How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

With a ~$70 difference between the 1050 TI and the 1060 3GB, is jumping up to the 1060 for ~50% more fps the best move value wise right now?

When can we hope this overjewed graphic cards bullshit will end?

that PSU is actually a little overboard, and you could get some 3200 ram or faster (not sure how well the fastest frequencies work with intel).
but that's a very expensive build.
>>
>>62170238
Pretty nice. If you can get 3200MHz ram for a few bucks more do it. And I would absolutely get an SSD.

breddy gud. Only concern is the ram getting to 3200 and cpu cooler for overclocking. The stock is good for mild overclock (~3.6) but beyond that it runs out of steam.

Currently building my PC. Everything is inside. However, when I turn on the power, only my motherboard lights up. When I try power it on at the power button, nothing happens.

I am not plugging in something clearly - any ideas?
>>
>>62172030
Is the power button plugged to the motherboard?
>>
>>62172030
The front panel headers are probably off, those are a bitch to work with.
>>
>>62172059
Yep, that's all plugged in - including the 8 pin. I disconnected everything and left only them in with the hard drives all wired up - no CPU, no VGA (and the CPU socket supplied with my PSU is very odd in that it doesn't fit into the PSU) and only the motherboard lit up once more. I'm confused as to *what* should be plugged in.

>>62172063
As in what is supplied with the case? I keep fiddling around with them to no avail - maybe I just need to fiddle further...
>>
>>62172144
No, the literal power button you're pushing to start it, as >>62172063 said. Look at your motherboard manual. Some guy yesterday had literally the same problem and he wired the power button backwards.

Does anyone else use contact cleaner on their CPU contacts to reduce voltage drop?
>>
>>62172408
Twice in a row, that's funny. I hope the guy from yesterday sees this, it will make him feel better about his mistake.
>>
>>62172427
However, though it turns things on, it doesn't turn anything else but the fan and the motherboard on. I imagine this is a problem with the CPU and the VGA - but neither fit into the PSU well, nor have any place on the motherboard. What's the problem here?
>>
>>62172630
Correction: the graphics card fan, and presumably the graphics card, is also working. Just nothing seems to show.
>>
>>62172426
I don't see the point, I got my FX brand new and the voltage dips just because my board is shit and has no load line nonsense to help it.
>>
Just bought gtx 1080 from palit gamerock premium version, is this any good?
>>
>>62172426
Does it actually help?
>>
New to this General

Why in the OP does it not recommend i7 or i5 unless discounted? I'm sure there's a good reason but I'd like to know what it is. I use an i5 in my HTPC and it runs pretty well.
>>
>>62172727
It's from the perspective of building a new PC. Taking into account it's on a new socket and they plan to support it for a while, Ryzen generally makes more sense. Price to performance, harder to find a better deal for a new system build.

FWIW, I'm still on a i5-2500 and it serves me fine.
>>
>>62172668
Yeah, shitty motherboard is going to matter more than the CPU contacts.
>>62172702
Yeah, barely. If you have a good motherboard, it's one more thing you can do to make things run better, it'll barely drop the resistance, which means lower voltage and less heat.
>>
>>62172702
Not as much as just spending the extra 30$ on a better cpu and mobo in the first place.
>>
>>62172867
Too late if you already own a motherboard and CPU, and there's an eBay seller selling it for only $15 shipped right now.
>>
I bought a 7700k and ddr4 4233. It was worth it. Feel bad for people doing high refresh on ryzen.
>>
My cpu fan just came in today. The box was opened but everything is still inside, should i be worried? Not all my pc parts are in, so i can't test out everything.
>>
>>62173133
I wouldn't worry if everything's in good shape, my Hyper TX3 cooler had a few bent fins while being perfectly sealed, had to bend that shit back the way it was before I put it on.
>>
>>62173167
Yeah, i bought the H7 cryhorig and it says to "return if registration card is missing" but it's still here so.. yeah.
>>

A random video obviously isn't worth more than measured data but that chart doesn't look to useful either. What the heck do they use to measure, a phone? If everything ends up at roughly the same noise level anyways your methodology is fucked.

As for VEGA, there isn't much to talk about. Blower designs have always been on the louder side and the card sucking up more than 250W doesn't help either. If you're OK with that because you have closed headphones on all the time, neat for you. Doesn't mean the card's silent.

Anything breaks. Just RMA with the manufacturer. How hard is that?

