"When we call software “free,” we mean that it respects the users' essential freedoms: the freedom to run it, to study and change it, and to redistribute copies with or without changes. This is a matter of freedom, not price, so think of “free speech,” not “free beer.”

How fucking retarded, who in their right mind, without moralistic duty, would pay for something that's essentially free to use?

Well if you ask a systemd fan the init system is apparently supposed to init your daemons, start and manage your network connections and DNS, manage logins and interactive authentication, dbus, handle logging, allow you to adjust your screen brightness, host services merely to regurgitate the content of simple text files, allow itself to be remotely controlled, be a task scheduler, enable factory resets, handle cleaning up of temporary files, act as its own terminal emulator, power management, run X specific code, and run actual OS images imported over the network

Of course that's just off the top of my head anon, there are many many more things an init system is supposed to do according to systemd! Just ask a systemd fanboy yourself for more info

Not-so-quick rundown (sysvinit):
In the last step of the Linux boot sequence, the kernel starts the designated init program (per default /sbin/init, temporarily overridden by "init=..." cmdline). init looks into /etc/inittab for instructions. It mounts file systems, spawns ttys and runs init scripts, usually printing what it does to /dev/console, which will most of the time be replaced by /dev/tty1. After the boot sequence is complete and the current runlevel is up, init is pretty much just idle, waiting for instructions from telinit or other signals. init runs as PID 1, which means it is the direct or indirect parent of all other processes. If init exits without initiating a reboot or shutdown, it causes a kernel panic (this is one of the things critiziced in systemd, as it's a huge program, which crashes much easier than a process doing nothing but waiting for a few signals).

Additionally, have a copypasta of my local manpage of init: https://pastebin.com/VVh5m6VB (somehow every other init man page is systemd, runit or upstart. Mine is sysvinit although i use OpenRC).

Hey, I decided to reclaim my freedom and move away from spyware OS as far as possible, which means keeping a dualboot for games because it's impossible to go without Windows. But I know nothing about the GNU/Linux filesystem.

Here's my current partitioning:

C + D are a 64GB SSD, I plan to evenly split it in 2x30GB, one for Windows and the other for Linux.
E, F + G are 1TB WD Black. I plan to keep E for Windows, and mount G to /home/ because that's where all my personal shit is. F is unsorted/temp stuff.
X is 4TB WD Red full of sorted stuff (media, install files, backups, etc.)

How would you rearrange the partitions and why? How should I mount them?
Do I need a swap partition with 8GB RAM? If yes, should I put it on the HDD over the SSD (I've read swap causes heavy wear on SSD)?

I intend to turn everything that isn't Windows and Games into ext4 so Windows can't phone my stuff to Microsoft. Is there a way to do it without formatting? As you see my 4TB is practically full, I've got no external or second machine where I could temporarily store this stuff.
>>
>>62169825
I suggest you to install Linux first and try it for some time. Some people just CANT adapt, or have some annoying problems.
>>
How do i check what GPU drivers are currently installed for my system? Im on Ubuntu.
>>
>>62169871
I've been running Linux in a VM for some days now to test it out and prepare me for the switch.

I just have no idea how I should set my partitions. I can set up everything else later, but that's the one thing you have to do beforehand.
>>
>>62169825
D = /
G = /home
F and X sound like they can just be thrown in /mnt as just random assorted files. Or if you want it to feel closer to $HOME you can always mount it somewhere inside /home

You don't need a swap. The only thing you would really need to format if you did it this way is D for the root partition. But, if you can afford to format the other partitions too it's recommended so you don't have to worry about fragmentation anymore.

Cool thing I did in the terminal recently:

Find a YouTube playlist of an album. Download audio versions of the album. Isolate the audio if the format was webm but the audio stream was opus/vorbis.

That was something like
$ youtube-dl "url to playlist, in quotes"
-f 'bestaudio[acodec=opus]/bestaudio[acodec=vorbis]' -o '%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s

to download them all. These were webms, usually.

