Why does this software not get more praise than it does?

I've been using it since GM5, and it is amazing how simple this makes it to create games.

One source file can export to Android, iOS, HTML5, Ubuntu, Tizen (lol), MacOS, Windows, UWP, and others.

If you are making a 2d game (or limited 3d) why would you bother with anything, but this?

Using GameMaker to develop a game is like using KidPix to paint the Mona Lisa.

True, but is there really anything that cannot be done on it?

Making a game that doesn't run like complete trash for one.

Making a game where the logic isn't directly tied to the graphics.

Making a 3D game.

The YoYo compiler improved the speed by a lot. even on my phone I haven't done anything that has not been able to run at a solid 60FPS

And I believe some people have managed to seperate the two. Either way it's mainly for games that are easy to run, so I don't see the point for it.

And you can do simplistic 3d, enough for most phone games.

Yeah, if all you care about is phone games, I suppose GM is at least preferable to that Java nightmare.

It's not good when dealing with high-res 2D(hand painted textures with complex shaders).

A native 3D engine allows you to setup complex scenary(perspective camera, 3D rendered BG/elements, psuedo-3D effects,etc).

Unity is better in all regards.
Unity's API uses a real language, so even if you don't want to make games anymore, the experience in developing with C# can easily transfer into software development.
Unity also uses a real IDE now(Visual Studio), which is the industry standard for programming.

Unity has licensing fees and costs a lot more.

GMS with several modules (including Android) has been on humblebundle many times with no licensing fees.

One time fee of $1,500, if your game totals $100,000 in sales. I'd give them 10k considering how good their engine is. Quality costs.

>GMS with several modules
Unity exports to every platform and many games are on Steam, including ones from AAA companies.
