So a guy allegedly has CP on his drive that is encrypted, but wont give the password to the drive.
If there is a backdoor, then why doesn't the govmnet open the door and look at his hard drive?
<There is no backdoor!
>>
>>62180381
Which backdoor? There isn't a single one.

He probably used Veracrypt, which is open source and does not have said backdoors. If he had used Microsoft's Bitlocker, he would've been fucked.

What I don't get is how do they know he had known CP hashes if his drive is encrypted?
>>
>>62180421

Backdoors:

>cpu backdoor
>MS backdoor
>encryption software hamstring

Every day there is a thread on this site about backdoors, yet most data spills occur via sneakernet or out right physical theft.
>>
>>62180421
I believe it's OS X's builtin encryption.

If there are backdoors it's kind of a double edged sword. Getting in through one reveals its existence. There are actually pedophiles charged through a Tor exploit who were allowed to walk free because the FBI wouldn't give up how the exploit worked. These security holes have more value when used against shit like Iranian centrifuges rather than kiddie fiddlers' laptops.

I used veracyrpt to encrypt an external 500gb HD

Tried to mount it once, it was taking like 45 minutes to mount for some reason, despite taking nowhere near that long the first time I mounted it, it froze my entire PC, had to hard reset, and upon rebooting it had completely wiped my SSD. As in my internal SSD, not the external veracrypted HDD.

Scared to even plug it into anything now. Might just format it completely.

Intelligence agencies don't use their super secret techniques for normal criminal stuff, because then they'd have to reveal their method, which would hurt their ability to use the technique.
>>
Because they already have him detained on reasonable suspicion.

There have been multiple cases in the past where the prosecutors have dropped charges because it was not in their interest to admit how they obtained a piece of evidence and thus it could not be considered in the case. One bloke's CP collection isn't worth it.
>>
Here's the bigger question: How do they know he even has CP on his drive? I thought American courts worked on an "innocent until proven guilty" mindset. If they can't prove he's guilty with the resources they have at hand, shouldn't they let him go? I mean, what if he unlocks the drive and all that's on it is a text file that says "Haha no CP here, get fucked FBI" #WasteTheirTime2017

If he was using P2P(Freenet honeypot), then it'd be possible for them to determine that his IP was indeed downloading hashes of known CP.

Of course, in order to prosecute him, they need proof it's actually on his HDD, which is encrypted.

What's the point of encryption if they can just hold you indefinitely if you don't decrypt it?
The only usefulness I can think of is if you don't want a non-government official seeing your data.

immigration is literally what made america great in the first place. the rest of her success has been a direct result of that, and the 2nd and 3rd generation of heirs to her wealth have grown fat and complacent. they now ignorantly think her success was somehow the product of their bloodline, which, ironically, is arguably the most heterogeneous in history. now they want to wall themselves in, thinking that they can somehow sustain a level of greatness that owes itself entirely to an unwalled garden in the first place.

In the USA, the government could look at his harddrive through a backdoor, but none of the information could be used against the suspect because the info would have been obtained without a warrant.

If a warrant is obtained by legal means, even then, the defense can ask to examine the methods used in the backdoor decryption, and the government would not want to reveal this.

You will get no answers because there is none.

I no real life scenario has a backdoor been used.
You can still support the case of agencies using it on high profile people but that's still imagination - also it considers that for some odd reason governmental agencies and private corporations are very chill with each other lol.
>>
Stop using a moral dilemma as an excuse to revoke privacy, there would be obvious evidence implicating this drive to contain cp, otherwise they would not know if it should even be suspect.

Conducting a more thorough investigation beforehand wouldn't require the case to get hung up on decrypting 2 drives.
>>
They don't pull out the backdoors for child pornographers. They only pull them out for the real bad guys. Not terrorists, not murderers.
White nationalists. You can bet if he'd been a white nationalist too, he'd have the backdoors thrown at him.

Anyway, US law is pretty clear on this; if the police don't have other evidence to show them what is on the encrypted drive, then he is not obliged to decrypt it.

Immigration isn't what made america great. What made america great was the massive quantity of untapped resources being discovered at the time of the industrial revolution. Immigrants provided the workforce for this to happen. Immigrants aren't needed anymore since there are enough people to work the machines.

Yeah, when America had a surplus of jobs, a surplus of opportunities, a surplus of social service capacity like education, a surplus of affordable housing choices and the immigrants came here to work and contribute rather than collect benefits.

I fully support immigration under those circumstances.

Unfortunately the economy is in shambles thanks to 8 years of a democrat president, a bunch of greedy rent seeking business people who aren't hiring or competing, democrat mayors and governors strangulating housing and new industry, etc etc etc etc etc

If you know for certain that there is CP on the drive, then you have sufficient evidence to prosecute without the drive needing to be decrypted. If you do not, then it is not a foregone conclusion. Either way, you must proceed with the trial as fast as possible. The defendant has a constitutional right to a speedy trial. The prosecution does not have a right to the perfect evidence.