>>62175754
>Also can you explain why this case comes so highly recommended?
Which case?
>>
>>62175768
The NZXT-S340 and 630. I'm not sure what to look for in a case.
>>
I'm trying to avoid building a new pc, I feel I can fix mine but I'm not optimistic anymore. Constant crashes that I just cannot diagnose. Tried to get a new copy of windows onto a flash drive and try a clean install with just one ssd, but it crashed while writing files and more I've got a "raw" disk. How the fuck do I fix it or does that mean I pissed away 10 bucks
>>
>>62175792
S340 is recommended because it is a decently priced casing with all the features you want in a case without being over fancy. Also a design that can't go wrong (it is literally a black box), if you want something more fancy, you can pay more but whatever you are paying for will be better if you built it yourself than buying from IBP.

Here is the same build with a 1080 instead of a 1080ti.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CZ7HHN
That is a price difference of 400 or so dollars. You can pretty up your build however you want.
>>
>>62175831
>Constant crashes that I just cannot diagnose

>>
>>62175684

>>62175834
What would you recommend for a semi-modular PSU? I am selling my entire old PC so I don't exactly have the cables laying around. I wanna keep the ti though.
>>
1060 3gb for $190 good?

Replacing a 760, but don't plan on keeping it as a long term card. Card drought just hurting right now.

1600x, 32gb of 2400, and 500gb sd, and other things bought already during sales, just GPU is the last part that's cockblocking me.

Can handle 1080 for now til this gpu shitstorm blows over.
>>
>>62175858
You shouldn't reuse PSU cables.
Any PSU with the seasonic brand is a good PSU.
>>
>>62174364
I have had two of those. They blow. Wait for RMA you single-marshmallow faggot
>>
>>62175877
>3GB
>2017
You know how people laughed at the 970 for having 3.5 VRAM? You are buying a card with 0.5 lesser VRAM.
>>
>>62175880
I didn't really plan on it. Its just that fully modular seems a bit too expensive for what it does having to buy all new separate cables.
>>
So I was thinking about building for the first time, maybe a budget system, so I've been looking at used i5s. Am I wrong or do they really not devalue much? Even 3+ years old.
>>
>>62175845
Yes, for 30 hours, tons of errors. I assumed it was ram, replaced it, no dice. I think it might be the ssd, they both went on at the same time, with a fresh install of windows in the ssd. After that, constant crashes that became more and more frequent until I can only work on it for 10 minute bursts before a crash interrupts me. No clue man, my only guess is my old ass mobo didn't like the ssd and decided to fuck everything up.

I wanted to get a copy of windows for my USB and just rma the ssd but that was a no go, I've got a broken USB now.
>>
>>62175253
Why 16GB?
>>
>>62175892
I have a 760. 2gb. MSI
>>
>>62175902
If there are tons of error that means something is fucking with the RAM, if replacing the RAM didn't fix it, it means the RAM slots are busted.

Try again with RAM into other channels. Otherwise your Mobo is fucked.
>>
>>62175895
A fully modular PSU comes with cables when you buy it. A semi modular PSU works as well. Just don't get a fully modular one.
>>
this is my current build

Is anything unbalanced and should be altered? Part of me feels like I need a better PSU, and to get a EVGA G2 750 to run in eco mode. The PSU is the loudest part of my setup now.
>>
>>62175892
No one would've laughed at a 3.5GB 970. People laughed at the 970 because it was the equivalent of selling a 1TB SSD made out of 896GB flash and 128GB in floppy discs.
>>
>>62175937
Better PSU.
HDD.
>>
>>62175926
I'll try the other slots but I've had ram in all 4 and still got crashes. Is there a way to fix the raw USB? I tried a few freeware programs but no success
>>
>>62175953
>HDD

I have a NAS setup, that's why there's no HDD
>>
>>62175945
The 970 were running into VRAM issues back in 2015. Games were using close to 4 GB VRAM back then. Much more now. A 3 GB GPU won't cut it unless you drop textures.
>>
>>62175935
I've been living a lie. I didn't know since I haven't bought a fully modular one. It sounds better if it does come with just the basics. So it comes with the cable for the Mobo, CPU, GPU, and at least enough for the HDD and SSD?
>>
>>62175961
Plug it into windows.
Do a full format.
Otherwise it is fucked.
>>
>>62175899
Why buy used if you can get new parts in the same price range? An old i5 now really isn't worth it if you don't already have board+ram. What's your budget?

