He isnt right and he is proven wrong in that same image..He got all good with redhat and does what ever they tell him to do. People see "oh redhat is using it,it must be good" and blindly adopt it.systemd is now a dependency for programs that dont even fucking touch it. Not only did he lie blatantly about the goal of systemd and how he was goign to handle it, hes covered up what he said in the past to make it more convenient for him instead of providing features.Such as udev being forkable

It does actually. But Gentoo is rolling release so it's a bit awkward to make stable versioned releases. Every few years though they make one.
Just go to their download page and you want the "Hybrid ISO (LiveDVD)". Note that it's dated at 2016-07-04, while the other minimal cd option is much more recent at 2017-08-24.

sorry, that's what i came to ask about but i posted too early
i did some quick reading on the subject earlier and it seems it's quite easy to brick your laptop so I thought I'd ask about it here
If I use the Ubuntu live disk (flash drive) with gparted to resize the Ubuntu partition, can it screw up my entire SSD/whatever space is allocated to the partition or will it just break linux installation, which althought bothersome, wouldn't be catastrophic because i've only been using it for a week and it's no biggie to reinstall?

I don't currently use Linux, but I want to eventually switch since Windows is too shitty to use now with 10. A friend was telling me that there's a way to run a virtual Windows machine, but with very little overhead, and what would support 3d and all that fun stuff that something like VirtualBox doesn't, as long as my hardware supports passthrough. Sounds too good to be true. Can I run Linux and just virtualize Windows without any real issues or crazy overhead? Linux with games is the goal, but I assume that's just a pipe dream still.
>>
I got to talk about my Linux/FOSS experiences in an interview. It felt rewarding after a lot of mucking around for little return. I think it demonstrated some level of technical competency.

It's cancer that wants to be the "plumbing" for Linux. It's a huge binary full of security holes and pointless features jammed into PID 1 that calls on a whole series of interdependent binaries (like 70 of them) to do things that we already had ways of doing in a worse, less portable way. Also Lennart and friends are terrible programmers who are also full of themselves and expect everybody else to do things their way, they even tried to claim that adding debug to the kernel command line should activate systemd debugging even though its the fucking kernel command line.

Every single screenshot of Xfce looked like a cheap 90s screenshot.
KDE looks pretty, but doing anything feels so damn slow and I can't deal with its applications.
Working with Unity feels fast and it's pretty, but I feel ashamed for some reason. Also, with it being abandoned by Ubuntu, it sounds like a sinking ship.
GNOME looks awesome and I like the applications the most, but the focus on a tablet feeling and the activities screen must be the most retarded things to have ever been conceived.
Still have to to try Cinnamon.

But my biggest problem of all: I actually really want tiling WMs. I like the ease of configuring i3, but I just can't figure out how to eliminate the tearing with Compton, and I miss all the more complex functions like panels and widgets. I know it was the point, but i3 is just too simple.
Might have to look into other tiling WMs like Awesome, but nobody ever talks about them here.

Probably. Mice and keyboards are almost never an issue, even wireless ones.
What is likely to not work though is any features that need special software to operate. So the adjustable mouse DPI might not work and you'd be locked to 1 DPI setting (unless you could temporarily move the mouse to a machine that can run the software where you can adjust it and then move it back to your Linux machine, or adjust it through a VM or something)
But who knows, there might be a way to do it natively on Linux or someone might remake the software for Linux, it happens sometimes. But I wouldn't count on that.

>>62156524
When you create the VM you give it however many cores you want to give it out of what you have available.
The two things you need are two GPUs (one can be the internal GPU if your CPU gas one) and hardware that supports vt-d/amd-vi.

What's the deal with OpenSUSE? Why do I get the feeling that it sucks ass?

I recently installed it because I got tired of how plain incomplete fedora felt on my machine, but this isn't much better. I am getting the feeling that they're mostly good at memeing and marketing, but not that great and producing a distro that is accessible and competitive with the rest. I tried finding general info that someone migrating to their distro would like to know, and they seem to have hidden it.

I've been on Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, and Fedora so far, and they all did a solid job on their webpage. They all make a strong case as to what the distro has to offer, and you can easily get to a place on their webpage that tells you all you need to know to get up and running.

Just simple things, like the package manager. It's one of the first things you read about when migrating to a new system, and arguably one of the more important ones. apt-get, pacman, dnf, you always get told how to update and install new packages. The fact that this info wasn't in my face with OpenSUSE was a bit of a shock to me.

