>M to U

Not much. Remember, you're effectively dropping down a performance tier there as well.

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-7200U-vs-Intel-Core-i5-2520M/m153577vsm29

And obviously, a throttling 7200U would lose to a cooled 2520M. That kills a lot of modern chips.

>>62222649
The biggest issue you'll notice is lack of support for some instruction sets/hardware encoding. Not a big deal for now, but you might not have inbuilt support for the next meme video format and it'll be harder on your CPU.

Biggest difference by far is the iGPU.

Reposting from last thread!

My W500 came yesterday, was listed as "Parts or not working" because it was BIOS locked. I installed Libreboot, and a T9600 and she's one bad machine! Loving that resolution compared to my X200, and the thing looks like it just came out of the box! Whatever it was used for before, it was very light.

I got her for $40, whatcha think?

Unfortunately not, very hard to find those. I don't think I'll be getting one because the pixel density is a little too high for my taste... Though, if I find one for a good price I might jump on it. CCFL displays are usually pretty easy to spot imperfections on, though. Odds are it'll be trash after 10 years.

>>62223229
Uncertain the GPU it came with, since
this is Librebooted it doesn't even activate it at boot. I have a T9600 in it right now, waiting on a SSD and HDD caddy. Gonna be my main machine when I'm done!

Actually some of the ThinkPad designers are still around from the IBM era.

>>62225685
>better means worse
No, bad keyboard means worse. I would have bought the thing if it didn't have a gigantic and now unneeded palm rest, and a proper keyboard, even if it was a gay-ass widescreen design instead of a proper NTSC format.

The new keyboards are widely complained about here, and if Lenovo expected to sell chinkshit chicklet boards to this image board's neckbeards, well, I'm keeping my X40.

Sorry Chang.

This one is a bit odd. 特性 means "special feature," and の(pronounced "no" is primarily a possessive particle, yet there's nothing before it that it could be pointing to. Chicklet keyboards are, on average, wider than non-chicklet boards on the X series.

>>
>>62225811
No, they're designed in Beijing to conform to Chinese military spying standards, for optimal data exfiltration from the west.
>>
>>62226474

>>
>>62225966
Everybody likes real keyboards better than chicklet boards when polled or studied. This was established in the 1980s and the research has only proved it's true time and again.

Chicklet keyboards are cheaper to make though, and wipe-able for HPPA standards, so that's what Chink companies make.

It's about keyboard, aspect ratio, lack of botnet, lack of whitelist, roll cage, and so on.

The idiot slopes at Lenovo think making a multi-color logo is what will appeal to Thinkpad fans who currently purchase older Thinkpads. They were deluded by whichever Jews work for them.

My advice to Lenovo, fire all Jews and listen to /g/ exclusively when making decisions about how to appeal to us.

Chinese people can't figure out how to market upscale items, they lost that talent with the Cultural Revolution. It's why they slavishly buy "designer" western goods produced in Viet Nam.

>>
>>62229403

>>
>>62229445
The resolution is somewhat OK for a 12" screen because you can't get more screen real estate out of something that small anyways. However, today it's more like a super cheap option for kike companies that buy laptops in truck loads for their employees.

5 years ago it was the only option for X series laptops but of course on a current gen computer it's just far from modern. That doesn't make the older X series models any less usable though. A 1080p screen that small requires scaling so in some way it's limiting the user. Linux fucks up scaling pretty bad.
>>
>>62229453
From my experience, Lubuntu is way better when it comes to memory use. 512MB should be sufficient.

trying to replace this old 11v battery in muh x220. Are amazon batteries reputable?
>>
I want to cry.
I see perfect T420 on ebay, with HD+ screen, with Linux (which probably means that it is sold by enthusiast), for just 120$ with free US shipping and 60$ shipping to my country...
But I already have good laptop that I use daily, and I don't have much time to tinker with second; I can't really spend money on it since I am saving them; and for some bullshit reason, PayPal doesn't approve my payments on ebay, and they even can't tell me the reason why!

Have had my 1920x1080 i7 w530 for a few weeks now. best $360 i've ever spent
>>
How worth it is it to go from the it 2420m + igpu to the i7 2640m + dgpu? It's about £100 for the motherboard for the t420s, possibly looking at an egpu setup too but I'd prefer it to be all in the laptop for ease of transport
>>
>>62233984
I'm getting a w520 in about a week. Do you run only windows or linux too?

Waiting (impatiently) for a drive caddy to add storage, I want to do a tri-boot with win, linux and osx

does anyone know how to reconfigure the click pad on thinkpads for ubuntu/xubuntu? its always had weird double click with left, pasting with middle behavior since i switched over from windows

What does /tpg/ think of the X230 ?

Nice, I want to put three drives in my thinkpad too. report back when you do get your tri-boot set up. I'd like to see how it goes

got my first memepad today boys, newish x220 with lenovo 6-cell and charger for £75, pretty proud of that deal. lovely to use so far although the win 10 it came with is throwing a hissyfit over activation.

does arch play well with all the extra bits it comes with?
>>

fun, mostly
i dev in windows and linux, been considering an osx port of my chat application, but really, it's just for fun.

What is a good small machine that has power to be used in a dock but small enough with decent battery to be used on the go?

I'm looking for a ~13-15 inch machine that I can use in a dock with multiple monitors for programming/work but also be able to take with me and use away from the desk, when I'm doing onsite work or just jerking it on the couch.

~$250 or so would be ideal.

