Google have the good sense to take advantage of the technologies available to them. If that benefits freedom, good, but don't make the mistake that they want what's best for you.

Apple used to be similar until a while back, they didn't care about Free Software, but they'd use it when appropriate. Under the current leadership they are actively hostile.

Linux actually has a larger marketshare since it's determined by ad and tracking services, which most Linux users block. Linux in reality would have a share closer to 5-7%.

if people didn't care about what data was collected when the use W10, then there wouldn't be so many guides on how to disable it. Secondly, linux IS widely used, and it gets patches for serious issues that are found. Windows also gets patches, at least weekly, so your 'security through obscurity' doesn't really hold up.

Linux is secure because it's not designed by idiots and not used by complete retards. You literally need a physical access to a Linux computer in order to use exploits, which are actively patched.

I really don't get why people consider Android to be Linux.

Is the Linux kernel present? Yeah, but it's buried so deeply that most Android developers, and pretty much all Android users, have absolutely no idea that it's there.

When you develop Android apps you have pretty much no direct interaction with the Linux kernel. You aren't writing POSIX-style applications that could be ported to the BSDs or macOS or Solaris or HP-UX with ease. You aren't using the GUI toolkits commonly used with other Linux systems. You're actually writing apps for what's effectively a proprietary Java-based environment.

When you use Android, you really aren't using the GNU utilities, systemd, X, Wayland, or any of the desktop environments typically found on a Linux system. You're using other software that is quite specific to Android.

Android is "Linux" in the most minimal sense. It clearly doesn't resemble other traditional Linux distributions. In fact, that's probably why it has been successful: a lot of the userland software that makes Linux a rather hostile environment for users has been totally discarded and replaced with far more effective, albeit essentially proprietary, replacements!

Google could probably silently switch the Linux kernel to the NetBSD kernel or some other kernel, and nobody else would have any idea it happened. That's how irrelevant and hidden the Linux kernel is to Android developers and users.

Perhaps that's what will eventually happen with something like the Fuchsia [wikipedia.org] project.

We shouldn't consider Android to be an example of Linux being popular. I think it's the opposite: we should see it as Android (that is: what's essentially the proprietary software and environment running on top of the Linux kernel) being popular, and the Linux kernel just happens to be along for the ride.

Windows 7 has almost everything performance and security wise

it fixed everything wrong with Vista, basically it's a "it just works OS"

Windows 8 and metro fucked up the desktop environment, the block layout works on tablets and phones where you have touch input, with it sucks to navigate with a mouse

eventually we got Windows 10 which fixed Windows 8 problems, but apart from faster boot times, showing the speed when copying files, there's really not much to upgrade if you already have windows 7

not to mention all the spyware and backdoors, and microsoft every now and then asking you if you want to keep opening files with the program you choose or with their own shitty versions
>>
based on what data collection?
these "market share" statistics are always a load of shit.
>>
It's pretty alarming given that distros are worse now than they've ever been and gentoo is the only non-shit one (which should really make you ask questions given the nature of gentoo).

They don't even know it can be disabled. "Normies" usually use things given to them out of the box without searching for alternatives. People who do sometimes disable it to improve battery life. I use my device without gapps and have no issues.

Trolling aside this really does show the growing power of Linux. 3.37% is huge when you take into account this is Desktop only. It is only 0.22% behind OS X which means Linux has entered the "mainstream" for whatever that is worth.

Looking at the rest it is safe to say XP and Other (other old Windows OS's?) is probably just old people holding out. When they die the Market share of Linux will blow up even more. Then take into account that Windows 7/8.1 users are likely to hold out until their dying breath or a better alternative comes along.

What this shows is that Linux has for the most part become user friendly to the point we will start to see more and more users. Added on top of the fact normies (that aren't Mac fags) are looking for alternative that is as user friendly as Windows 7. Gamers will come over once they can play vidya on Linux and that is already happening.

All this points to someone making a "retard proof" version of Linux and marketing it normies as the new Windows. My bet is on Samsung or Sony. So rejoice faggots this is a sign of the changing times!