And I still don't really get it, like, why are they so proud of their GUI software centre YaST? Why aren't they using a terminal-based package manager like all other sane distros do? I get that you can use zipper, but what's the difference? Why isn't there a terminal interface for YaST? Why has this not been clarified to me already?

It seems whenever I go hunting on their website for info, I can only find pages telling me how I can contribute. It's like they're just a fascade, desperately trying to get people inside to actually complete the damn thing.

Am I just an idiot and OpenSUSE is actually good? Have I just been missing the right pages all along, clicking the wrong links? It's just weird to me. I found their wiki, but that seems written for people only now picking up a computer for the first time. How can this be one of the big names out there?

OpenSUSE is pretty boring and I see it as more of an enterprise style distro, focused on a stable easy enough to use desktop. YaST isn't just meant to be a software center, it's meant to be a GUI frontend fir configuring various things. The software part is just a frontend for zypper anyway, so you aren't missing out when you use zypper on the terminal.

As an inexperienced Linux user, I've been using it for the past 4 weeks and still don't know how you're _supposed_ to install software. Using YaST is kinda infuriating sometimes.

If you're not a gamer then just switch from xorg to Wayland. From what I've heard that'll fix your tearing.

If you do want to play games and you use an NVidia card then you can eliminate tearing by doing this:
https://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/how-to-an-update-on-fixing-screen-tearing-on-linux-with-an-nvidia-gpu.8892

Also
>Every single screenshot of Xfce looked like a cheap 90s screenshot
That is the pinnacle of computer aesthetics in my opinion.
I maintain that there is something deeper to "retro graphics" that speaks to the logical part of our minds. Perhaps it's the fact that limitations cause the underlying functionality of the computer to be more visible. Whenever I see old screenshots I just want to program something or seriously dig into the mechanics of a computer.
It's almost as if in the modern computer age "beauty" is associated with covering up the underlying mechanics of the computer with bandaids, but if I wanted to look at art I would go to a museum. I want my computer to look like a computer.
It's very unfortunate that everyone associates that style with just being "retro", outdated, or ugly. Its _true_ simplicity that makes it beautiful, not merely the appearance of visual simplicity like Windows and Mac shoot for.

That being said, I use i3.

I checeked and it's empty.
However, I did "su -" this time and EDITOR wasn't set. When I did "printenv" from a regular "su" all of my environment variables were inherited. Looking at the man page, it seems that inheriting them is the default if I don't use "su -l" or its alias "su -".

The reason I was looking into this was because "systemctl edit service" used Nano when I did it with "sudo", but vim when I ran it as root after switching with "su".
This brings me closer to figuring out how to make "systemctl edit" use my vim configuration when editing with sudo or to make it use sudoedit.
>>
>>62161937
Set the env variable SYSTEMD_EDITOR= to your choice for systemctl edit, SUDO_EDITOR= for sudo -e
>>
>>62161966

I'm trying, but failing miserably.

What I want is when I do
sudo systemctl edit service
for it to open the file with my EDITOR and to be able to save it.
Which combination of environment variables would achieve that cleanly?
>>
>>62162017
The one I just mentioned? It works here
Have you exported it in your .bash_profile or something?
Have you logged out and logged back in?
Did you test it like this SYSTEMD_EDITOR=rvim sudo systemctl edit service
I just tried the above line with nano (I use rvim) and it works
>>
>>62162059

SYSTEMD_EDITOR=vim sudo systemctl edit man-db.timer
opens Nano to edit the file.

Using
sudo -E systemctl edit man-db.timer
seems to respect my variables and everything works. However I'm concerned about the inherited variables causing errors. Is this a valid concern?

Slightly related, but I just realized that "sudoedit" is symlinked to sudo. I guess "sudoedit" is basicall sudo -e, right?
>>
>>62162017
might be a dirty solution but you could just rename nano and symlink it to vim. Of course then you have to watch out for updates, so you have to make it immutable

Yes, sudoedit is basically sudo with -e implied.

If that wasnt the case, why are there so many third party repo's compared to archlinux?

Doesn't Arch literally live from third party repos (AUR)?

w-woah... so this is the power of arch
>>
>>62166573
Arch has most common software in the normal repositories. For more obscure things, or Git/nightly type builds, the AUR has them - and for those, using the AUR is way better than shitty PPAs.