Is this possible with a thinkpad?
>>
>>62234344
X220 or X230
>>
>>62234252
Probably
Check arch wiki
I think they have entries for thinkpads
>>
>>62234089
It's good but better with a classic keyboard
>>
>>62234344
X220 since X230 are slightly more expensive, and you still need to find dock.
>>
>>62234017
Drop the i7 and it's pretty okay
You'll be maxed out on the cpu for some titles like gta 5 though regardless of the ((((i7))))
>>
>>62233984
Your wallpaper is kind of ugly my dude
>>
>>62234377

Keyboard put aside, is there another difference between the X220 and the X230 ?

/g/ seems to dislike the X230...
>>
>>62233574
;-;
>>
>>62234426
Intel hasn't created anything new since Sandy Bridge, so CPU performance difference isn't noticeable. I guess, if you really don't care about keyboard, X230 is good as they have USB 3.0 (unlike X220 who only have them for i7 versions)
>>
>>62234426
Well some meme Queens will tell you that you that needing hardware to flash your bios for Intel me and high speed ram and other stuff is really bad because they're too incompetent to read instructions

They're too dumb to realize having a igpu that doubles the one in the X220 is a better investment than being able to flash your bios without a 5 dollar cable
>>
>>62234499
It's the igpu
Autists get very trigger when you mention fun or games to them
>>
>>62222977
Hi /g/entlemen,

I have a thinkpad X220 with 2 batteries I bought (first I bought a 6-cell, then after that I bought a 9-cell). I would love to find a way to get both charged at once, without having to swap the batteries. Is there a way to do that? Is anyone home-charging their batteries?
>>
this isn't really covered in the buyers guide so please no bully, but if money is not an issue what's the best newer model i can get that doesn't have any spooky stuff or bloatware on it? sorry for being a newfag
>>
>>62234586
It's easier for you to learn to reinstall your OS then to find non-bloated models, my dude.
>>
>>62234518

Thanks
And in term of security and backdoors, what is the difference between X220 and X230 ?
>>
>>62234586
>bloatware
This is not a phone, it's really easy to reinstall the OS and find what you need. If you want to go straight into the deep end, I personally went with debian CLI install and went from there.

>CLI means command line interface, no windows

For starters, go with Ubuntu. My laptop boots in 20 secs flat.
>>
>>62234632
None. The X200 has an older processor (Core 2 Duo), which doesn't have the Intel Management system. The X220 and X230 do. The IMS can send info home, but libreboot is working on that. After that, it may be as secure as the X200.
>>
>>62234586
It's okay my dude

Here are my recommendations
T470 - best all rounder with and it gets great battery with the extended one
X270 - it lacks thunderbolt but it's as good as a T470
Both of these install Linux pretty well due to not having a dgpu

T470p - if you need more resolution and a dgpu this is your lightest option
P51 - this is your small 15.6 workstation, honestly the biggest you should carry if you move a lot
P71 - this is the big boy and the most powerful thinkpad Lenovo offers as of now.

>>62234672
>>62234604
Also reinstalling your os, whether it's windows or Linux is a must
>>
>>62234705

Does Libreboot work on the X230 ?
>>
>>62234632
They're pretty much the same
You can install coreboot and neutralize Intel management engine though if you want
As I said it's a bit harder since you need to do it with hardware but not too hard for anyone competent
>>
>>62234732
No and it won't for a good while
>>
>>62234732
Nope, but you may have success with coreboot

The 1920x1200 displays are all the same judging from the service parts list. Also, can't use a quad core CPU because of Libreboot. The internal ATI GPU is also unusable, because it requires a non-free firmware blob at boot. External GPUs might be possible in my case because of Nouveau, but I don't plan on gaming on this either lol. I'm tempted but at the same time, I'm not running Windows and it would be difficult to make my theme scale how I'd want on it.

They don't all come with a FireGL GPU, they also can have a lesser GPU. I'm assuming since mine didn't come with the 1920x1200 display that it's the Radeon HD 3650. I can't really check since the hardware isn't initialized...

that sucks, although, the advance dock requires no extra drivers other than those of the GPU, so I'm sure you could find some freetard drivers

Yeah for sure for an older nvidia GPU, but like I said, don't plan on gaming. Could totally use it to output to more video devices, though.

/g/uys I love my T420 but god DAMN is this faggot heavy as fuck. What would be a decent alternative? I don't want to sacrifice too much power for a more compact machine, since I need something decent enough for school.
The weight would not be much of an issue if I did not have to carry books around.
>>
>>62235251
>>62235236
To be honest, these are some rather extreme examples. I just thought it was funny that people seriously think they're gonna get away with that, especially when my trusted Luxnote sells factory new pens from Lenovo for 25€. I just ordered one of those. I don't trust Aliexpress and I don't even have a credit card.

But I must also say that I never made a purchase bigger than €20.

Hey guys I just ordered

X61t
1.6GHz
2GB RAM
100GB HDD
non touch display (digitizer only)

for 50€.

Only problem seems to be a somewhat damaged battery but I'm fine with that.
Did I dun goofed?

I guess that's what you pay for build quality of T series, but really - they aren't much heavier than modern plastic 14" laptops

I don't like ebooks. I feel I learn more if I have the actual book, and luckily the books I need for this semester are dirt cheap, but somewhat big.
I use my samsung tab for notes since it has the pen but thats it. I carry around a ton of shit.
>>
>>62235342
I just bought a WWAN card from Aliexpress for my X220. Ali? 10.99$. Amazon starts at 30 with the Gobi 3000. Also fuck shipping payments.