Then isolate with ffmpeg:
$ for i in *.webm; do ffmpeg -i "$i" -vn -acodec copy "${i%.webm}".ogg;
done

And then, since this might mix some opus and vorbis files, I'd just rename as needed, knowing which are which by using
$ file *

If they were vorbis, leave them be; if they were opus, rename to .opus.

There's probably a better way to do many of these things, but it was a fun thing to learn on my own.

apt-get autoremove --purge <package>
or
apt-get purge --autoremove <package>
is the shortest form.

You can run apt-get autoremove without options, it does the same as when you specify a package; it searches for orphaned packages and removes them, when a package is specified, it first removes that package and then searches for orphaned packages. --purge also removes configurations (not the configs in your home!).

So init mounts file systems, spawns virtual terminals... Is this historic behavior specific to sysv or is this what Linux says init has to do? Because the only hard requirement from Linux implied by your post is "it cannot exit" since you said the kernel will panic if it does.

What stops me from passing init=/usr/bin/bash to the kernel command line? If not exiting is the only requirement, sounds like bash is just as good as systemd as far as the kernel is concerned.

>And it works?
Yes. But you'll need good Linux skills to get a full working desktop from there.

By the way do not forget that process 1 must do wait to wait for orphans children, so from bash, spawn another bash (openvt -s bash) and exec a minimal init that loop to wait (exec simpleloopinit)
>>
>>62172955
How did you fuck a Debian install? it almost literally takes you by the hand and walks you through the whole process.
>>
>>62173658
I don't know.
It kept saying that wireless drivers were missing and just aborted the whole instalation.
I guess this is because I used a small 700mb~ image instead of the full 1.4gb or so one. But back in that moment I just stopped trying and installed ubuntu instead.
>>
>>62173544
Yeah I guess I'd have to execute all the daemons, mount all file systems and basically so everything systemd does from the command line.

So Linux also requires that pid 1 waits on children? OK. I just don't know why they haven't just written this anywhere, to the point we have to work from the ground up to figure out what's essential and what'a not. Also, Linux has process control system call options that allow you to set which process will reap its children, which probably complicates that notion a little.

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/149319/new-parent-process-when-the-parent-process-dies/177361#177361

prctl(PR_SET_CHILD_SUBREAPER, pid, reaper)

That makes PID 1 init about as special as a default "when all else fails" fallback when it comes to "reaping children". I find it ironic that it was the systemd developers who made it posssible to factor this functionality out of pid 1.
>>
>>62173691
I guess ubuntu is fine and all, I just don't like canonical. I'm running Debian testing myself, I don't generally recommend my own distro to newbies, but you seem to me like a fine user, having installed arch before and all, Debian is entry level compared to that.
On a better note you also seem like you're still distro hopping for the moment, come back to Debian when you want to settle, it just becomes invisible and get out of the way between you and your work(or whatever you're using your computer for).
>>
>>62173859
Yeah you could say I still am distro hopping.
Went from Manjaro to Arch using Architect to Manjaro to Arch using a guide to Architect again to Manjaro to Ubuntu.
I do understand the basics of Arch but there's still some stuff about pacman and its behavior I don't completely understand so I am not an advanced user at all.
I just need a pretty, stable and fast distro for programming courses on college, but like I said, I just feel something weird on Ubuntu...

>>62173930
Ok, so when the novelty of linux wears off, and you want to just have a solid OS for every day use, then Debian testing should take care of all your needs, and if you don't do anything that requires commercial only software, I am thinking cad and video editing packages, you can hit the repos and enjoy the largest (to my knowledge) software database in one place in the world, bonus points if you're doing a course computer related, those actually require you to use the *nix tool chains, then you'd be in luck.

Does someone know if the font renderer on GNU/Linux doesn't handle line height properly?

I keep trying out new fonts and everything has such horrendously massive line spacing. I feel like I'm an old person trying to use my fucking Jitterbug or something, it's ridiculous

Take NotoSansCJK fonts for example. Does it render with such a huge spacing between lines on Windows too? I almost find it hard to believe that it's actually supposed to be like this.