Using official packages is way better than the shitty AUR.

OH NO ALL 1KB WORTH OF MODULES ENABLED
OH NO

Arch works out of the box for 99% of hardware vs what debian or even fedora supports
>>
>>62166409
it's a rolling release distro where you're expected to manually install it, I'm not sure what you're expecting from it but after you've got everything setup and installed it's comparable to 99% of netinst distros minus the need to update to a new release as, naturally, you're on a rolling release

the biggest selling point of arch is the aur, other distros have something comparable(*) but at this point if you have a package you want to install there's probably someone that's packaged it for aur whereas other distros are playing catchup in that regard, it's like the arch wiki, it's a great wiki for everything linux orientated and other wikis generally are playing catchup, that's not to say you should use arch as some things will bite you in the arse but just be aware of the way other distros handle these things too
(*) gentoo pkgbuilds, fedora copr, ubuntu ppa, slackware... well slackware .tar.gz, opensuse has a neat buildsystem that provides packages for every distro, docker as distro agnostic arguably, etc

So tell me, for example, why Arch is literally the only distro which breaks PEP by linking python to python3?
>>
>>62166678
>Arch works out of the box for 99% of hardware vs what debian or even fedora supports
fedora uses the vanilla kernel with some rhel patches so if it works on arch it'll work on fedora with the same kernel version, the reason debian doesn't support any hardware however is because it's the only major distro to use linux-libre, if you're going to meme do it right
>>

I don't think you know how modules work. Retard.

Just cancel your internet connection already, because it's obviously too late for your mommy to abort you.

python3 is the latest version of python. Arch is a rolling release distro. It uses the latest software.
If python didnt want python3 to be used, they would have never have created a python3.

Arch uses the latest software

People have explained it to you countless times. Everything works. Except for your excuse for a brain.

i'd say thats a flaw, the aur fixes no existend packages in the official repos
it makes "installing stuff from literally who" a normal thing

i read the arch wiki myself, but don't use arch and I think many people do the same
theres no reason to install a distro because the wiki is cool

FYI python2 programs work different than pytho3 programs; they aren't compatible. Do you even program.

Update your shitty programs to support python3.
Thats how software works, new versions come out and you update accordingly

It's OK and works a lot better than whatever crappy shellscript system people used before. I honestly think Linux needed something like it. The only ones mad are the "POSIX" people who don't like it when someone deviates from their old ass standards that nobody actually gives a fuck about. Some of the maintainers employed by Red Hat can be pretty idiotic at times though. They caused hardship for the kernel people and got roasted on mailing lists, it was hilarious.

The entire systemd drama is a thing because nobody I've ever talked to actually knows what an "init" system even is or what a "PID 1 program" is even supposed to do or not do. I don't know either. To this day I still haven't been able to find any documentation or manual page that explains what the Linux kernel actually expects from PID 1. The init manual page just tells me what systemd does, not what Linux expects from an init system. If anyone knows and can provide the links... I'd love to educate myself more.

Sure, and Arch has official packages just like other distros do. Except Arch's packages are up-to-date and other distros' packages are not. Using something like Ubuntu, you absolutely will be forced to use random PPAs to install software.

>>62166913
No, literally just Linux. I don't really care much for the GNU userspace. Most of my programs talk directly to the kernel and have zero dependencies on GNU.

>>62166893
I don't have 45 minutes. Seeking to random points, I saw "init freedom" and "programs shouldn't depend on init" slides. Is this another "systemd shouldn't absorb stuff" video? Because I honestly couldn't care less if it absorbed sudo or even bash. Unless Linux itself somehow becomes dependent on systemd I literally don't care how much userspace it consumes.

>>62166885
Yeah those Red Hat developers can be pretty idiotic but they still made something that improved the shitty POSIX system we had. I actually enjoy not having to write turing complete init shell scripts for everything and do manual dependency resolution on those scripts

Very new to linux and I just dual booted kubuntu 17.04 and windows 7 and I'm finding my kubuntu install is basically not working for wifi that works on my windows 7 install.

I can connect to my wifi but it barely loads pages beyond slowly and is always going in and out of being connected and randomly disconnecting. When I immediately start my laptop I get fast internet for all of 15 seconds before it cuts out again and forces me basically to manually disconnect and reconnect to the wifi for each time I want to load a page.

Any help?