>>
>>62221587
But then you have to stop all your work to use the other OS, nevermind the long-running tasks you might have (servers or otherwise). Illuminos has solid virt capabilities (unlike the BSDs, OSX and windows; some say it's better than linux too but comparisons are scarce) but doesn't have much else going for it at the moment. Linux has tons of shit which ultimately makes e.g. programming the best on it. Wangblows has muh gaems, and OSX is useful to troll /g/. That's pretty much it. Thus, you would be spending most of your time either on wangblows or linux and wasting your time just to troll /g/ by booting into OSX just isn't worth it.
For games, you can GPU passthrough and you're good to go, too.
In conclusion:
Illuminos provides a safe base with good virt support
Wangblows base env is not viable because you have no control over it and it's more full of holes than the average sieve
OSX has nothing going for it, period
Modern linux is kinda broken and the direction it's going is nowhere but the trash, thus another option should be sought.
>>
>>62218898
>I enjoy my computer restarting without my permission nor any notification while important overnight batch jobs are running on Wangblows 10dicks
You are asked several times to set a timeframe in which it is acceptable for your computer to restart, and if you can't restart it within a 24 hour period you have the option to delay the restart for up to several weeks before it forces you to restart. If you install updates any less frequently than once a month you are retarded and shouldn't be allowed access to a personal computer for your own sake.

If Wine can finally get over the largest reverse engineering hurdle and get at least Windows XP-like compatibility with Windows programs then maybe Linux could become a serious competitor. Software availability is everything. Right now running something like Word 2000 on Wine is still a hurdle. Wine also needs to be more smartly programmed and come with a database that contains the best possible configuration that's been tested for each program. There's too much work that the user has to do to get a program working optimally, they shouldn't need to manually deal with any "winetricks" shit.

How hard is it to install osx in virtualbox?
>>
>>62218791
>only took less than a year to reach 3.59%
That's about how far it gets, the oldest MacOS has 0.0% market share

Dumb mactoddler

A real pain in the ass, I actually had to use a virtual disk with macOS pre-installed.

You don't have 10 minutes to spare once a month? Why are you running a desktop OS for such a mission critical application? And I hope you remain disconnected from any internet-facing network.

The point is the user should have the choice.

The whole point of active hours is to restart while you're asleep or something when it doesn't bother you. Yes, the fact you can't do in-place updates on NT is a pain in the ass, but it is what it is. Really though there's no reason not to restart every so often regardless of whether you have pending updates or not.

Russia banned microsoft products
>surely has nothing to to with sudden growth

No they shouldn't. You give the user a choice and they will without fail hit "later" every single time, and then you get another case of billions of dollars being caused in damage by some virus that tears through retards using non-updated software. MS is more aggressive with updates in 10 because people have shown they can't be trusted with a choice. When the choice is "update" or "don't update", only retards choose the second option and they need to be protected from themselves. The forced updates don't inconvenience normal people because they understand the importance of updates and make sure to install them in a timely manner.

It's the same setup as on linux, it's just that they're purported to have better implementations and 1st class low-level drivers for stuff like filesystem, virtualization, input and whatnot as far as I know. I haven't had the time to sit down and really dig into it, but it appears that the same qemu setup you'd use would work.

You should have the ability to turn all that shit off. Normies did fine for years with XP, 7, 8.1. I've this exact same argument with other shills, so I'm going to stop replying now.

No you shouldn't.

>Normies did fine for years with XP, 7, 8.1
tip: the "billions of dollars in damage" was not a hypothetical, it has happened many many times before and almost always using an exploit that had been patched weeks or months before the malware appeared

You appear to be claiming that Windows is a secure operating system at all, let alone without updates, which is so laughable I can only assume you're trolling.

>it's a anon sticks his fingers in his ears and yells 'shill' episode
im getting tired of these reruns, the quality of the show has really suffered over the last few years thanks to all these reddit crossovers