I looked up some stuff about fonts and tried opening it up in fontforge and it has an "ascent" of 800 which seems to be just above the top of most characters, while the full "em size" is 1000
According to what I've read it's supposed to use the ascent for spacing which is dynamically adjusted if any characters are larger, while the 1000 is supposed to be the maximum.
But no matter where I use these fonts in GNU/Linux it always looks like it's automatically using the maximum spacing. It's especially ugly when using as the font for window titles because it makes the title bars so unnecessarily huge, it's like half empty space.

It's a bug right?

there's a windows 10 IOT image that supports rpi, perhaps he means to boot the rpi using this?
>>
>>62181961
Might be that, but then what should I do?
I'm not even using Win10 as main OS on my laptop.
>>
>>62181975
download the image, dd it onto the sd card and try to boot using it
>>
>>62181990
I did download the image.
I did dd it to the sd card.
It doesnt boot.
>>
>>62181975
Unpack the IMG and post contents. Maybe it doesn't even have boot files and you're doing it all wrong
>>
>>62182002
Did you set the boot flag?
>>
>>62182002
poo in it
or use noobs
>>
>>62182018
It does have boot files, it booted on my GF's windows PC
>>
>>62182025
How do I set the boot flag?
>>
>>62182037
fdisk
cfdisk
>>
>>62182044
Alright, so I've used fdisk -l before.
Is it another option I need to use to set boot flag?
>>
>>62182059
use cfdisk then
>>
>>62182065
Just straight-up cfdisk? No extra -x -y or something?
>>
i just installed linux what now
>>
>>62182059
the boot flag will already be set by the image...it's been made to just be written to the disc and ran.
are you 100% sure you wrote the image properly? one mistake i used to make was doing dd if=file.iso of=/dev/sdb1, which didn't write properly. what command did you use to write the disc?
>>
>>62182078
no
>>
Zero W is a monumental piece of shit desu just drop out senpai
>>
>>62182079
Open the terminal :)
>>62182084
I did
dd if=1.img of=/dev/mkxc0

Honestly cant remember the part after /dev/ but it was something like that.
>>
>>62182110
>mkxc0

Wat
>>
>>62182109
I wanted the Rpi 3. But our lector was like "that might bring problems *farty fart sounds*"
>>
>>62182110
that's not too informative dude lol
what im trying to say is: make you sure write the image to the disc, not a partition. such as:
dd if=image.iso of=/dev/sdb1 - this is _not_ right,
dd if=image.iso of=/dev/sdb - this is right
i.e sdb not sdb1

sd cards use different IDs compared to hard disks
>>
>>62182125
The name of the SD was something like that.
Its not an exact representation desu.
Just something like it, it started with m, that much I know
>>
>>62182139
>sd cards use different IDs compared to hard disks
Uh, no they dont, i deal with sd cards all day and they are all /dev/sdX identifiers

What fucked up system are you using, holy shit
>>
>>62182139
Oh shit. Thanks man I wrote it to partition 0 I think.
That might be where the problems at. Its just weird that it worked booted on windows.
>>
>>62182155
when i put my SD card in i get /dev/mmcblk0
:)
>>
>>62182158
Seriously just use noobs
>>
>>62182155
What fucked up system are you using?
Anon2 here, mine also uses different labels for SD cards?
I think it depends on the distro desu.
>>
>>62182181
sdX for me as well.
I use Arch btw
>>
>>62182179
I will give his possibility one last try, then I'll try noobs.
>>
>>62169954
I have one for root with about 120 GiB.
One for /home with 80 GiB
And a last one for raw data, like music videos etc, mounted to /home/data

The data partition is a leftover from when I dual booted windows. It could be accessed by Linux and Windows and therefore is a NTFS partition.

Having different partitions for home and your data is also useful for backups. You could use your home partition for different distros on the same computer and just change the root partition.

cause copy/paste, although process substitution comes in handy in a lot of situations, so it is good to know.
>>

I can see CentOS if you're practicing for the red hat exam or something. For actual daily use? Uhh...
>>
>>62180495
Well I just use the i3wm for tiling windows. Everything else is xfce still.
>>
>>62182079
Install the rest of the operating system.
