It's supposed to be a "security focused phone" and they want this to get people into the "digitial rights revolution."

They will need marketing resources, and if this is like any other FOSS phone endeavor, I presume they won't even try to market it because as sad as I must admit, the FOSS community is absolutely TERRIBLE at marketing, so it will gain no mainstream adoption and fade into obscurity like the rest of them. They will probably try to rely on word of mouth, but at best that will gain them some adoption in FOSS circles but it will score them no luck in gaining any mainstream adoption because most people don't keep up the FOSS community.

It will most likely only be sold from their website and not sold in any stores on carrier websites or any brick and mortar stores, which means that only some people who are already in-the-know will buy it.

If this even reaches production, based on past observation of similar FOSS smartphone attempts, I don't expect it to last long.

The kernel doesn't protect you from proprietary firmware and hardware, such as the baseband:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseband_processor
>A baseband processor typically uses its own RAM and firmware
>Since the software which runs on baseband processors is usually proprietary, it is impossible to perform an independent code audit. By reverse engineering some of the baseband chips, researchers have found security vulnerabilities that could be used to access and modify data on the phone remotely
https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/replicant-developers-find-and-close-samsung-galaxy-backdoor
>Today's phones come with two separate processors: one is a general-purpose applications processor that runs the main operating system, e.g. Android; the other, known as the modem, baseband, or radio, is in charge of communications with the mobile telephony network. This processor always runs a proprietary operating system, and these systems are known to have backdoors that make it possible to remotely convert the modem into a remote spying device. The spying can involve activating the device's microphone, but it could also use the precise GPS location of the device and access the camera, as well as the user data stored on the phone. Moreover, modems are connected most of the time to the operator's network, making the backdoors nearly always accessible
>we discovered that the proprietary program running on the applications processor in charge of handling the communication protocol with the modem actually implements a backdoor that lets the modem perform remote file I/O operations on the file system

The best thing that can happen to them and the backers is if that fails to reach the goal.

This would be the 3-4th Linux based phone to be attempted, and it will surely fail.

If they truly want to succeed, they should start by simply forking from the failed projects and finish what they started. eg. Mer/Sailfish, Ubuntu Touch, Firefox OS, KDE mobile, etc

I'm asking this because the last time i tried Ubuntu 16.04 or whatever it was called, there wasn't any full disk encryption (well, you could enable it for your home folder if you wrote 20k lines of code into the terminal).

Android has FDE

You're wrong. The Ubuntu installer has for ages offered filesystem encryption via ecryptfs (your home folder), and also block device encryption via dm-crypt. And neither of those require "20k lines of code" to configure, and in fact it's better to configure manually just so you understand the basics of what's going on. Clearly you don't understand at all, especially if you blindly trust whatever encryption solution your device offers.

A tablet sounds interesting. I've been meaning to get a tablet at some point but the software has been a problem. I don't want locked down dummy mode iOS and Android tablets stop getting updates after you bring them home from the store. Maybe this one would keep getting updates forever.

A phone is more difficult to change since it's used for everything and limiting the amount of apps is a handicap. A tablet would only be used for browsing and reading and watching videos, anything with a screen can do that.

>You can, however, tell the phone to be always disconnected, unless you actually need to be connected. You can also actually disable the baseband processor so it can't spy on you by being connected to the mic at all times.

Why even have a smartphone in the first place? At that point your probably better of having a dumbphone a tablet with loonix or libreboot freetard thinkpad.

Also being paranoid over the mic being turned on all the time is such a burger thing to be stressed about. I can't confirm nor deny that they don't do this here in the EU, but the privacy policies here are extremely strict so even if they here something they don't like there's almost nothing they can do about it.

Another tiny tidbit about the latter. In Croatia almost all video or audio material that has been taken without your permission no matter who recorded it can't be used against you as evidence in court.

The whole Purism ecosystem is a terrible approach to

Why make a completely new phone OS that will never get any support from anything whatsoever instead of working on Android? Android is open source and is pretty much universal at this point. All they would have to focus on is hardware and a TWRP-like bios.

On the topic of hardware, why do all the purism laptops use modern intel processors? Isn't the point of the lifestyle they are trying to push that everything is "free"? It doesn't matter if both the bootloader and OS is free if you can't be sure that the microcode on the hardware will fuck you up in the end.

I'd love for them to succeed, but this isn't the right attempt.

They have worked with a team to scrub the Intel Management Engine from the processors. From what I can tell, about 98% can currently be removed. Yes, 98% isn't 100%, but it certainly limits what someone can do. And there are efforts to remove the remaining few percent.

Additionally, I wouldn't say it's a "completely new" phone OS. Assuming it is (or spins off from) their PureOS (which is basically Debian as far as I can tell), then you just have a Linux distro on a touch screen. As long as Linux developers make stuff for touchscreens, you have access to it

I think most criticisms of trying to reinvent the wheel are a bit too harsh. I mean, yes there is something to be said about doing _everything_ from scratch, but there could also be value in getting their own products to be more consistent with each other, as it allows them to (in the future) be able to deisgn a better system that hopefully just works for the normies. And they also try to work with existing things (PureOS is based off debian, and they are collaborating with Matrix for the phone).

That said, I do think they need to do more work. On the hardware side, the laptop processors still have the proprietary Intel ME, and the last time I checked, most phone hardware is a nightmare for open source drivers.

On the software side, I feel like PureOS needs to be good for normies, but I feel like they could be forgiven for the first few releases since they are quite new and still need to further know the target market.