>>62175937
A 500W PSU is plenty for that. And there is no reason to replace the current one except maybe noise, nonidea what fans they're using in that series. Its definetly a quality PSU though, so there are no concerns about it killing your system whatsoever.
>>
>>62175975
It comes with all the cables that a non-modular one has. It is just up to you if you want to plug them in all not. Every slot on the PSU will have a corresponding cable in the box.
>>
>>62175994
I am in your debt. I'll get this build and it'll be slightly better than the other because of the GPU. Still have to >buy Windows though most likely.
>>
>>62175976
Doesn't show up in disk management except on the bottom screen as disk 2. Can't do anything from there. Clean disk in diskpart does nothing either. Damn. Wonder if I can rma the dollar general.

>>
>>62175975
It comes with cables for all the connectors it is specced out to have. Check the speccsheet, it tells you how many PCIe x6/8, 4pin cpu, molex, data and maybe floppy connectors it has.
>>
>>62176014
Buy windows off a grey market site.
There is Kinguin, Ebay or Allkeysite.
An OEM key should cost you 25 US dollars.
>>
>>62176016
If your mobo is faulty, I won't put it past a rogue current shorting and killing your USB when you plugged it in.
>>
>>62176051
Wouldn't that mean the mobo has killed almost anything connected to it? Meaning I need to start from the bottom? I was just going to replace it plus some ddr4 ram, but it sounds like it all has to go. What do I have to spend for a decent mobo? 100?
>>
>>62176076
Nope. Might be just be the USB 3.0 hub. I don't know. Just don't plug more stuff into your mobo. What mobo you are getting is dependent on your CPU socket.

So build would be:

Mobo + cpu + 8gb ram: 110 eur
Gtx 770: 75 eur
Everything else (HDD, case, etc): 60 eur

245 eur for that build. Wat do u think?

in ausfailia currently the 1080ti is 2x the price of 1070, but i thought 1080ti was right around 2x the speed? isn't it decent value?
>>
>>62178211
GPUs don't decay. The 1080Ti means I can play every game out now + 2 years in future at high/max settings on 1440p/144Hz. That will take me a long while to get through (been out of AAA gaming since late 00s).

Sure, I may have to start tuning down settings for some games 3 yrs+ from now. Big deal. Honestly I can only see games pushing past the 1080Ti by doing more extreme particles like Destiny 2 (disgusting), or with VR (don't care yet). I'm betting future game innovation will require more CPU processing / multithreading for multi agent AI compute.

I figure paying a bit more now means I get to enjoy the best gaming experience possible for the next few years, rather than always being stuck in middling territory and feeling that envy to upgrade.

>Want to play at 1440p 144Hz
>1070 and 1080 are at same price/perf ratio as 1080Ti
>Vega is overpriced and unstocked
>I have money

Is there any such thing as a good monitor? TN panels have mediocre at best image quality due to vertical gamma shift, IPS panels have glow and garbage contrast ratio, VA panels have woefully slow pixel transitions on certain colours making them useless for HFR.

It just seems like there's nothing worth buying.

It's not bad. It's very expensive, and you won't gain anything by storing your music or movies on an SSD instead of a HDD.
Also you're using its life more quickly I suppose.

No. At some point you to pick what you want your monitor to suck at. If it makes you feel better, actual good broadcast monitors make all the gaymen shit look like total ass in terms of image quality anyway, so you might as well go for the HFR stuff.

If you don't plan on keeping it for a long time, and are ok with playing on medium graphics, get a 1050 Ti.

absolutely get 3200MHz ram, and a good mouse.
since you have fuckoff money you could just get an M.2 SSD.
you don't need that good of a power supply, a 80+ Gold with 650W would be enough. but having the one you chose isn't bad in any way of course.

I want to upgrade some of my hardware, here's what I got (posting from work so I don't remember exact specs):

~i5-3330 Quad-Core
GTX550 Ti 1GB
8GB RAM
500GB HDD (yeah I haven't got to transferring to an SSD yet even though I have a spare one lying around)

I thought about getting a GTX1050Ti, is there anything else that is seriously bottlenecking me? I don't care about max details, just upgrading a lil' bit, am poorfag

Which of these is going to happen if you use a PSU that's too weak to power your components?

1. The thing won't boot.

2. Crashes under load.

3. The PSU turns your PC into a sea of flames.

Use MSI Afterburner and check your GPU usage and clockspeeds during gaming. Check whether the GPU or CPU is running at 100% usage. If it does most of the time, then your GPU is a bottleneck. If it's the CPU, your FX-8120 is at fault.
