First time using Linux as an installed OS on hardware instead of a demo. Ubuntu 17.something on an old Samsung netbook I had lying around. Not sure if its this shitty HDD or the fact its got an Intel Shatom CPU but this shit is really slow. I'll probably try out Lubuntu on this next. After many, many years I'm finally trying Linux, I feel there's a lot more to it than the things I've seen in the first few hours on this non-ideal machine. I think a lot of people get put off too quick then never go back to it. I'll maybe try a flavor of Linux on one of my ThinkPads soon. It'll take a lot of time though because I won't be able to pull away once I get started.

Share stories of your first ever times using LInux.

try xubuntu if your pc is shitty

My first time using Linux was a knoppix live CD that I used in class for a system recovery lab. This was back in 2006. It didn't really click then, but I tried out a couple distros last year, and made the full time switch to Linux around March.

I'll probably be doing something similar. I just need to build up experience in Linux because Windows is obviously going to shit and I should ween myself off Windows 7, so I better get used to Linux sooner or later. Learn how to make it mine and mold it how I want. Does anyone know if Lenovo's utilities and shit are available on Linux and if they work as well as they do on Windows 7?

>Lenovo's utilities
What is this, and what does it do?

Try xubuntu even if your pc isn't shitty

Like all the power management and hardware tuning utilities. Sometimes they're pretty useful. Especially on Windows if you've ever used them.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux operating system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.

Its dependent upon your laptop model, there is no universal set of utilities.

this or lubuntu
>>
Try something light like lububtu/xubuntu if you want to stick to Ubuntu alts. Also make sure you avoid resource whoring DEs such as gnome and unity.

You probably won't be able to find the same thing, but there are applications with similar functionality.

Their wiki is good for recommendations even if you is a different distribution.

why xubuntu and not ubuntu?? aren't they same except xubuntu being lighter and something?

a computer course in 2005. ubuntu 5.04 and a version of red hat. the main thing i got out of it was that i could search for open source instead of getting cracked programs of everything. and even back then i hated gnome and thought kde was more fun.
