extended and maintained by others", but that doesn't really fit your criteria. Really any project which solves a real world problem cou count. Again though, you've written the original C compiler and still be a shit developer if it took hours to compile anything and nobody could understand a bit of the code. Quality is difficult to describe though. We've long fretted over how we could define the quality without a name that exists in good software. We really still don't know hhow to describe it.

Driver writing is like going through a minefield with a map drawn hastily on a napkin. It's an exercise in being psychic about the hardware's potential failure modes.

This
An emulator for a non-trivial architecture
A complex and robust file format for images, sounds or videos
A bidirectional path tracing engine
A compiler or interpreter for a complex language (so brainfuck doesn't count)
